PostScript printer driver guide

For
Intel-based Macs
This guide describes the installation and setup procedures of the PostScript printer driver for
Intel-based Macs.

A PostScript printer driver, a separately distributed CD-ROM is now available, with some
restrictions. You can now install the printer driver and set it up for PostScript printing on
Mac OS X v10.4 and later on Intel-based Macs.

Read this guide carefully before installing and using the PostScript printer driver.

Before using the PostScript printer driver

The distributed PostScript printer driver for Intel-based Macs can be used on both Intel-
based Macs and PowerPC-based Macs.
The PostScript printer driver for Intel-based Macs has the following notes and restrictions.
Details of new cautions and restrictions shall be separately noted

Code base of the application

You can use both Universal and PowerPC-based applications on Intel-based Macs,
with PowerPC-based applications running Rosetta (the included PowerPC emulator).
While Universal applications run natively on Intel-based Macs, they can also be made
to run using Rosetta. To find out which code base of the application is in use, follow the
procedures shown below:

To find out code base of the application:

1 Click the application's icon.

2 From the Finder "File" menu, choose "Get Info" (or press Command-I).

3 In the "Get Info" windows, refer to a "Kind" section below "General".

- Application (Universal) :
Runs on both Intel and PowerPC processors
- Application (PowerPC) :
Runs on PowerPC (Rosetta) processor only

1
Preset print option
You can save print option settings to your hard disk, enabling you to load specifically
configured settings for a particular job as presets. If you use the Preset print option in
the Intel-based Macs, Presets saved under both the Intel code and PowerPC code
applications may exist. If you try to use a Preset saved under a different code based
application, some of the values in the printer driver settings may not be properly
reflected. When you save the Preset, create an easily recognizable Preset name to
enable you to see under which code base the Preset was created.

Copier/printer output options

When printing to your choice of the output option, always uncheck Collated in the
Copies & Pages pop-up menu of the printer driver.

Fiery Job Notes/Owner Information

Fiery Job Notes in the printer dialog menu drop-down list may show Owner Informa-
tion, depending on the product you use

ColorSync
If Color Conversion for ColorSync is set to Standard, specifying ColorWise print options
have no effect. To specify ColorWise print options, set Color Conversion for ColorSync
to In Printer.

Installing PostScript printer driver files

You can install the PostScript printer driver files on your Intel-based Macs, using the
Installer.

NOTE:
The Administrator name and password are required for installation.

Important notice:
If you have already installed the Mac OS X printer driver included in the media pack to
your computer, delete that printer driver from Print & Fax in System Preferences. If there
are files named "EF***.plugins" in your computer/Library/Printers/PPD Plugins, which
correspond to the ones in OSX/Printer Driver folder on the User Software (PS Driver) CD
included in the media pack, delete them all. Check the file names in your CD that they
differ depending on the product you use. It is necessary to delete these files from your
computer beforehand

Important notice:
Make sure to quit all currently running applications before launching the Installer.

2
Use the following procedure to install the printer driver files.

To install printer driver files:

1 Double-click the disk image file having the extension that bears the name of your
controller product.

2 Double-click the virtual disk icon mounted on the desktop, and then double-click
"OSX/Printer Driver/OSX Installer".

3 Follow the on-line instructions to complete the installation.

Setting up PostScript printer

You can set up your PostScript printer driver either as an AppleTalk printer or an IP Printing
printer ((LPR, Raw (9100), IPP) that uses an IP address on Mac OS X. Refer to the Mac OS
X help and consult your network administrator to choose either way.

NOTE:
Network options should be properly configured on Mac OS X v10.4 and your printer in
advance.

Use the following procedure to set up the printer:

NOTE:
User Print & Fax in System Preferences or Printer Setup Utility to add, delete, or switch
the default printer.

As an AppleTalk printer:

TO SET UP PRINTER:

1 Click Print & Fax in System Preferences and click Printing.

2 Click the + button in the window.

Printer Setup Utility launches.

3
3 Click Default Browser.
The Default Browser window appears.

4 Choose your printer from Printer Name. If you want to specify a different AppleTalk
Zone, click More Printers, choose the zone, and then click Add.
The printer name selected appears for Name.

5 The printer driver (PPD) that corresponds to the printer that you have chosen is
displayed for Print Using. Make sure to choose the correct printer driver if there is
more than one printer driver available for the printer that you use. When you have
finished making your selection, click Add.
The Default Browser window closes and the screen returns to the Printer List window.

TO CONFIRM OR CHANGE PRINTER NAME OR SETTINGS:

NOTE:
The Installable Options window may automatically appear after you have clicked Add in
step 5 of the procedure provided immediately above so that you can continue on to
configure installable options accordingly. When the Installable Options window doesn't
appear, use the following procedure to manually access the Printer List window.

1 Click the printer for your controller product in the Printer List, and then click Printer
Setup.

2 Choose installable options in the Printer Info window.

NOTE:
If you cannot select the installable options that match the available copier/printer
configuration, click Apply Changes and close the window first, and then reopen the
window.

3 Confirm each setting and click Apply Changes.

4 Choose Close Window from the Windows menu and close the Printer Info window.

5 Choose Quit System Preferences from the System Preferences menu.

System Preferences closes.

4
As an IP printer:
The following three protocols are recommended for the PostScript printer driver for Intel
based Macs: LPR, Raw(9100), and IPP. However, these protocols are not fully supported.
You may want to change the setting later.

TO SET UP PRINTER:

1 Click Print & Fax in System Preferences and click Printing.

2 Click the + button in the window.

Printer Setup Utility launches.

3 Click IP Printer.
The IP Printer window appears.
For LPR: Choose Line Printer Daemon - LPD.
For Raw (9100): Choose HP Jet Direct - Socket.
For IPP: Choose Internet Printing Protocol - IPP.

4 Enter the IP address or DNS name of the printer for Address, and then enter the print
connection for Queue.
NOTE:
For LPR, enter the printer queue name for the print connection. For more information,
see "Completing Standard TCP/IP (Raw or LPR) printing connections" in Printing from
Windows.
For Raw(9100), leave the queue name blank.
For IPP, enter the printer queue name for the print connection. Make sure to manually
enter the information after the IP address.
e.g. If the URL you want to specify is 'http://10.11.036.60/ipp/printer,' enter "ipp/printer" .
For more information, see "Completing IPP connections" in Printing from Windows.

5 The IP address or DNS name entered appears for Name. Click Canon and chose the
printer driver (PPD) that corresponds to the printer that you are using from Printer
Using. Make sure to choose the correct printer driver if there is more than one printer
driver available for the printer that you use. When you have finished making your
selection, click Add.
The IP Printer window closes and the screen returns to the Printer List window.

5
NOTE:
For LPR and IPP, you can add the printer queue information in the Name field. It is
highly recommended that you add the information if you want to specify more than one
printer queue name. Otherwise, the IP address or DNS name only appears in the
Printer List window and you cannot distinguish the printer by the printer queue name
alone.
e.g. If you specified Print Queue, the queue name would be "print-10.11.136.60".

TO CONFIRM OR CHANGE PRINTER NAME OR SETTING:

2 Choose installable options in the Printer Info window.

NOTE:
When you cannot select the installable options that match the actual copier/printer
configuration, click Apply Changes and close the dialog box first, and then reopen the
dialog box.

3 Confirm each setting and click Apply Changes.

4 Choose Close Window from the Windows menu and close the Printer Info window.

5 Choose Quit System Preferences from the System Preferences menu.
