Conversion of Units

1. Answer the following questions. Write your answer on the space

provided.

The following are units used to express heat or energy. Define or explain
each of the following units

The amount of heat that raises 1 gram of pure water to a

a. Calorie temperature of 1 degree Celsius. To distinguish it from the
great calorie, or kilocalorie, this unit is sometimes called the
small or gram calorie.

b. BTU The amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature by 1

lb of water 1° F, known as the British thermal unit.

c. ft-lb When a force of 1 pound acts on a body and causes a body

to move by 1 foot, the energy unit is defined as the work
done. The foot-pound has been replaced by the Joule for
most scientific work. A foot-pound is equal to 1,356 joules.

d. kilowatt-hr A commercial unit of electrical energy equivalent to a power

consumption of 1000 watts for 1 hr.
Named after James Joule Prescott. If a 1 Newton force acts
e. Joule on a body and causes a body to move by 1 meter, the SI
energy unit is used to measure the job done.

II. Give the conversion factors for each of the units mentioned in
exercises I. write your answer on the table provided

1 calorie = 3.966x10-3BTU 1 Joule = 0.239 calorie

3.08596 ft-lb 0.7376 ft-lb
1.1622x10-6 kilowatt-hr 2.778x10-7 kilowatt-hr
4.184 Joule 9.484x10-4 BTU

1 ft-lb = 0.324 calorie 1kilowatt-hr = 8.60421x105 calorie

1.285x10-3 BTU 2.655x106 ft-lb
3.7662x10-7 kilowatt-hr 3
3.41214x10 BTU
1.3558 Joule 3.6x106 Joule

1 BTU = 252 calorie

778 ft-lb
2.93x10-4 kilowatt-hr
1055 Joule
III. Using the conversion factor in exercises II Answer the following
questions. Show your solution on the space provided.

1. What is the Solution:

equivalent of Divide the Joule value by 4.184
28 Joules to J/4.184=cal
calorie? 28J/4.148 =6.69 216cal

Answer:6.69 216 cal

2. What is the Solution:

equivalent of Multiply the BTU value by 1055
320 BTU to BTU x 1055 =J
Joule? 320 x 1055 =3.376 x105J

Answer: 3.376 x105J

3. Change a. BTU
235 Joules
to: Solution:
Divide the Joules value by 1055
J /1055 = BTU
235/1055=0.22737BTU

Answer: 0.22737BTU

b. calories

Solution:
Divide the Joules value by 4.184
J /4.184 = cal
235/4.184=56.166 cal

Answer: 56.166 cal

c. kilowatt-hr

Solution:
Divide the Joules value by 3.6X10 6
J /3.6X106 = kilowatt-hr
235/3.6X106 =6.53x10-5 kilowatt-hr

Answer:6.53x10-5 kilowatt-hr

d. kilocalorie

Solution:
Divide the Joules value by 4184
J /4184 = kcal
235/4184=5.62x10-2 kcal

Answer:5.62x10-2 kcal

4. Change 350 a. BTU

calories to:
Solution:
Divide the calories value by 252
cal/252 = BTU
350/252=1.388 BTU

Answer:1.388BTU

b. Joule
Solution:
Multiply the calories value by 4.184
cal x 4.184 = cal
350 x 4.184= 1464.4 cal

Answer:1464.4 cal
c. kilowatt-hr

Solution:
Divide the calories value by 860421
cal /860421= kilowatt-hr
350/860421=4.0678x10 - 4 kilowatt-hr

Answer:4.0678x10 - 4 kilowatt-hr

d. ft-lb

Solution:
Multiply the calories value by 3.086
cal x 3.086 = ft lb
350 x 3.086 =1080.09 ft-lb

Answer:1080.09 ft-lb

5. Change 523 ft- a. BTU

lb to:
Solution:
Divide the ft-lb value by 778
ft-lb /778 = BTU
523 /778=0.6720 BTU

Answer:0.6720 BTU

b. calorie

Solution:
Divide the ft-lb value by 3.086
ft-lb x 3.086 = cal
523 x 3.086 =169.477 cal
Answer:169.477 cal
c. kilowatt-hr

Solution:
Divide the ft-lb value by 2.655x10 6
