ZUTARA WEEK 2021

Greetings, AireensColor,

Well, I’m planning on submitting this artwork during Zutara Week, 2021 (August 8 – August 14). There are six
‘themes’ or ‘prompts’ which must be included in the artwork, according to the website. These are:

• Hair
• Disguise
• Glowing
• Mend
• Spirits
• Stories

I’ve colour-coded these themes, so you can read in the description how our ideas include all these six themes in a
single artwork:

A. CHARACTERS:
a. Ancient Era
i. Blue Spirit (ancient spirit)
ii. Painted Lady (ancient spirit)
b. Medieval Era
i. Prince Zuko (medieval era)
ii. Katara (medieval era)
c. Modern Era
i. Zuko (modern day)
ii. Katara (modern day)

B. LAYOUT:
These are only rough examples. You can choose whichever layout would work best.
C. DESCRIPTIONS:

1. ANCIENT ERA
A. Painted Lady:
She is a Spirit. So you can draw a heavenly, ethereal glow around her. The colour of the glow can be
a bright golden?

B. Blue Spirit:
He is also a Spirit. So you can draw a similar heavenly, ethereal glow around him. Just make the
glow a different colour, maybe whitish-blue?
He is the Herald of the Dragons, so you can make his outfit less “human clothes” and more “stealth
armour” (like a dragon’s scales). I’ve included reference images. But, please be sure to keep the
colour scheme same as the original picture.

C. Background:

2. MEDIEVAL ERA
A. Zuko & Katara
This is where Eastonia & I decided to incorporate the Hair theme. Can you draw a scene with these
two where Katar is trimming Zuko’s very long hair? Their outfits will be in the reference images.

B. Background:

You can use a similar background as the reference images, or use similar green and brown or any
colours to make a background that says “medieval ages”.

3. MODERN ERA
A. Zuko & Katara
Modern day Zuko & Katara. No official versions exist. So you are free to modernize them any way
you like best! Make Zuko’s hair neater, and dress both Zuko & Katara in modern day clothes. I think
they will be half-body drawings? They can both be reading a big old book in the background of a
library. This will be the Stories theme.

B. Background:

Remember that picture you drew of the Neverending Story – not the one I commissioned – but the
one you drew yourself years ago? That scene at the bottom where Bastian was reading the book? You
can make something like that. I will attach that particular portion of the artwork in the reference
images.

For the Disguise & Mend themes, I will send you separate screenshots from the show on Discord – so
please see if you can include them in the picture. If it works, please see if you can fit it in the middle
portion (near the picture you will draw of Katara trimming Zuko’s hair) – as these are from the
Medieval period.
REFERENCE IMAGES

1. PAINTED LADY

2. BLUE SPIRIT
This picture of Chinese stealth armour is
just for reference.

Keep 50% of the Blue Spirit exactly as he

looks in the picture above,

But the rest 50%? Include elements from

this stealth armor into Blue Spirit’s
costume.

The color schemes should be exactly the

same as the Blue Spirit’s original costume

3. BACKGROUND FOR ANCIENT ERA

The two fishes are the symbol of
the Painted Lady; while the two
dragons ate the symbol of the
Blue Spirit.

You don’t have to draw all of

these. The red dragon around
the Blue Spirit and one of those
fishes around the Painted lady.
Will that look good?

Your choice to do what looks

best!

Here is a detailed
look at the face of
the red dragon.

Also, can you draw

a full moon above
the Painted Lady
and a new moon
above the Blue
Spirit?
4. ZUKO (Medieval Era)
Medieval Era Zuko

• Draw him exactly like this. But have the

towel wrapped around his shoulders,
while he is getting his hair trimmed?
• You can also use a similar background as
given in this image.
• Or maybe just a background of abstract
colors and nothing definite? Whatever
you think would look best.
• Notice the scar on his eye? Don’t miss
that out! Here’s a clean image of his
scar.

Medieval Zuko with scar

Modern Day Zuko

• He has no scar; his face is clean.

• Make his hair slightly shorter, and
tidier. Not so messy.
• Dress him in blue, purple and green
colours. Modern day clothes. Like a
shirt, jacket or sweater, watch, a tie
etc.
Modern-day Zuko with NO scar
• He’ll probably be drawn half-body, so
5. KATARA (Medieval Era) you don’t need to worry about his
trousers.
These pictures above are for Medieval-Era Katara. Draw her exactlylike this.

Now, the picture below is a reference for how you can style Katara’s hair for Modern-Day version.

Ignore her old-style clothes. Give her modern-day clothes.

But make her clothes shades of red, orange, yellow or maroon.

The hairstyle is only a reference. You can change it to make it more modern, if
you like.

You can also give her modern-day accessories if you like – such as a locket or
something like that.

6. Reference image for Katara trimming Zuko’s hair:

Also, Katara will use Katara’s scissors

scissors.

And Zuko’s facial

expression wouldn’t be so
smiley and happy. His
expression will be neutral.

Katara’s expression would

be a calm, sweet smile.

7. Reference for library and reading book

And finally, would it be possible to use this font to write this on top of the artwork. The title would be:

Origins & cycles

Or I can do it myself later on, if you keep some space in the top center?
