Menu pulldowns and button press actions are indicated by the bold dark turquoise text.
Additional information notes and references to other documentation will be indicated in the styles below.
Additional information
System prompts should be bold and italic in inverted commas i.e. 'Choose function'.
Example files or inputs will be in the courier new font, colours and styles used as before.
Where users are directed to invoke specific functions, the instruction will usually follow the format:
TAB > Group > Button or TAB > Group > Button > Options List selection.
The AVEVA Bocad Steel™ (3.2) Modelling guide will introduce the methods available for:
The Piperack and Explore job will be used throughout this training course for all worked examples and
exercises. By the end of this training course, the user will have created the Piperack model using the various
tools available, with correct phases and with bolted and welded connections.
This chapter explains the creation of different types of profiles used in modelling.
Generally, profile members are modelled by selecting the profile size from a catalogue, with the user simply
defining the position and justification of the profile in the model.
Other methods of creating profiles are available, such as using macros. This guide will cover the basic
principles of profile creation.
The specification of the available profiles is defined in the Bocad catalogue. For information on how to
create additional profile shape specifications refer to TM-8050 AVEVA Bocad™ (3.2) Administration
training guide.
On the Home tab, in the Create group, clicking the Profile button and right-clicking displays the Create
Standard Profile form
There are three types of profiles that can be created using the Create Standard profile form. Clicking the
relevant button on the bottom of the form will change the form style to suit the selected option.
- Standard Profile
- Special Profile
Irrespective of the type of profile being used, many of the options available in the Create Standard Profile
form are the same.
On the Member data tab, the user can configure or change the member data of the
selected profile type. The member data includes the designation, profile, material, the
displayed view of member and position of how the member will be created.
On the Additional settings tab, the user can define further information about the
member, such as rounding, family, and comments.
Save: When the Create Standard Profile form parameters have been configured to
suit a specific requirement, the form settings can be saved to allow this configuration
to be reused in future sessions. Users can name this form configuration, and the file
is saved in the Bocad\project\boc3db directory.
Load: The Load button will display a list of saved Create Standard Profile form
configurations. Selecting a configuration from the options list then clicking OK will
update the form to the saved configuration.
Delete: This button will display a list of saved Create Standard Profile form
configurations. To delete a configuration, select it from the displayed options list and
click OK.
Load from member- This button allows the Create Standard Profile form to be
configured to suit the settings of an existing profile element. Clicking the Load from
member button prompts the user to ‘Pick member’. Picking a member in the view
and pressing the Enter key will configure the form to suit the picked member’s
settings.
Preview: Clicking the Preview button will toggle the Preview window on and off. The
form can be displayed without the preview if desired. However, it is good practice to
have the preview window displayed as it gives details on how a profile will look when
added to the View.
The Preview window gives a visual feedback on how the changes made to the Create Standard Profile form
settings which will affect how a profile will be configured when created in the View.
The Preview window has the following symbols and annotations which reflect how the profile will look in the
view.
The eye symbol indicates the view direction on the plane the profile is
being created.
The axis symbol indicates the reference plane the profile is being
created on.
Point 2 indicates the ending point for the member creation if the
Creation type selected requires a second point pick.
The Preview window has the following options at the bottom of the window which allow the user to adjust
the Preview as required.
Level view/Side view/Wall view: this options list allow the user to change the view direction
of the member shown in the Preview window, either looking down the length of the profile or
the choice of two 3D view directions.
Shade: Checking this checkbox allows the user to activate the shading in the preview.
Designate: Checking this checkbox allows the user to annotate the preview with the profile
designation used.
Centre: If this checkbox is checked, the preview is centrally positioned on the preview
window.
Use global member colour: If this checkbox is checked, global member colour settings
will be activated on the preview window.
The Initial Mark Number text box is used to prepare members for marking. Two distinct number ranges
are used in this text box; 0 and 1
• 0 -If the user enters 0, the profiles are created with the Initial Mark Number set to 0. Members with a
0 Initial Mark Number will be considered as dummy members and will not appear in fabrication
documents. As an example, this can be used with the existing components.
Initial marks can also be set with a prefix, for example, C1 for Columns, B2 for beams etc.
Piece marks for standard members can be input with a ‘_’ in front of the prefix, for example, _SC001 for
standard cleats.
Designation
This textbox allows the user to assign a more accurate description of a member. The designation can be
used to filter or search for members with that designation. The designation is also relevant for marking. For
example, if geometrically identical members are created with different designations (COLUMN, BEAM),
they are given different marking numbers. Designations are also case-sensitive. For example, if a member
is given the designation BEAM and another geometrically identical member is given the designation beam,
then these geometrically identical members will be assigned different marking numbers during marking.
Designations should not contain spaces in the name and is a good practice to use capital letters only.
Profile
In the Profile field, the user can enter the name of an existing
profile, e.g. HEA200.
Material
The Material options list is used to set the material for the member being created. The material can be
chosen from a list of available materials, or a material can be entered directly into the text box. This
information is relevant to marking.
The easiest way to create a profile between two points is to use two existing points, e.g. grid points. It is also
possible to create points positioned away from gridline intersections if the profile does not have the start or
end on a grid point.
To create a profile between 2 points, the user must first open a main view, with a plane parallel to the axis of
the profile to be created. Picking two points in this view will define the start and end points of the profile.
For details on working with views refer to Chapter 3 of TM-8001 AVEVA Bocad Steel™ (3.1) Foundations
training guide.
On the Home tab in the Create group, clicking on the Profile button and then clicking on the Bocad Menu
tile of PowerWheel will open the Create Standard Profile form. Select the Member data tab.
The point selected on the Position – Front view area of the form is reflected in the Preview window. The DZ
direction shown in the Position – Front view diagram is the direction shown by the eye symbol on the Preview
window and DX direction is the line between the start and end points of the profile. The created profile will be
parallel to the plane at which point 1 and 2 are picked.
Profile view: The Profile View options list gives four different view directions which will be used when profiles
are created in the 2D view. The view directions are front view, top view, rear view and bottom view. The
view direction arrow corresponds with the eye symbol in the Preview window and reflects how the profile will
be orientated in the 2D View when created.
The front view is basically defined as the view on the web (in case of standard profiles). In case of plates, the
front view is defined as the view on the surface.
By 1 Point – This option allows the start point to be picked, and the angle
and length of the profile is defined by entering a required length and angle
By Three Points – this option allows the start and end points to be picked, and the
justification of the profile is set by picking a point anywhere on the side the profile is
to be justified to
Via n Points – this option allows a profile to be created by picking multiple points to
define the profile route.
Curved – this option allows a curved profile to be created, by picking the start and end
points of the profile, and defining a radius by entering a value in the form.
Curved by 3 points – this option allows the user to create a curved profile, by picking
the start and end point and then picking a third point which will lie on the curved
member
Example:
Comment
The Comment text box is used to add additional information to a member. This comment can be used in
drawings, BOM and other outputs.
Click Open Job from the menu on the left-hand side of the screen, select Common from Owning Detailing
World options list, select job Piperack from the Job name and click the Open button to open the job.
In this worked example, the profiles which are located on Piperack2_2_ ROW_A of the grid will be created,
as shown below.
The three columns which need to be created on Row A all start and end on a grid point, so no additional points
need to be created at this stage.
Set the current Phase to Columns using the options list at the bottom right
corner on the Status bar. This ensures all the Columns which will be created
are in the correct Phase. The first column to create is located on Axis 1
For details on the creation and use of Phases refer to TM-8001 AVEVA
Bocad Steel™ (3.2) Foundations training guide.
Click Home > Create > Profile button and right-click to display the Create standard profile form, ensure
Standard Profiles is selected
From the Profile View options list select the Front view option.
After entering all the details click OK button. The user is prompted to ‘Pick point 1'. Pick the point at the
intersection of grid lines Axis 1 and Lev.0.0 as shown. The prompt changes to ‘Pick point 2’, pick the point
at the intersection between grid lines Axis 1 and Lev 2750.0 as shown below.
Create the columns on grid lines Piperack2 _2_Axis_2 and Axis 3 as shown below, with the bottom of the
columns located at level 400.
With this setting the web of the column will be parallel to the view and with this setting the
selected points are located at the midpoint of the column.
It is good practice to create the columns from bottom to top, to allow any Macros to work as intended.
Click Home > Points > Add button and right-click to display
the Add points form.
The rafter can now be created, using the newly created point.
For details on the various methods available for creating points, refer to TM-8001 AVEVA Bocad Steel™
(3.2) Foundations training guide.
Click Home > Create > Profile button and right-click to display the Create standard profile form. Ensure
Standard Profiles is selected and complete the form as shown below.
Set the current Phase to COLUMNS. Create the Columns on grid planes Row B, Row C and Row D as
shown below. Use the same settings as used in grid plane Row A. All the columns are HEA200.
Set the current Phase to BEAMS. Open the Create Standard Profile form and set the parameters as shown
below.
Using the same settings, create the beams at Piperack2_2_Axis_2 and Axis_3
Intermediate beams IPE180 are to be added at Level 4880 and Level.7820, exactly halfway between
Piperack2_2_Axis_2 and Axis 3.
Open the Create Standard profile form and enter -1830mm (3660/2) in DY textbox.
Ensure the rest of parameters are set as shown below then click the OK button.
Additional beams IPE200 are to be added at Level 4880 between Piperack2_2_Axis_3 and Axis 4.
Set all the parameters of the additional beams as shown in the image below
Within AVEVA Bocad Steel application, there are many ways in which existing members can be modified to
suit the required design, such as lengthening and shortening, adapting to other members and creating holes
and cut-outs in profiles.
This chapter explains different functionalities by which existing members can be modified. The modifications
include lengthening and shortening, adapting to other members, creating holes and cuts in profiles.
Open Explore Job. On the Training tab, in the Common group, selecting Modify Model option from the
Modelling button displays ‘Pick Generation point’ on the notification area.
Selecting any point in any one of the opened views, populates the required training model.
On the Home tab, in the Modify group, clicking the Length button and right-clicking displays the Length
modification form
The Length button also includes an options list, which can be used to invoke the
required type of command directly. The same form is displayed by right-clicking.
The options available from the Length form are covered in the following sections.
3.2.1 Lengthen/Shorten
The Lengthen /Shorten option allows the user to lengthen or shorten one or multiple members.
• Distance - The value by which the member will stretch (positive value) or shorten (negative
value) is entered in this textbox.
• With stretching – when With stretching checkbox is checked, the user must define the plane from
where the stretching or shortening starts. This has an effect on holes that may be present on the
member, as well as changing the length of the member, as shown below.
• When the With stretching checkbox is unchecked, the user simply picks the end of the member to
apply the entered length.
• Member or Construction group - if this radio button is selected, it defines whether the changes are
to be applied to a single member or to the complete Construction group.
Click Member > Modify > Length button and right click to display Length modification form. Ensure
Lengthen/Shorten from the Type frame of the form is selected.
Pick the Column and press the Enter key. The prompt changes to ‘Stretch plane – pick point 1’. Pick the
point located inside the cut-out as shown.
The prompt changes to ‘Pick end of the member’ pick the top of the column. The column is lengthened
by 500mm, and the cut-out is also lengthened by 500mm.
Undo the lengthen command, and experiment with different stretch plane points, and unchecking the With
stretching check box.
3.3 Adapt
The Adapt option allows a member or members to be modified so the end of the member is adapted to a
plane. When the adapting plane intersects the member being adapted, the part of the profile which is longest
in relation to the adapt plane will always remain.
If the shortest side of the member must be kept, then the Cut option must be used.
• Clearance –The
gap between the
member(s) and the
adapt plane is
entered in this
textbox.
• Adaptation plane
frame – contains
two options for
defining the plane.
• Reference plane - If one or two points are given, the cutting plane will be orthogonal to this reference
plane.
Extent – This frame consists of 2 radio buttons by which the selection can be done member by member
or a construction group.
Click on Home>Modify>Length>Adapt
to open the form.
Pick the rafter and press the Enter key. The prompt changes to ‘Pick plane point 1 from min 2 to max 3’.
Pick the first point as shown.
The prompt changes to ‘Pick plane point 2 from min 2 to max 3’’. Pick the point as shown and then
press the Enter key. The cut plane is calculated through the two points, perpendicular to the view plane
as shown.
Undo the Adapt command, and experiment with different plane points and Clearance values.
Adapt does not work on all types of member. For example, members via n points and curved members
cannot be adapted.
3.4 Cut
• Clearance - This is the gap (or over-length if the Clearance value is negative) between the members
being modified and the member being trimmed to known as the tool part is entered in this text box.
• Adaptation plane – There are three options available for the result of the Adapt command which
depends upon the option chosen from the Adaption plane options list:
• Projection on axis – if this checkbox is unchecked, the member(s) will be cut by a plane orthogonal to
the axis of the tool part member. If the checkbox is checked, the cut plane will be orthogonal to the axis
of the member being adjusted.
• Only if members intersect – if this checkbox is checked, only members which actually intersect with the
tool part member will be adapted. If the checkbox is unchecked, members which do not intersect with the
tool part member will still be adapted, the geometry of the tool part member is effectively projected to the
intersection point.
Click on Home>Modify>Length>Adapt
to a member to open the form.
Pick the column and press the Enter key. The prompt changes to ‘Pick member 1 to be adapted’. Pick the
beam adjacent to the column and press Enter. The beam is adjusted to the column, with a 10mm gap.
The Initial State option allows the user to reset the selected end of a member to how it was before any length
adjustment was carried out. The user must select the member or members, and then individually select the
end of the member to reset to the initial state.
3.7 Split
The Split option allows a member or members to be split to a defined plane, creating two separate members.
2 or 3 points – if selected, the member(s) will be split along a plane defined by 2 or 3 points. If only two
points are given the cutting plane is orthogonal to the reference plane.
Click on Home>Modify>Length>Split to
open the form.
Pick the column and press the Enter key. The prompt changes to ‘Pick point’. Pick the point as shown below.
The Regroup option is used to combine two or more split members into one member.
• The members being regrouped can be the result of a previous Split command or can be separately
created members.
• The members must have the same profile type, same orientation and must be positioned on the same
axis.
• Any Internal or external outlines will remain after the Regroup command.
To regroup a selection of members, click Member > Modify > Regroup button. The user is then prompted
‘Pick member 1’, ‘Pick member 2’ etc. until all the members to be regrouped are picked. Pressing Enter will
regroup all the selected members to a single member.
Volume Modification works by taking the volume of a member, which acts as a coping tool to remove the
portion of a member.
On the Home tab, in the Modify group, clicking the Volume button and right-click displays the
Korperoperation < bearbeiten>Teile form
3.9.1 Punching
The Tool part determines how the tool part geometry is used to define a
punch.
• When the Tool part checkbox is Unchecked, the cross section of the
cutting tool member is used to define the punch. The Tool part area of the
form is not populated.
• When the Tool part checkbox is checked –more options are displayed in
the Tool part area of the form, allowing the user to change the tool part
cross section in accordance with the specified shape. The three radio
buttons Full volume, N-rectangle and Rectangle, defines how the punch
is created:
Full volume - the tool part will be considered as a full member so only the outer shape will be
considered.
• Clearance – The profile cross-sections of the shaping member are increased by the clearance
value. i.e the hole created slightly bigger than the tool part.
• Lengthening – This option is useful when the tool part does not pass through the complete
member being modified. The tool part will be considered as if it were lengthened by the given
value, therefore passing right through the adapted part. In the below example, the pipes have
their start point in the centre of the web of the beam. The left punch is done with a Lengthening
value of 0, and the right punch with a Lengthening value of 50mm.
• To be adapted member frame determines how the members to be modified. There are two
radio buttons, Members and Construction group, which sets the selection to be picked
member by member, or to apply the modification to a full Construction Group.
Open the main view r_0_Axis_1 to show the top of the column on Grid Line C.
Take front view and top view of member using View > Member plane.
Pick the circular hollow section as shown and then press the Enter key. The prompt changes to ‘Pick
member 1 to be adapted’. Pick the column then press the Enter key.
Use the different options on the Korperoperation < bearbeiten>Teile form, use other profiles as tool part
with column, note the difference in punching result as shown.
It is good practice to ensure the tool part is large enough to extend beyond either side of the member
being adapted. If a tool part does not extend beyond the member being adapted, the geometry produced
can be too complex to give a good result.
3.9.4 Merge
The Merge option on the Korperoperation < bearbeiten>Teile form allows the user to merge two or more
members into a single member. This is useful for the creation of mechanical elements, wood and concrete
elements, or some standard steel members.
Centre coordinate system – This checkbox controls the coordinates of the members after merging.
• If this checkbox is checked, the new centre coordinate point is calculated and repositioned for the new
merged member.
• If this checkbox is unchecked, the coordinate of the first picked member will remain as the coordinate
point of the new merged member.
• Determine again – If this option is selected, the user must confirm or modify the created member’s
properties.
• Take over first member – If this option is selected, the created member will inherit the properties of the
first member selected.
Member information - the member information frame gives information of member ident number and member
data.
The two plates are now merged into a single member. It can be seen that there is no contact edge between
the plates.
Care needs to be taken to ensure Members that are going to be merged must be touching each other.
Members having gap between them cannot be merged. If the user try to do so an error message will be
displayed advising the user that the members has to be changed.
On the Home tab, in the Delete group, clicking the Member button and right-click displays the Delete Member
form
On the Member tab, in the Properties group, clicking the Exchange Standard button and right-click displays
the Exchange standard member form
The Exchange Standard Member allows the user to modify the profile specification, justification, orientation
of modelled members.
Other member properties can be changed using the Information > Member option, covered in Chapter 8
of this guide.
The Geometry tab allows the user to apply a different profile specification and justification to existing
members.
The General tab allows changes to the Phase, Material and other settings which do not alter the physical
size, shape or position of a member.
Each field on the form has an adjacent check box. With the check box checked, the setting is applied to the
members selected for the modification.
The Rounding options refer to graphical display resolutions and will not be covered in this guide.
• The Profile, Position and Profile view areas of the form work in the same way as previously described
on the Create Standard profile form.
• Exchange member even if modified - if this check box is checked, it exchanges a profile which has
been modified. For example, if a member is punched, exchange can still be carried out
When unchecked, the exchange cannot be carried out on the members which have modifications like
punch/cut.
Click Member > Properties > Exchange Standard and right click to display the Exchange standard
member form.
Click the Load from member button, the prompt ‘Pick member (load beam)’ will be displayed in the
notification area. Pick the beam IPE200 beam and press the Enter key. The Exchange Standard member
form is updated to reflect all the properties associated with the picked member.
The prompt ‘Pick member 1’ is displayed in the notification area. Pick the horizontal beam, then press the
Enter key. The beam is changed to an IPE300 profile.
On the Member tab, in the Modify group, clicking the Stretch/Shorten button and right-click displays the
Stretch/Shorten form
ns list.
The command can be used to shorten or stretch a
member by a specified distance
• Split Bolt Group Cut by the plane - if this check box is checked, the bolt patterns through which the
processing plane for the Stretch/Shorten process runs, will be split into two bolt patterns. One part of
the original bolt pattern is moved with the elements on the stretch side, and the others remain at the
original position.
If the checkbox is unchecked, the bolt pattern is retained and will be moved in the stretch/shorten
direction in its entirety.
On the Member tab, in the Modify group, click the Detailing Box button and right-click to display the Detailing
Box form
Detailing box is used to create, modify and delete cuts & cope in a material.
Detailing Functions – contains the icons required for the detail functions and are listed in the
1 same order as the editing sequence.
Input value area – The letters in the input area represents different values. The user can also
2 use the mathematical expression instead of direct values.
The user can define the geometry of the cut or cope via value input or by picking points.
• Geometry via value input – The user has to define the values in the input area, by selecting a detailing
function and confirming the values entered in the textbox by clicking OK. If the user pressed the Enter
button, then the geometry of the editing step will get implemented on the member based on the values
entered.
• Geometry by Picking Points – The user has to create the required points to be picked on the member
being edited. By selecting an editing function, confirm the dialog by clicking OK and follow the pick
request.
Detail functions contains the buttons required for the detail functions and are listed in the same order as the
editing sequence. The first three buttons are used for setting up all the views of the member, defining the
member to be edited and for defining the coordinate system for the value input.
Multiple view from member button allows the user to view the member to be edited in a new
window in different views.
If Set as to be handled member button is selected, it closes the form and the prompt Pick member
is displayed on the notification area.
If Set coordinate system button is selected, it closes the form and the prompt Pick point <Return
for values > is displayed on the notification area.
The first picked point defines the origin and the second point
determines the X direction of the coordinate system. The Y direction is
automatically set orthogonal to the X direction.
If Cut member button is selected, it closes the form and the user can cut the members by picking
points, values or by combination of points and values. The input values used for cutting are. W,
H, A, T.
If Cope Member button is selected, it closes the form and the user can edit the members by
picking points or by combination of points and values. The input values used for cutting are. W,
H, T.
If Set inner outlines button is selected, then user can create round, rectangular openings or
rectangular openings with rounding by picking points or by combination of points and values. All the
input values can be used for defining inner outlines.
Delete inner outline button, deletes the inner outlines by picked edge.
Move inner outline button, allows the user to move inner outlines by picked edges, by points or by
values. The input values used are DX and DY.
Move external edge button, allows the user to move external outlines by picked edges, by points
or by values. The input values used are DX and DY.
Pick external outline button, allows the user to pick points freely and the order picking determines
the outline.
Point info X-Y value in box button is selected, then X and Y values of the picked point are copied
into the textbox as input values.
Surrounding – If this checkbox is checked, an imaginary rectangle surrounding the member is used to
determine the member corners.
If the checkbox is unchecked, the current member outline will be used to calculate the member corners.
More – Clicking More button displays the more options for editing the member like resolution, adding number
of rounding points, specifying rounding radius etc.
In this worked example, how to use detail box functions is explained. Open the main view
Piperack2_2_Row_A.

Pick the point as shown in image and press Enter to display the
detailing box form.
In this chapter, methods describing the addition of plates, bolts and welds used for creating connection
between members is explained
In AVEVA Bocad, plates of various shapes can be modelled; however, the system will treat them as a profile.
On the Home tab, in the Create group, clicking the Profile button and right-clicking displays the Create
Standard Profile form.
To create a flat bar, the plate profile has to be designated by width & thickness of the bar– PL200*10. The
length will be determined by the two selected points.
On the Home tab, in the Create group, click the Plate button and right-click to display the Plate form.
To create a plate, the profile has to be designated by the plate thickness – PL10. Then the plate outline will
be determined by the points selected describing the outline (minimum three points).
On Additional settings tab, if Force orientation checkbox is checked, it will display 1st and 2nd point
define X axis checkbox and if this checkbox is checked the first two pick points will define the X axis of the
plate in shop drawings.
For a detailed explanation on shop drawings, refer to TM-8004 AVEVA Bocad™ (3.2) Deliverables
training guide.
When a plate has been modelled, there are several options available to modify the plate outline. The
modification of a plate such as add, move and delete plate outline points or edges and change of plate
thickness can be done. Also, specific tools for changing the outline, such as adding snipes and fillets are
available.
Clicking OK and double clicking on outline plate will create a new view with the selected outline plate.
• Double plate thickness: Selecting this radio button will create the view depth, twice the thickness
of the plate selected.
• Plate thickness: The new view depth will be exactly thickness of the plate selected.
• Free values: The user can manually enter the view depth by selecting this radio button.
For details on Modifying outline plate refer to worked example 4.2.7 Modifying Stiffeners.
The weld preparation (beveling) modifies plate edges to prepare them for the welding process. As compared
to steel industry, in offshore industry the member geometries in terms of contours and beveling are more
complex. This section explains about the creation of different types of beveling.
On the Member tab, in the Modify group, clicking the Weld Preparation button displays the chamfer form.
• Depending on the Bevel type selected, the Chamfer tab displays the options.
The user can define the size and shape of the chamfer by selecting the required options and entering values
in the textbox.
In the Global settings tab,the user can define the chamfer punching, closing and tool parameters settings.
• Punch Defines the Seam and Punch settings for the chamfer. The option list
contains following options.
Seam Only – Displays the cut-out area of the plate for representation
purpose. The chamfer is not created.
Seam and Punch – Displays the cut-out area of the plate for representation
purpose and creates the chamfer.
Punch Only- Creates the chamfer. The cut-out area of the plate is removed.
• Weld Mark It prepares members for marking. There are two distinct number ranges.
>1 – By default, the initial mark number is set as 1 and specifies that the final
position number is greater than 1. For e.g: - Sorting of components using
specific number ranges can be achieved for special components.
Initial Mark No. = 100: for bar and 200: for column
All the bars with the initial mark no. 100 are created with the 100 series mark
numbers after positioning (provided there are less than 100 bars) and all
columns start with a 200-series mark number.
• Thickness Clearance Specifies the clearance distance required between the chamfer thickness
and other elements to consider it as non-obstructive elements.
• Outside Clearance Specifies the clearance distance required between the chamfer outside edge
and other elements to consider it as non-obstructive elements.
• Overlength Start/End Specifies an additional length for the cut-out area of the plate. The additional
length is measured from the chamfer start and chamfer end position points.
• Z mode Specifies the orientation of the Z-axis. The option list contains following
options.
From current plane – The Z-axis orientation is defined from the working
plane.
From picked points – The Z-axis orientation is defined from picked points.
On the Viewport tab, in the Representation group, clicking the Settings button displays the New Display
form.
Clicking the Main member/Secondary member Type button displays the Main Member Settings form.
When creating a connection, it is good practice to have different views open of the members being worked on.
The first step will be to create a Detail View, with three views on the profiles, the connection is to be created.

bolts to a specific standard.
The selected standard bolts will populate in the Catalogues area. User can open groups with associated bolts
(types) via the arrow sign. The Elements area of the form is populated with all the bolts available in the
catalogue
• Additional washer on head side to lock nut - This option ensures that additional washers are
arranged at the top end of bolts that have threads outside the grip range.
• Minimum thread in the grip length This option will make sure there will be a minimum thread
inside of the members to fasten.
• Bolt length as per bolt database grip length- With this option, the real grip length is calculated
first. Then a bolt with the same grip length is selected from the bolts database.
• Only material – If this checkbox is checked, gaps between two members will be ignored. The grip length
is determined by the material of the connection partners only.
• With Bolt shaft research - If this checkbox is checked the shaft around the bolt head diameter
determines the intersections with the member surface.
• Cancel if nut does not fasten with the entered length - If this checkbox is checked, nuts cannot be
created if the bolt length is too short to tighten them.
• Side view – If this checkbox is checked, the bolts can be created in the side view.
• Always 3D Representation - If this checkbox is checked, the bolt is always shown in 3D, irrespective of
other settings in the display parameters or the drawing configuration.
• Member [ident] that gives the phase – If the Current radio button is selected, the connection is
registered in the current phase. If First member radio button is selected, then the connection is registered
in the current phase of the first picked member.
• Connecting level – defines the ID number of the connection for specifying mark number (0 is the default
setting). For working with subassemblies, the user can use two different levels.
For a detailed explanation of other options form bolts tab please refer User manual from help menu.
Click Home > Create > Bolts and right click to display the Create Bolt Anchor Loose form.

Bolted connections may need to be changed, either by specifying a new bolt to be used, or by recalculating
the bolt length to suit modified connecting members.
On the Connection tab, in the Modify group, clicking the Exchange button and right click to display the
Exchange Bolts form
Click Connection > Modify > Exchange and right click to display the Exchange Bolts form.
Select any of the M12 bolt – the length does not matter as the bolt length will be calculated to suit the thickness
of the members being connected.
Click the OK button, then the user is prompted to ‘Pick bolt 1’.
Pick one of the bolts on the bolted connection then press Enter.
When plate thickness of a connection modified or new plates were introduced in a connection, it is possible to
recalculate the length of bolts to suit the new grip length.
On the Connection tab, in the Modify group, clicking the Recalculate button and right click to display the
Recalculate Bolts form
In this worked example, an additional plate has been added inside of the column flange for recalculating bolt
length.
The Holes command allows several different types of holes (Standard, tapered, threaded, slotted and
rectangular) to be added to existing members.
On the Connection tab, in the Create group, clicking the Hole/Thread button and right clicking displays the
Hole Thread Length Rectangle Hole form
The form contains three different functions, which can be selected using the radio buttons at the top of the
form
• The Diameter text box allows the user to enter the hole diameter.
• The Length and Diameter are entered into the text boxes.
Rectangular hole – This option works in the similar as a slotted hole, but the size of the hole is defined
by the Width and Height setting.
The bottom half of the form has the same options irrespective of the type of hole selected:
There are many options available for the creation of welds in AVEVA Bocad. This training guide will only cover
the basic functionality which is required to create assemblies.
On the Connection tab, in the Create group, clicking the Automatic Weld button and right clicking displays
the Automatic Weld form
For a detailed explanation on creating welds, refer to TM-8021 AVEVA Bocad ™ (3.2) Welds Marking &
Reporting training guide.
Below are some basic explanations regarding symbolic representation of welds, to ISO 2553. The weld is
described by a basic symbol, which gives an accurate definition of the weld structure by means of an arrow
direction, position of reference line and position of symbol.
1. Arrow line
5b. Symbol
6. Fishtail.
Defining near-side or far-side welds has the following effect on designation or creation of the weld:
• Near Side – If this radio button is selected, the user specifies that a weld is only created on one side of
the connection. The user must specify which side of the connection shall be the near side by picking a
point in the current view.
• Near Side Far Side - If this radio button is selected, the user can define different welds for each side.
The Dialogue window provides different setting options for each side. This setting also requires picking
the members to be welded. The user must pick the near side position of the weld in the current view.
• Both Side - If this radio button selected, the user defines the same weld parameters for both sides of the
connection. Thus, only one set of options for the weld are available.
By clicking on the arrow symbol next to the currently selected weld type or the icon Graphical selection
, depending on the selected Standard, a selection of possible weld types is available (for instance for ISO
FILLET, V, HU ...). Once the user has selected a weld type, the user is provided with the relevant input options
(per the Selection of weld symbols and associated Parameters).
By double-clicking on the required symbol, the user applies the graphic to the weld designation, and the
relevant parameters are then displayed in the Dialogue window in the area under Parameters. The user can
find the following variables in an outline: s, a, z, S, E, R, A, C, D, F (explanations can be found under
Parameter).
• From Additional Setting tab, the most frequently used functions are explained below.
• Capture range - defines the allowable distance between the members of a connection. The default
Capture range is 0.15 [mm]. This means that the distance between the members may not exceed
0.15 mm to be able to establish the connection.
• Fish tail comments – User can add three comment lines to display in the fish tail of the weld
designation. This can be additional information such as-Information about the welding method,
valuation group, welding position, filler metal etc. For display each line can be selected
independently of one another.
Click Connection > Create > Automatic Weld and right click to display the Automatic Weld form.
Complete the form as shown and click the OK button.
Repeat the process to create the following welds (weld carrying member first):
• Stiffener to column
Once the plates have been created, Weld the Stiffener plates and cap plate with the column. Note the
column will be the weld carrying member for welds.
• Click Home > Points > Project on Line, create point for
stiffener on the inclined rafter.
• Click View > Temporary > Points/Line and right click to display
the Pick point-line form. Create the view by picking the points
P1 and P2. Ensure ‘2points and pick side’ checkbox is
checked.
• Click Home > Points > Points from member and right click to
display the Points/Points on member form.
• Click Home > Create > Plate and right click to display the Plate
form.
Once the plates have been created, add the welds between the Stiffener plates and the rafter. Note the rafter
will be the weld carrying member for welds.
In this exercise, a baseplate will be added to the column situated at grid line A and B. During creation of base
plate, features described in previous section creation of plates, welds, and also the addition of holes are used.
• All base plates are 15mm thick and Stiffners are 10mm thick.
• The column needs to be shortened by 15mm to allow the baseplate to be at the correct height, at
level 0.
• The four holes on the outside of the baseplate are 20mm diameter. The two inner holes are 30mm
diameter.
In this exercise, on Piperack2_2_Row_A a plate should be created at end of the rafter on AXIS 2.
Once the plates have been created, add the welds between the plates and the rafter. Note the rafter will be
the weld carrying member for welds.
Using the same Dimensions create the connection plates between all the Beams(IPE200) and
Columns(HEA200) on all ROWS.
Once the plates have been created, add the welds between the plates and the beam. Note the beam will be
the weld carrying member for welds.
Using the same Dimensions create the connection plates between all the Beams(IPE200) and
Columns(HEA200) on all AXIS.
Once the plates have been created, add the welds between the plates and the beam. Note the beam will be
the weld carrying member for welds.
Using the Dimensions as shown below, Create the connection plates between all the Beams(IPE200) and
Addl beam (IPE180) on Axis between 2 & 3
Once the plates have been created, add the welds between the plates and the beam. Note the beam will be
the weld carrying member for welds.
In this exercise, the knee bracing members can be created between the IPE200 beams and HEA200
columns at Lev.4880.0.
he Z direction.
This chapter describes the basic concept of different components of assemblies and subassemblies. It is
further useful for generating drawings.
The Main member is very important when considering Assembly drawings, as the front view of the
assembly drawing is the front view of the Main member.
For a detailed explanation on creating assembly drawings, refer to TM-8004 AVEVA Bocad ™
(3.2) Deliverables training guide.
If the automatic assembly drawing is created with the plate PL200*10 as main member, then drawing
is incorrect.
If all members are created with the status Main Member, or all members are created with the status
Secondary member, then assembly drawings may not be usable. The correct element in an Assembly must
have the status Main Member otherwise the user may have issues with the assembly drawings.
The Main or Secondary status of a member can be controlled using Information >Properties on Member
tab by changing ‘Created as main member’ option.
This chapter explains the Copy, mirror and move functions used during modelling of elements, assemblies
and construction groups.
AVEVA Bocad menu bar contains two Copy menus. The Copy menu (in Home Tab) is used for copying 3D
elements and the Copy menu (Graphics tab) is used for copying 2d graphics. In this chapter 3D copy menu
functions are explained.
The Copy by distance option allows the user to copy one or more members, connections etc. over a certain
distance in X, Y and Z direction.
On the Home tab, in the Modify group, clicking the Copy via Distance button from Copy options list and right
click to display the Copy via Dimension form
The Copy, Mirror and Move function operate on similar principles and have similar settings hence the
options which are common to all the functions are explained in this section.
Start list -In the start list frame user has a selections
options list – The Selection option list specify how
processing elements are to be selected e.g. via as
picked, Complete project or assemblies and the
filter checkbox button allow further filtering of the
search results.
The most common used options form Start list are explained below-
• Open references – The options under this frame are used to specify what action is taken when there
are no suitable members to connect the copied members.
This can arise when copying or moving elements which have a connection. An open reference is a
connecting member which has less connection partners than before copying or moving command.
Example of copies with different New connection partners and Loose Open References:
Original Search Delete Loose Keep
6.1.2 Info
When a member is moved, or copied the connection is recalculated and a message will appear in the message
information window.
The Copy by points option allows the user to copy one or more members using points.
On the Home tab, in the Modify group, clicking the Copy via Points button from Copy options list and right
click to display the Copy via Points form
The Copy by angle option allows the user to copy one or more members through a defined angle, around a
specified axis.
The user also has an option to add an offset in the Z direction, applied on each instance of the copied
members.
The Copy via Division option is a combination of the points/line division tool and the copy by points tool. It
allows the dividing of a space for a certain number of copied elements.
Division is the same as in the Divide Line function from the Points Menu.
For a detailed explanation refer to Chapter no.5 of TM-8001 AVEVA Bocad ™ (3.2) Foundations training
guide.
6.5 Move
On the Home tab, in the Modify group, the Move options list contains three functionalities via distance, via
points and via angle for moving a member.
These three option works in the same way as Copy options, but will simply move the position of the selected
members.
6.6 Mirror
The Mirror command allows the user to either copy or move a member or members by mirroring around a
defined plane. The plane can be defined by two or three points. A two-point pick will give a mirror plane
perpendicular to the working plane.
In this worked example how to use copy and mirror command is explained.
Click Home > Modify > Copy > Copy via Points
and right click to display the Copy via Points form
Click Home > Points > Add and right click to display the Add points form
• Pick point P4 (as shown in the image) at intersection of Axis 3 and Row A at Lev.0. A new point P3
will be created.
Click Home > Modify > Copy > Copy via Points and right click to display the Copy via Points form
• The prompt ‘Pick member 1’ will be displayed. Pick two assemblies as shown in above example
and press the Enter key.
• The prompt changes to ‘Pick source plane point 1 from min 1 until max 3’, pick point P1, P2 and
press the Enter key.
• The prompt changes to ‘pick target plane point 1 1from min 1 to max 2’, pick point P3, P4 and
press the Enter key.
Click Home > Modify > Copy > Copy via Distance to display
the Copy via Dimension form
Copy only Column and Rafter members on to Row C and Row D as shown in the image below.
6.7.4 Mirror
In the worked example below how to add stiffener on other side is explained using mirror function.
In the Exercise 6, Knee bracing is created in the view Piperack2_2_ Row_A between Axis 2, on Axis 3.
Copy the knee braces from Piperack2_2_ Lev_4880 on to Piperack2_2_ Lev_7820 as shown.
In this exercise, the cross bracing should be created on Piperack2_2_Axis_2 between Row A-B.
Copy the gusset plate to the bottom of the bracing on Row A using the Mirror command.
Note the bolt hole positions will be different due to the angle back mark, so Bolts should be created
separately.
The plate gusset plate should be moved so that it does not clash with the bracing.
The cross bracing should be created on Piperack2_2_Axis_2 between Row C-D to be created on same steps
as the grid spacing is different.
This chapter explains various tools which can be used to find specific members in the model and make them
easily visible. Also, various checks can be made on the model, including clashes and connectivity checks.
7.1 Search
The Search group contains several options which allow the user to search elements (members, bolts, welds)
and making them easily identifiable in the model. The mostly used functions of these are explained in the next
sub sections.
On the Home tab, in the Search group, clicking Search button displays the
Members/Bolts/… form
The user can save the required settings with a name and recall whenever it is required.
Other search options available on Member filter form will be expalined in concerned chapters.
• Lock view: Checking this check box will lock the created
result window, preventing any changes to be made to it.
• List name: The user can enter the name for the result list.
This list can later be used in various other filter boxes and
will prevent the user from making the same filter selection
repeatedly.
7.1.2 Flash
The Flash option allows the user to make selected elements flash in views to make them easy to identify.
The Representation frame allows the user to define how the flashing is performed.
• Number of Flashes – this defines the number of times the elements will flash in a view.
• Flashing type – this options list allows the users to choose if the elements will flash in all views
simultaneously, or one view at a time.
7.1.3 Emphasize/Shade
The Emphasize Shade option works in a similar way to Flash, but the result of highlighting the element
remains until the user refreshes the view.
On the Home tab, in the Search group, clicking, Emphasize Shade button from Search Members
Emphasizing Shading options list displays the Search Members Emphasizing Shading form
Line width – this options list allows the user to select the
colour for highlighting of the members.
7.2 Check
The Check group contains several options which allow the user to check for clashes within the model, and
also options for checking members without partners. The mostly used functions of these are explained in the
next sub sections.
On the Home tab, in the Check group, clicking Clashing Member from Clashing Member options list displays
the Clashing Members form
The Clashing settings tab contains the settings which allow the
user to define the elements to which clash check has to be
performed and how the clash check will be carried out.
Start list only between each other - only the elements defined
from the Start List will be considered for clash checking. The
filter options are removed from the form.
Only those from start list – will check for clashes only
between members which are in the Start List.
Type – this options list allows the user to define what type of clash
should be reported, i.e. what will be considered as a clash.
Inside eachother/fully colliding – The type of clashes where members which have their volume totally
inside another member, and are identical will be reported. For example, the same column may have been
created twice in the same position, with the same length and specification.
Inside eachother – The type of clashes where members which have their volume totally inside another
member, but are not identical, are reported. For example, different lengths of a beam with the same
specification, on the same axis.
Full Clash – members which pass through each other will be reported.
The Tolerance text box allows the user to define how much the members will need to collide with each
other to be considered as a clash. This value is the distance by which the members must overlap, not the
gap between them. This is used for the Collision type of clash. For example, with a setting of 0.1, only
members which overlap by 0.1mm or more will be considered as a Collision type of clash.
The Members without partner option allows the user to check for members without partners, i.e. members
which have not been bolted or welded.
On the Home tab, in the Check group, clicking Member Without Partner displays the Members without
partner form
The test connections option allows the user to display a view with connections with the settings selected in
the Test Connection function. This function is useful to test connections which get corrupted.
On the Home tab, in the Check group, clicking Test Connection from Test Connection options list displays
the Test Connection form
The Connection Type frame filters the result depending on the type of connection.
With number of connection partners [range from to] - this option will search for connections containing
a number of members. Either a range of members (0-1) or a fixed number can be entered into the text box.
This option is useful when searching for connections which may have been corrupted.
No more within the range of all connecting partners - check for connections where the members are
not physically in contact with each other.
Collision check – check for collisions in the connections and also between the connection elements.
Bolts without holes – check for bolts which do not have holes in the associated members.
Non-relevant bolts [out of list] - By copying members, or subsequently changing members to dummy
members, bolts may belong to a dummy member which means they are no longer listed in the BOM. To
avoid this, a connection can be checked to determine its relevance for the BOM using this option.
The Clashing bolts option allows the user to find bolts which are in contact (clashing) with each other.
On the Home tab, in the Check group, clicking Clashing Bolts from Clashing Member options list displays
the Clashing Bolts form
With all bolts from the database – this option will search the
bolts which are available in the bolt database.
Start list only between each other – only the bolts defined for
the clash check are considered, i.e. only clashes between these
bolts are looked for.
On the Home tab, in the Check group, clicking Bolt Connectivity from Test Connection options list displays
the Bolt Connectivity form
Tool size – will display a table showing the size of the cylinder
that will be modelled according to the bolt size.
Delete after viewing – the cylinders are deleted once the clash
result has been viewed.
Clashing place – this options list allows the test to be run on the
nut side, head side or both sides of a bolt.
Representation – options list allows the user to choose how the results will look on the result window
created, either only the bolts, only the members, all the bolts and members without the collision cylinder
tools, or all the members with the collision cylinder tools.
Bolt length when longer than connectivity tool – when this checkbox is checked, the length of the bolt
will be tested at the head side to see if there is enough room for the bolt to enter the hole. This test is only
done if the bolt length is greater than the length of the collision cylinder tool.
Check insertion direction by length –when this checkbox is checked, the bolt insertion length will be
checked in both directions to determine if the bolt will fit when inserted on either side of the bolt holes.
To compare two members regarding their identities, identity check can be used. The identity check followed
internally set criteria to compare one member with another.
Click Home > Check > Identity Check and right click to
display the Identity Check form

clicking displays the Member to Connection form
Using the Member to member command, a member can be picked, and result window will be displayed,
which consists of all members that are related to a selected member through different type of connections .
Using the Connections to member command, a member can be picked and result window will be displayed,
in which the selected member is represented with its associated connections.
This function provides several tools to measure the distance and angle between points and provide details of
the coordinates at a given point.
8.3.1 Distance
On the Home tab, in the Measure group, clicking Distance from Measure options list and right clicking
displays the Info Point Distances form
The distances given in the form will depend on the view and points
picked.
8.3.2 Angle
On the Home tab, in the Measure group, clicking Angle from Measure options list and right clicking displays
the Info Angle form
Angle between 2 points – if this radio button selected, the result of the
angle between the two pick points is displayed and it is measured in anti-
clockwise direction.
Angle to X Axis – if this radio button selected, the result of the angle
between a line defined by two pick points, and the X axis of the view is
displayed.
Angle between 2 planes – if this radio button selected, the user has to
define two planes with 3-point picks, then determine the angle between
the planes.
8.3.3 Coordinates
On the Home tab, in the Measure group, clicking Coordinates from Measure options list and right clicking
displays the Point Co-Ordinates form
Clicking the OK option will prompt the user to ‘Pick Point’. When a
point is picked, the Points coordinates form is displayed, which will
show the position of the point in relation to several options, as follows:
Main view plane – these are the coordinates, in mm, in relation to the
current main view.
Drawing sheet – these are the coordinates, in cm, for the point as if it
were printed in drawing sheet.
In this worked example, how to change the property of element without deleting the element is explained.
Click Home > Information > Member and right click to display the Members Properties form
In this worked example, how to identify assembly, main and secondary member in assemblies is explained.
In assembly, rafter should be main member (Blue Colour) and all plates will be secondary member (Grey
Colour).
Change the material of all column in Piperack project from to S235JR to S235JRT.
In this chapter, the options for creating sheet in the form of Bent Plates and 3D Flashings is explained.
On the Home tab, in the Create group, clicking Bent Plate button and right clicking displays Flashings/Bent
Plates form
The Member Data tab allows the user to define the Initial Mark Number, Designation, Plate Thickness,
Material and Create member as main member checkbox work same as explained on the Working with
Plates (4.1) previously. Additional options on the form are:
Create as Unique Member – if this option is checked, the member created will be marked as a unique
member, irrespective to another identical bent plate existing in the project.
The Creation Type tab allows the user to define the geometry of the bent plate being created, and how to
position it in the model.
There are two main options, controlled by the Create Points in Front View and Create Points in Side View
radio buttons.
Position - Frame allows the user to define how the bent plate will be positioned in the view plane, in relation
to the two points picked for the start and end of the plate.
Pos Y – this setting defines the justification of the bent panel, left,
right or middle, in respect to the line used to define the shape. An
additional offset value can also be added if required in textbox.
As follows the user can set the Pos Y (justification) of the plate
as before.
By points, the user can define the shape of the bent plate as
before, and then pick two points in a different view to define the
start and end position of the plate, in the Z axis direction of the
creation plane.
9.4 3D Flashing
On the Member tab, in the Create group, the 3D Flashings options list gives several options used
for the creation of a 3D Flashing
The typical workflow for creating a 3D Flashing is to create the Main Plate, usually the base of the
flashing (for example, if considering a box shape, the main plate would be the bottom). Then
additional plates can be created at the edges, at a set size and angle from the main plate. The options
list in 3D Flashings options list are as follows
Delete Tab – allows the user to delete any plate added to the main plate.
Show Unfolding –creates a sketch showing the expanded plate, with a description and bending
angles.
Change into Main Plate – allows the user to select an existing flat plate to be the 3D Flashing main
plate.
Change into Tab – allows the user to change the attributes of a main plate to make it a side plate
for the flashing, by selecting the plate which is to be a Tab, and then selecting the Main plate it is
attached to.
The user can control drawing settings for 3D flashing via PROJECT > Options > Global Settings>
Paper > 3D-flashings.
This chapter explains creation of floor using gratings, special plates and free plates.
On the Member tab, in the Create group, clicking Gratings button and right clicking displays Gratings form
In X/Y Clearance - User can specify a clearance for three areas. An input for Start and End sets a
clearance at the creation start point and the creation end points, which can be determined by picking the
creation area. By entering a value in [mm] for the Middle defines a clearance.
For more information, on X/Y clearance please refer AVEVA Bocad Help menu.
In this worked example, gratings are created to cover the floor in one step.
Select Member > Gratings on the menu bar and right click to display the Gratings < Member form.
With the Punching function, punch the columns in all the gratings in one step:
Create the grating at Level 4880 and Level 7820 Between Piperack_1_Axis 3 and Axis 4.
In the Gratings form, on Execution setting tab use the following values-
• Form the Division in X option list select N times and enter Element quantity 1.
• For the Division in Y option list select Values and in Grid value enter 0,1060 and in Value are option
list select Grid dimension.
