Organization Behavior

Discussion Assignment Unit 2

In the study of human behaviors, values refer to the collective conception or beliefs that people

in an organization consider as good, proper, desirable, or undesirable (Han et al., 2017). Values

are shared by members of an organization, examples of the main values used in organizations

include integrity, innovation, privacy, and fairness. Values are formed as a result of the actions

and decisions of leaders in an organization. Values influence attitude towards work and others in

many ways. Good values lead to a positive attitude of a worker in an organization. For example,

in an organization where good values like creativity and respect are embraced, the employees

tend to be more motivated and this makes them have a positive attitude toward work and others.

According to McShane & Glinow (2017), bad values in an organization demotivates employees

and thus lowers performance due to a negative attitude towards work and others.

Many factors form the perception that individuals have about their place of work. According to

Borkowski & Meese (2020), in organizational behavior, perception is how employees interpret

something that they hear or see in their mind and how later they use it to judge a situation or an

individual. Based on the perspective of the employees, perception is what they view as their

reality and is contingent on the employee’s personality and how they perceive their work, the

work environment, and even their leaders.

Organizational success is greatly affected by negative behaviors in the workplace. According to

McShane & Glinow (2017), negative behavior is described as an unacceptable behavior of

individuals at the workplace. These unacceptable individual conducts include bad language while

communicating, misleading subordinates, absenteeism, among others. The success of an

organization is affected in various ways when an individual behaves negatively. When

employees behave negatively, they are unwilling to work collaboratively and to try new things,

and there are poor customer service and engagement, poor quality, and reduced productivity

(Lisak et al., 2016). As a result, negative behaviors affect the performance of an individual and

the overall organizational performance, thereby inhibiting the success of a firm.

Leaders in an organization can foster a positive work environment in several ways. Leaders

should demonstrate empathy by relating to the thoughts, experiences, or emotions of others

(Borkowski & Meese, 2020). To be an effective leader and to enhance a conducive work

environment, transformational leaders should demonstrate their concerns about the needs and

achievements of their subordinates by listening to them. Leaders can show gratitude by

appreciating and recognizing the efforts of the employees in a team. Employees work hard when

their contributions to an organization are recognized. Additionally, leaders should reinforce

purpose, especially with millennials who want more from their jobs than just a paycheck. A

positive and purpose-driven workplace benefits both the individual and the organization in

general.
