Standard revised by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry
through deliberations at the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee
as the result of proposal for revision of Japanese Industrial Standard
submitted by Japan Packaging Institute (JPI)/J apanese Standards Asso-
ciation (JSA) with the draft being attached, based on the provision of Ar-
ticle 12 Clause 1 of the Industrial Standardization Law applicable to the
case of revision by the provision of Article 14.
Consequently JIS Z 0201:1989 is replaced with this Standard.

JAPANESE INDUSTRIAL STANDARD JIS Z 0201 : 2017

Methods of designating on component parts and points of

containers when testing

Introduction
This Japanese Industrial Standard has been prepared based on ISO 2206 : 1987,
Edition 2, with some modifications of the technical contents made for the purpose of
enhancing usability.
The vertical lines on both sides and dotted underlines indicate changes from the cor-
responding International Standard. A list of modifications with the explanations is
given in Annex JA.

1 Scope
This Standard specifies a system for identifying parts of transport packages and
containers when testing.
NOTE: The International Standard corresponding to this Standard and the
symbol of degree of correspondence are as follows.
ISO 2206 : 1987 Packaging - Complete, filled transport packages -
Identification ofparts when testing (MOD)
In addition, symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in the
contents between the relevant International Standard and JIS are IDT
(identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) according to
ISO/lEe Guide 21-1.

2 Normative references
The following standards contain prOVISIons which, through reference in this text,
constitute provisions of this Standard. The most recent editions of the standards (in-
cluding amendments) indicated below shall be applied.
JIS Z 0102 Kraft paper sacks - Vocabulary and types
JIS Z 0104 Glossary of terms used in corrugated fibreboard industry
JIS Z 0108 Packaging - Vocabulary

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this Standard, the terms and definitions given in JIS Z 0102, JIS
Z 0104, and JIS Z 0108 apply.

4 Identification of parts of packages

The transport package or container shall be placed in the position in which it is
normally transported. Identification of parts of the transport packages and containers
of different shapes shall be as given in the following. If the orientation of the content

within the package, if any, is critical in ensuring reproducibility in repacking in the

middle of test or in conducting retests, the transport package shall be stated in the test
report and the orientation of the content shall be indicated on the container.
Should any inconveniences arise as to handling of a) to d), the identification method
shall be as agreed between the interested parties, and the agreed method shall be in-
dicated in the test report.
a) Parallelepipedal packages The parallelepipedal package shall be placed with one
of its end panels facing the observer, and identified according to the following (see
Figure 1 and EigTIX~)~).
1) Faces The upper face of the package shall be identified as No.1, the side panel
on the observer's right as No.2, the bottom as No.3, the side panel on the ob-
server's left as No.4, the end panel near to the observer as No.5, and the end
panel far from the observer as No.6.
The manufacturer's joint, if any, shall be placed vertically on the observer's
right and identified as No.5. If the package has more than one manufacturer's
joint, the principle outlined above shall be adopted by arbitrarily selecting one
end panel as No.5.
Example Face 5
2) Edges Each edge shall be identified by the digits designating the two surfaces
the junction of which forms this edge. The digits shall be indicated in the ascend-
ing order.
Example Edge 2-3
3) Corners Each corner shall be identified by the digits designating the three sur-
--`,,`,``,`,,,,,,,,``,,`,,``,```-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

faces that meet to form this corner. The digits shall be indicated in the ascending
order.
Example Corner 2-3-5

b) Cylindrical packages The cylindrical package shall be identified according to the

following (see Figure 3).
1) Toplbottom edge periphery (roll-crimped edges) The ends of two perpendicular
diameters on the upper surface of the cylinder shall be designated as 1-3-5-7 and
the other ends of lines parallel to the cylinder axis passing through these points
respectively shall be designated as 2-4-6-8. If the package has one or more manu-
facturer's joint, one of the joints shall occupy 5-6, and the remaining designations
shall be made on the same principle as outlined above.
2) Lateral surface Each of the lines parallel to the cylinder axis shall be designated
as 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8. If the package has a manufacturer's joint, the joint shall
occupy 5-6.

c) Sacks and bags The sack or bag shall be identified according to the following
(Figure 4).

The uppermost face shall be identified as No.1, the side on the right as No.2, the
lowermost face as No.3, the side on the left as No.4, the filling end, if any, as No.
6, and the sealed end (bottom end) as No.5. (See Figure 4.)
If the sack or bag has no distinction between upper face and lower face, it shall be
placed such that the seam, if any, of the bag or sack is downwards in the case of a
longitudinal seam, and on the right in the case of a side seam, or with one seam on
the right and one seam on the left in the case of two side seams.
Sacks or bags of other shapes shall be identified according to the method described
above.

d) Miscellaneous packages Miscellaneous packages other than the packages de-

scribed above shall be identified according to the following.
Depending on the nature and shape of the package, it may be convenient to give a
number to each section of the package in accordance with the method derived from
one of those indicated in a) to c) .

5 Additional matter to be reported

Geometrical relationship between parts of the transport package or the container
and its content that are considered to have an influence on test results, if any, shall be
defined by consultation between the interested parties and shall be recorded in the test
report.
