1. Let
1 3
A=
−2 −8
.
a. Compute the matrices A2 , AAT and A−1 .
b. Find the numbers p and q such that A2 = pA + qI where I is the 2 × 2 identity matrix.
c. Write A and AT as a product of elementary matrices.
d. Let B = A − tI, where t is a scalar. For which values of t is B not invertible?
2. Consider the matrices
 
1 0 −1  
2 1 0 1 0

 B = 2 1 0 −1
1 0
0 −1 2 −1
−1 1 2
a. Calculate the matrix AB.
b. Calculate the determinant det (AB). Cite any methods used in your answer.

3. For a real number c, consider the linear system

x1 + x2 + cx3 + x4 = c
−x2 + x3 + 2x4 = 0
x1 + 2x2 + x3 − x4 = −c
. For what c, does the linear system have a solution?
4. For the sytem
x − y + 3z = 1
y = −2x + 5
9z − x − 5y + 7 = 0
do the following
a. Write the system in the matrix form AX T = B for X = [x y z]
b. Write out the augmented matrix for this system and calculate its row-reduced echelon
form.
c. Calculate the inverse of the coefficient matrix A you found in part (a), if it exists or show
that A−1 does not exists.
d. Find all solutions, if any exists by using the Gauss-Jordan reduction method.
