These instructions are for setting up a network printer on Windows 2008 so Windows 7 clients can
connect and print to network printers. The IP addresses and names will need to be changed from
these instructions to match the network they are used for.
1. Download basic or network compatible drivers. This is usually easy for business printers, but
many ink jets and smaller printers try to give you installer with crapware.
2. Save file to shared location or on the print server itself.
3. Try to use Winzip to unzip files from the download even if an EXE. Often times the EXE is just a
packed zip file.
4. If you can't unzip, then run the EXE file and let it unzip or install to a location you choose. Don't
allow program to go further and actually install the driver itself.
Choose Create new Port and select Standard TCP/IP (glug glug) Port and click Next
Enter the network printer IP address, uncheck "Query the Printer" checkbox and select Next
1. Click Have Disk button and browse to printer driver you unzipped earlier.
2. Pick the .INF file
3. Click Open, OK, and then Next
Note: If you happen to get a message to use the currently installed driver choose Replace and
then Next. This will come up if you were unable to unzip and had to run the installer to get the files
inside.
Change printer name to the same name it has on the Windows 2003 network or if new printer use
a name that follows the printer naming conventions and click Next
Note: There should not be any spaces in the printer name.
Finish
Click Print a Test Page if you want to verify function then click Finish
Your printer should now be available to Windows 7 clients to add from the network
