Lesson 8: Needs Assessment

Let’s get started.

1. (Activating Prior Knowledge). Briefly define in your words the terms ‘need’ and ‘assessment’.
Answer – the word “need” refers to something essential or expressing necessity while
“assessment” means a systematic basis for making inferences about the learning and
development of learners.

1. What do you think is the importance of conducting ‘needs assessment’ in your school?
Answer – needs assessment is very important in my school in particular because of the growing
needs of the school in context of the curriculum it implements. For example, the school wants to
reestablish its Special Program in the Arts since its annex campus became a newly established
school separate from the original school that offered SPA program. The school administration is
keen on conducting needs assessment in order to reestablish its Special Program in the Arts.
Especially in this time of pandemic it would be quite challenging to establish such curriculum
given the situation of having no face to face classes and the department of education
streamlining the curriculum in order to suit the needs of the new normal.

school.

2. Of what value is ‘needs assessment’ to you as an instructional leader or teacher in your school?
Answer – As an instructional leader needs assessment is of great importance and value. The needs of
the ever changing curriculum can be addressed by using needs assessment in order to improve one’s
performance, attain positive outputs, address and resolves issues pertaining to the curriculum. Data
and information obtained from needs assessment is important as it becomes empirical evidence of
which decision-making by the curriculum implementers is anchored.
