How Singapore's Most Popular YouTubers

Promote And Monetize Their YouTube
Channel

Imagine this: you’ve got 700,000 YouTube followers. You’re internet-famous and making a
living producing fun videos with your friends.

Sounds like a dream, huh? Well, if you’re the cast of Wah!Banana, Singapore’s most popular
YouTube account, this is everyday life for you.

5 I asked Lingyi Xiong, Producer of Wah!Banana how they got their start, and how they
promote and monetize their channel.

Here’s their advice to you on starting a successful YouTube channel.

Q: How did you launch your YouTube channel?

We started making gaming-related comedies for Garena. The videos were popular among the
10 gamers, so the company launched Wah!Banana to target Singaporean youth with comedic
content.

How do you come up with the topics for videos?

Our team comes up with ideas every week like any other TV show screenplay team.

We generally use different series and formats such as:

15 • 5 Hacks of ___

• Types of people in ___

• ___ vs ___

• How people ___.

2
Sometimes the ideas are inspired by movies, festivals or trending topics.

20 Each week we focus on a couple of formats and ideas. Then we develop one or two ideas into
videos.

At what point did you start getting paid for your YouTube videos?

We started making money from AdSense (the ads you see before or during a YouTube video)
months after we launched the channel. However the pay, even until today, is insignificant
25 because the cost-per-click is low in Southeast Asia.

It wasn’t until we hit 100,000 subscribers that we got our first brand deal with IKEA.

How long did it take you to reach 100,000 subscribers? And how did you get your first
100k subscribers?

It took us 10 months to hit 100,000 subscribers.

30 Here’s how we reached that milestone: We migrated over our solid audience base
on Garena. We also promoted our first 20 videos on Facebook with a budget of USD 200 per
week. We collaborated with YouTubers in Singapore and Malaysia to share each other's fan
base.

How do you promote your YouTube channel and videos?

35 We share our videos on our Facebook and Instagram accounts. Occasionally we ask other
YouTubers to share our new videos, especially if we’ve done a collaboration.

1. Facebook and Instagram: When we launched our channel, we did ads on Facebook
which not only promoted our videos but also our Facebook fan page. Our cast
members have quite a strong following on Instagram and they help share our videos.

40 2. Collaborations: Collaborations especially international collaborations help both

parties to gain new fans from each other's following. We've collaborated with other
YouTubers, mainstream artists, and TV channels such as Comedy Central.

How do you monetize your YouTube channel?

We do branded videos which is also known as native marketing. ( Popular YouTubers

45 generally charge around $20,000 to $50,000 for such videos. ) In a typical branded video, we
feature the brand’s image or message in a lighthearted way without hard selling.

3
What kind of YouTube videos should people create if they want to earn money?

I don’t think people should create YouTube videos because they want to earn money. None of
the YouTubers I know started their channel for this reason.

50 If I have to give any suggestion, I believe all kinds of videos are monetizable, as long as you
are creating better content than other people. Technically speaking, the more generic and
relatable your content is, the bigger your potential audience pool is, thus more money. For
example, a five minute comedy skit will always have a bigger audience pool than a 20-
minute short film. But that also means more competition. So, make videos you believe in and
you might have a chance.

56 What are some tips for brands when pitching to you?

It's important for us to know the purpose of the campaign, for example, whether clients want
to build awareness or drive downloads.

We would also love to know the existing brand image/culture which helps us to make a quick
60 call on if our brand identities are in sync.

Tottori, an area in western Japan, is known for its sand dunes, but there’s
so much more that this prefecture has to offer. In this article, we
introduce attractions found in the western, central, and eastern areas of
Tottori.

Tottori Prefecture is located on the Sea of Japan side of the

Chugoku Region, west of Osaka and Kyoto. Along with neighboring
Shimane, this area is also called the San’in Region.
Tottori has the smallest population of all the prefectures in Japan,
but it also boasts one of Japan’s largest sand dunes, the Tottori
Sand Dunes (Tottori Sakyu), as well as other impressive natural
attractions that have been designated the San’in Kaigan Geopark.
From spring to fall, visitors can enjoy hiking in the mountains or visit
the seaside to go for a swim or kayaking. Snow covers the region in
the winter, especially the mountainous areas, where you can enjoy
skiing, snowboarding, or other snow activities.

5
Thanks to its rich natural surroundings, the prefecture even offers
delicious cuisine. Seafood such as crab and tuna are at the top of
the list for things to savour here.
Tottori is also known for being the hometown of manga artist
Shigeru Mizuki, who is best known for his GeGeGe no Kitaro series.
It’s also the home of the author of Detective Conan: Gosho
Aoyama. You’ll see characters from these manga series all around
the prefecture.

Your bases for sightseeing will probably be Tottori Station, Kurayoshi Station, Yonago Station,
and Sakaiminato Station, so traveling by train is convenient for transportation between cities.
For destinations outside of the city or in the suburbs, you can catch a bus or taxi.

Places, Cuisine, Access And More!

Tottori Sightseeing Guide – Historical Sites, Local Food And More!.

Some of the local foods you should definitely try while in Tottori include kaisendon(sashimi
bowl) using fresh seafood like crab and tuna, as well as fresh seasonal fruit such as Nijisseiki
Nashi pears and melon, as well as livestock products such as the Daisen chicken.
The prefecture also offers some unique gourmet dishes. Especially famous are the Tottori
gyukotsu ramen, which uses dashi broth from beef bones, and Fried Noodles with Offal, made
with a salty sweet miso sauce. We highly recommend trying out local cuisine when visiting!

6
Tottori is especially well known for its sand dunes, but not many know about the prefecture’s
countless other natural, historical, and cultural attractions.
The area is easily accessible by limited express train from Osaka, so we recommend stopping
by when visiting western Japan!
