An Introduction to the Process
As you think about writing a research paper, you may wonder how this assigment differs from
other kinds of paper you have written. Sometimes virtually all the information and ideas will have
been in these cases, your work will consist mainly of finding the information and organizing it into a
coherent report. More often, however, you will be encouraged to judgment about the information you
you discover in the sources. For example,if you had chosen to investigate the controversy over the
effect of acid rain on forredt and lakes, you would be expected to evaluate.

*A more detailed look at the research process*

entire books have been written on these subjects.

Too loosely defined acid rain cancer cures computer assisted education illegal immigration what
would you be looking for in your reading what questions would you answering?

Topic a reasonably narrow clearly defined area of interest that could be troughtly investigated within
the limits set for a given research assignment here are some topics that might work quite well for a
paper of seven to ten pages.

Thesis a general statement that announces the major conclusions you reacted throught a thoughtful
analysis of all yours sources. This statement appears at the beginning of your paper the main body
will then explain illustrate argue for or in some sense prove the Thesis

Hypothesis your prediction made sometime Before reading the source as to what your research will
reveal about the topic that is what answers you expect to find for the major question raised by the
topic as you will see this educated guess helps you to find exactly the information you need as
quickly and efficiently as possible by keeping your attention focused on limited number of cific
aspects of the topic.*A more detailed look research process*

Now that you have these definition clearly in mind we can examine the process more closely

Step Four: ariving at the thesis.Analvze the information contained in your notes to de termine
weather your hypothesis was correct. Id it was, it becomes your thesis. Id the hypothesis was not
fully supported by the evidence you gathered, write a thesis state ment that reflects the full picture
discovered through your research. Here is the point at which your judgmeat plays its most important
role.
