4:
The following data table concerns a part of a roadway, 5.0 meter wide, which is partly in cutting
and partly embankment. The relevant earthworks data are given below. Calculate the following:
(a) the cross–sectional area at each chainage point?
(b) The volume of material excavated from the cutting?
(c) The volume of material in filled to form the embankment?

1
Chainage (m) Depth of Cutting Height of Filling Side slope Gradient
0.00 1.10 --- 1 to 2
10.00 2.50 --- 1 to 2
20.00 0.00 0.00 ---
30.00 --- 1.00 1 to 1
40.00 --- 2.30 1 to 1
5:
A proposed service roadway, 5.5 meter wide, is to be built along a center line XY. The embankment
is to have side slopes of 1 to 2. given the following data, calculate the volume of material required to construct the
embankment:

6:
A roadway cutting is to be constructed across an area of undulating ground and cross sections are to be drawn at
points A, B and C. The data tables shown the three cross sections with their respective ground levels and formation
levels, the road is to be 5.00 meters wide. Calculate:

(a) The cross-sectional areas at A, B and C.

(b) The volume of material excavated in constructing the cutting.

A roadway is to be designed on a level terrain. This roadway is 150 meters in length. Four cross sections have
been selected, one at 0 meters, one at 50 meters, one at 100 meters, and one at 150 meters. The cross sections,
respectively, have areas of 40 square meters, 42 square meters, 19 square meters, and 34 square meters. What
is the volume of earthwork needed along this road?
