METHODS OF TEACHING

INTRODUCTION:

One of the basic problems in physical education classes is the

realization of the curriculum. The distribution and concretization of
program tasks in the teaching of physical education for a large number
of teachers is complex and even difficult when the requirements of
modern teaching are taken into account.
With the development of physical education, teaching methods also
developed. Bearing in mind that through the teaching of physical
education can only influence the proper growth and development of
students, their motor and functional abilities, the choice of effective
methods is a real problem. Teaching methods derive from teaching
practice because each teacher is constantly researching and
supplementing them with various innovations. It is up to the teacher to
decide which methods to apply, which gives him/her the opportunity to
constantly research and innovate in the methods he/she applies.

What is Methods of Teaching?

- The term ‘method’ can be thought of as the most effective and

economic way of learning to take place among students.
Communication of ideas and development of concept in a precise
manner based on logical development of subject is the most
important prerequisite in teaching a subject.

- Methods of teaching differs from stage to stage and from age to age
group. The method to be adopted depends upon many factors which
include the environment and the familiar situations or experiences
that are to be correlated effectively. While teaching a set of
pupils with varying interest, aptitudes one has to be aware of the
psychological basis of teaching learning process.

- Method of Teaching is defined as instructing, tutorial or

educating, as a profession it is taken as a mission to mold the
young. It refers to the vital role of teachers in engaging students
in activities that will enable them to acquire knowledge and skills
at the same time develop values and attitude.

Why methods of teaching are important?

For a teacher every subject, method is important. Method is nothing but
a scientific way of presenting the subject to the children.

For an effective learning of any subject the method has to be good as

the content. It is through method only that it is possible to make a
subject interesting and useful. Without method, teaching would be hard.
The arrangement of the subject and its presentation is very important
for the successful teaching.

Teaching is thus the most difficult task and everybody is not fit to be
a teacher. In order to make the children learn more effectively the
teacher has to adopt the right method of teaching.

Traditional Versus Modern Methods of Teaching

- Traditional method relies mainly on textbooks while the modern

method relies on hands-on materials approach. In traditional
method, presentation of materials starts with the parts, then moves
on to the whole while in the modern approach, presentation of
materials starts with the whole, then moves to the parts.
Traditional method emphasizes on basis skills while modern method
emphasizes on big ideas. With traditional method of teaching,
assessment is seen as a separate activity and occurs through
testing while with modern method of teaching, assessment is seen as
an activity integrated with teaching and learning, and occurs
through portfolios and observation. Modern teaching method is more
activity-based and centers the learner’s mind which involves them
entirely into the process of learning. In the modern teaching
method, curriculum teaching and planning are done keeping the
learner as the primary target.

Roles of Methods

As a clearly defined way of teaching, various methodologies present

unique courses of action that will help teacher immensely in planning
how to go about a daily lesson Deciding on methods to be used assists in
a number of ways:

1. It serves as a guide in preparing all the materials, simple tools

and equipment that will be needed. The availability amount will be
determined ahead of time.

2. The activities or learning tasks that will be perform could be

determined, including the approximate time to be allotted for each
and the proper sequencing to be followed.
3. How the activities will be perform in order to progress in the
right direction will be clearly understood anticipated by the
leaders if some are assigned.

4. A method that would require movement from one place to another

will be planned with much care to avoid.

5. The instructional objective that would be highlighted will dictate

the method to be employed.

6. The method will serve as a guide in observing performance

indicators.

7. The method employed could help plan the assessment instrument that
could reveal whether the objectives has been achieved.

8. A well- planned procedure will add to a strong feeling of

confidence and security for the teacher as well for the students.

9. It is so fulfilling and gratifying for a teacher to develop

competence in deciding on a method to use and implementing it
successfully.

Criteria for Method Selection

1. Subject to be taught

2. Instructional Equipment, Tools and Materials

3. The Students Abilities

4. The Students Interests

5. Previous Learning or Experiences

6. The Kind of Participation Excepted

7. Context of the Teaching Situation

8. Knowledge and Ability of the teaching

9. Safety Precautions

CONCLUSION:

To achieve the goal of teaching, the teacher must adopt effective

teaching methods in education. The teacher has many options to choose
from different teaching techniques designed specifically for teaching
and learning.

The teaching method should be adopted on the basis of certain

criteria like the knowledge of the students, the environment and the set
of learning goals decided in the academic curriculum.
