Creating a Legal Nation of Truth, Justice, and Equal Rights

Position Paper by the Delegate of Ghana

Council: United Nations Human Rights Council

"We speak here of the challenge of the dichotomies of war and peace, violence and non-
violence, racism and human dignity, oppression and repression and liberty and human
rights, poverty and freedom from want.”- Nelson Mandela, Nobel Prize acceptance speech,
1993

In a world where human rights are being undermined, the value of each and every human
being has decreased. Basic human rights have been violated, ranging from women's rights
tyranny, which leads to child malnutrition, to cultural discrimination, and a continuing war
for each man's pride. Human life and fundamental rights have been repressed as the world
has continued to develop and adjust its worldview. When will we be able to proclaim our
independence? Is it today, tomorrow, or when the next generation comes along?

I'd like to make a request to the United Nations and its councils, as well as the nations that
are members of or participate in the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Do you want our country to be a place where people and their dignity, regardless of their
differences, are respected and treated equally in the eyes of the law?

Our country, Ghana, has been befuddled by the loss of human rights from every individual
who was on the verge of losing their value and identity as a human being -I refer to
Ghanaians. In an article by Amnesty International in 2020 Over 1,000 inmates were
pardoned while others had their death sentences changed to life imprisonment. Prisons
were excessively overcrowded, with horrible conditions. The same case to women who has
suffered discrimination and gender-based violence. LGBTQ+ and intersex people continued
to face discrimination and the Health workers were also at risk from the COVID-19 infection.

Women

The law criminalizes rape of women but not spousal rape. Sexual assault on a man may be
charged as indecent assault. Prison sentences for those convicted of rape range from five to
25 years, while indecent assault is a misdemeanor subject to a minimum term of
imprisonment of six months. Domestic violence is punishable by a fine or a sentence of up
to two years imprisonment. Rape and domestic violence remained serious problems.
Authorities did not enforce the law effectively

Children

Education: The constitution provides for tuition-free, compulsory, and universal basic
education for all children from kindergarten through junior high school. The government
continued to implement its plan to provide tuition-free enrollment in senior high school,
including by rolling out a “double-track” system that helped increase enrollment from
800,000 in the 2016-17 school year to 1.2 million in the 2019-20 school year.
