Combat Tanks of Indian Army
Role of MBT
The main battle tank fulfils the role the
British had once called the "universal
tank", filling almost all battlefield roles

• In asymmetric warfare, main battle

tanks are deployed in small, highly
concentrated units. MBTs fire only
at targets at close range and instead
rely on external support such as
unmanned aircraft for long-range
combat.
T-72 Ajeya (Main Battle Tank)

Heron
• The Indian Air Force uses it as a
Medium Altitude Long Endurance
(MALE) UAV.

• It was developed in Israel and has a

flight time of 52 hours, but the
actual flight time depends on the
weight and flight profile it bears.

• Artillery modification, monitoring,

and intelligence functions are
among the advanced features.
Harpy
• It is another Israeli commodity that
is used by the Indian military.

• It has the ability to hold explosives

as well as disrupt radar systems.

• It may also carry out acts to destroy

enemy air defense systems, such as
surface-to-air missiles and anti-
aircraft artillery, in order to monitor
and defeat them.

• It has a top speed of 185 km/hr.

and a range of 500 km.
Nishant
• This UAV was designed for the
Indian Army by the DRDO's
Aeronautical Development
Establishment division.

• It needs a catapult-based
launching system because it is
unable to self-propelling and
must rely on a parachute to land.

• The Indian army has agreed to

the biggest names in the defence industry
are competing for the production contract.

• This UAV has wheels, so it can take off and

land a little faster than Nishant.

• Rustom -2, a version with more

specifications and reliability, is also in the
works.
Integrated Missile Development Programme
• Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who worked with the ISRO and was
closely involved in the development of Satellite Launch
Vehicle, SLV-3, was inducted into the IGMD programme in
1980. Because of the success achieved by India in the guided
missile development programme under his stewardship, he
came to be known as the ’Missile Man of India’.

• The program began in 1980 and ended in 2008, when

the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO)
formally announced on 8 January 2008 that
the strategically integrated guided missile program had
achieved its stated goal of developing the missiles listed in the
program and the missiles induced into the armed forces
after being duly tested
Five Missile systems under this programme

PRITHVI: Short-range ballistic missiles

AGNI: Medium-range ballistic missiles

TRISHUL: short-range SAM

AKASH: Medium-range SAM

NAG: Anti-tank guided missiles

CRUISE MISSILE
• Cruise missiles are guided unmanned missiles and are used against
the targets within atmosphere i.e. terrestrial targets. Jet Engine is
mostly used for the aerodynamic lift.
• They are low-level flights which can be launched from land, air
and water.
• Based on speed the cruise missiles are classified into – Subsonic,
Supersonic and Hypersonic.
• Example: BrahMos, Nirbhay
SUBSONIC
• These missiles travel at the speed of less than 1 Mach number, less
than the speed of sound.
• Example: Nirbhay
SUPERSONIC
• These missiles travel at the speed between 2 – 3 Mach Number
• Example: Brahmos
HYPERSONIC
• These missiles at a speed more than 5 Mach Number. They travel
5 times more than the speed of sound.
• Example: Brahmos II (not yet launched)
BALLISTIC MISSILES
• The flight path of the ballistic missile is
characterised with Ballistic trajectory.
• Ballistic missiles can be launched from land and
sea-based systems.
• During the ascend it takes high arch trajectory
and falls freely during descend.
• Example: Agni, Prithvi, etc.
