Weekly Reflective Essay

Today’s class is presenting the theory about “The Classical Schools of Management Thought”.
There are three main classical theories in management thought, that are science management,
administrative management, and bureaucratic management. I think that theories give us a basic way to
understand the management thought. We can see scientific management in Micro, Small, and Medium
Enterprises (MSMEs). In MSMEs, for example garment business, the boss tries to make his business
more efficient. He will calculate how much he need employees and machines based on the demand from
customers. He tries to get the most efficient way to produce the clothes. We can see administrative
management in startup company, for example Traveloka. Traveloka is an application-based travel agent.
In order to create the application, they need software engineers. According to LinkedIn, Traveloka
Indonesia opened six positions for software engineer, there are software engineer manager, software
engineer lead, software engineer senior, software engineer frontend, software engineer backend and
software engineer fintech with software engineer frontend, backend and fintech in the same position and
senior software engineer in the higher position than that three software engineer and software engineer
lead higher position than senior software engineer. Software engineer manager is the highest position in
software engineer. The higher position requires a higher work experience which requires a better
managerial experience. The last one is bureaucratic management. We will find this kind of management
in government, for example ministry. Every ministry has its own rules and laws for their foundation.
Every decision taken must be based on rules and laws in its constitution. I think all of them still have a
positive and negative effects. However, the basic ideas of the three managerials can still be used today
with some modifications and adjustment. We also can see it clearly in a lot of business sectors.
