Indication:
Management of mild to moderate hypertension. Treatment of edema associated w/ HF, renal dysfunction, Cirrhosis
Action:
Increases excretion of sodium and water by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in the distal tube. Promotes excretion of chloride, potassium, magnesium and
bicarbonate. May produce arteriolar dilation
Adverse reactions (most frequent and life-threatening):
Dizziness, drowsiness, hypokalemia Stevens-Johnsons Syndrome
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity. Some products contain tartrazine and should be avoided in pts with know intolerance. Anuria, lactation
Dose Range:
PO adults 125-2g/day in 1-2 divided doses. Generally given daily but may be given every other day or 2-3 days/wk.
Nursing Implications:
Monitor BP, intake, output and daily weight. Assess feet, legs and sacral area daily for edema. Assess for nausea, vomiting, muscle cramping, confusion, parathesia.
