Activity No. 2
Calorimetry

Intended Learning Outcomes: Students will demonstrate their ability to compare the heat lost and the heat gained by
the given substance.

Apparatus/Materials: 2 styro cups with cover (you can use rectangular piece of Styrofoam as cover), thermometer, hot
water, cold water.

Procedure: 1. Prepare 2 styro cups and its cover.

2. Prepare boiling water approximately at a temperature of 1000C.
3. Prepare cold water approximately at a temperature of 10 0C. Put it in a styro cup and cover.
4. 0n the other styro cup, pierce a small hole on the styro cup cover and slowly slid the thermometer on the
hole. See to it that the hole is as big as the diameter of the thermometer and the thermometer will not
dropped.
5. Carefully fill the styro cup with hot water about half full and quickly cover it and record the initial
temperature.
6. Carefully add cold water to the cup containing hot water until it is 2/3 full. Move the thermometer to mix
the mixture and record the temperature. Observe the temperature as you mix the water.
7. Carefully add more cold water until it is about to full. And observe the change in temperature.
8. After performing the activity answer the following questions.

Observation:
1. What is the initial temperature of the hot water?
90C
2. What is the initial temperature of cold water?
16C
3. What have you observed after you pour cold water to the cup containing hot water?
The hot water mixes in the cold water. The hot water on the bottom of the cup rises up and mixes on
the cold water on cold water.
4. What is the temperature of the mixture?
55C
5. What substance gain heat?
The cold water gain heat from the hot water.
6. What substance losses heat?
The hot water losses heat because the cold water gained its heat.
7. How do you compare the heat lost and the heat gained?
The heat lost is the heat that a substance given off or the energy heat that transferred to
other substance. On the other hand, the heat gained is the heat that has been gained from the
substance that been given off by other substance.
