Taxonomy

What is Taxonomy?
The word taxonomy is originated from 2 Greek words “Taxis” (Arrangement), and “Nomia”
(Method), so, can be defined as systematic classification or arrangement of any type of material, is
known as taxonomy. It is also known as science of arrangement.

In biology, this is considered as a branch of science, which is related to classification of organized,


both animals and plants. Taxonomy is also used as science of defining and naming groups of
biological organisms, on the basis of shared characteristics.

Use of taxonomy in Forensic Science


a. In forensic science, it is used for proper recognition and classification of physical
evidences.
b. It can also be used for matching of evidences with classified records, for e.g.

1. Proper classified record of fingerprint is available which can be used for matching of
fingerprints obtained from crime scene or other articles related to crime. The matching can
be done manually or by using automatic fingerprint identification system (AFIS).

2. Recently, most of the countries have created database of DNA profiling of all residents,
which is very useful in identifying a person, who can be the victim or accused, in a particular
case.
