Rationale

Project PPE (Portfolio Predicate on Exemplar) is a backup contingency


response of the Schools Division of Surigao del Sur for learning delivery and
learning resource which parallel to the on-going endeavors of the higher
offices in the Department. It is the utilization of a lesson exemplar that is
streamlined in a teacher-and-learner-friendly format to cater to the new
classroom setup in light of the COVID-19 health crisis. These exemplars will
be paired with a self-contained and self-instructional portfolio.

The portfolio is a deliberate collection of works that highlight a learner’s effort


that would enable the him/her to see his/her growth and achievement, ability
to reflect on his/her own work and ability to establish goals for future
learning.

Welcome to the TLE 6 – 1st Quarter Week 8: Exemplar on How to be a
Successful Entrepreneur in Animal/Fish Raising
This exemplar was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators from different schools in the Division to assist you in helping the
learners meet the standards anchored on Most Essential Learning
Competencies (MELC) set by the Department while overcoming the
constraints in schooling brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this
also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking
into consideration their needs and circumstances.
As a teacher, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
exemplar in the most fit modality. You also need to keep track of the
learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning through
portfolio assessments.

What is It

An entrepreneur is a person who organizes a venture to benefit from an


opportunity, rather than working as an employee. They play a key role in
any economy. These are the people who have the skills and initiative
necessary to anticipate current and future needs and bring good new
ideas to market.

Qualities of a Successful Entrepreneur

1. Disciplined- successful entrepreneurs are disciplined enough to


take steps everyday toward the achievement of their objectives.

2. Confidence- entrepreneurs are confident with the knowledge that


they will make the businesses succeed.

3. Open Minded- for them, every event and situation is a business


opportunity.

4. Self Starter-They are proactive, not waiting for someone to give


them permission.

5. Competitive- many companies are formed because an
entrepreneur knows that they can do a job better than another.

6. Creativity- one facet of creativity is being able to make


connections between seemingly unrelated events or situations.

7. Determination-They are determined to make all of their endeavors


succeed, so they try and try until it does.

8. Strong People Skills- They know how ..to motivate their


employees so the business grows overall. They are very good at
highlighting the benefits of any situation and coaching others to
their success.

9. Strong work ethic- They are the first person to arrive at the office
and the last to leave. Their mind is constantly on their work.

10. Passion- the most important trait of a successful entrepreneur.


Trait is passion. They genuinely love their work and willing to put those
extra hours make their business succeed.

Successful Entrepreneur in Animal and Fishing Industry

Duncan Berry

Duncan Berry spent his teenage years in the 1960s fishing salmon
out of the Pacific Ocean on his family’s commercial vessel. He’s aiming to
change the entire sea food industry with his company Fish people.

Berry’s career path between the time he was named captain of his
family’s vessel at the age of 17 to when he co-founded Fish people in
2020. He started a design business, and then went into apparel industry.

Fish peoples’ products which include frozen meal kits, fish fillets and
shelf stable soups are available in more than 6,000 retail stores, including
Kroger Stores, Weg mans, Whole Foods and Sam’s Club Stores and online
through Amazon Fresh and Thrive Market. From 2015 to 2016, the brand
doubled its revenue and projects another 100 percent growth in a year.

Robert Petines

From Cagayan Valle. In 1988, he was given a Prestigious Award as


National Gawad Saka Awardee as recognition for his effort.

The fish industry also gave him the Fish for Every Filipino with
adequate management practices.

Award for his great contribution to industry, The Bureau of Fisheries
and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) support him when he adopted the “Sex-
Reversed Tilapia Production “and because of this, he is now considered as
the most successful tilapia raiser in his region.

Oscar Garin

His profession as civil engineer did not stop him from going back to
his original passion that is raising sows or fully grown pigs in his backyard.
In 1988, he started raising sows in a small piggery. Because of his
dedication and hard work, his small piggery turned into a commercial hog
farm with 500 sows.

He named it Octagon Farm Product and Supply. He continued to


raise other livestock animals like goat, cattle, and sheep and even
ventured into production of poultry animals such as turkey, ducks and
game fowl.
Since he produces high quality breeder sows, he became a major
supplier in Southern Ilo-Ilo supplying 30% of the pork from his farm. He
transport the remaining70% and sells them to Metro Manila Market

Rafello Khongwar- Successful entrepreneur in piggery farming

Khongwar is 30 years old graduate student from Indian District of


Ri-Bhoi. He started piggery and poultry initially by keeping ten pigs and
1,000 poultry birds in properly constructed houses where he put all the
required facilities like netting, wiring, feeding trays, etc. with proper
management. For one year, his poultry and piggery product was
successfully achieved.

The following year, he started fisheries and agriculture with proper


stocking ratio and crops’ selection like maize, rice and vegetables to feed
the pigs, poultry and fish. The pig and poultry waste was collected and
sold it to the other farmers after applying into his agricultural field and
fisher pond.

Joemar Surmion- Successful animal raiser

The young Ilongo businessman from Koronadal City, who has


the passion in farming, He is a graduate of Commerce and earned units in

Masters of Business Administration. He works in a bank and in Insurance
Company.

Through patience and hard work, he was able to develop his farm. In
all trainings he attended both in private and public agencies greatly
helped him in applying the technologies in aquaculture, livestock and
poultry raising, in the farm. He created a fish pond for tilapia and hito. He
utilized everything in the farm. The spring water was done through
gravitational irrigation, there he put pipes directly to the fishponds, and
utilized animal manure to fertilizer. These experiences allowed him to
save costs from the farm.
