By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to understand modal verbs by circling the correct
LEARNING OBJECTIVES words for 8 sentences, choosing the correct answers for the 6 sentences and circling 16 correct
words in the dialogue.

ACTIVITIES
1. Pupils work in pairs to play a game revising the use of modal verbs
2. Each pupil is given a paper with a list of different abilities.
PRE-LESSON 3. Pupils walk around and talk to each other. They need to put a different peer’s name against
each of the abilities.
4. After 5 minutes, pupils go back to their seats and their answers are discussed as a class.
5. Pupils turn to page 73 English Download and read the Grammar box about modal verbs of
ability, permission, requests, offers and suggestions.
6. Pupils read 2 sentences in Activity 2 and identify as a class which sentence is more formal.
7. Pupils read the instructions and the sentences in Activity 3.
8. Pupils circle the correct words for 8 sentences.
9. Pupils compare answers in small groups of 3 or 4 before discussing as a class.
10. Pupils read the instructions and 6 sentences in Activity 4.
11. Pupils choose the correct answers for the 6 sentences.
12. Pupils compare answers in small groups of 3 or 4 before discussing as a class.
13. Pupils turn to page 75 and read the Grammar box about modal verbs of obligation,
necessity, prohibition, possibility, deduction, advice and criticism.
LESSON DEVELOPMENT 14. Pupils read the 2 sentences in Activity 2 and identify the type of modals they use and each
of the modals express and in which sentence did something happen even though it was not
necessary.
15. Pupils discuss the answer as a class.
16. Pupils read the instruction and a dialogue in Activity 3.
17. Pupils circle 16 correct words in the dialogue.
18. Pupils compare answers in small groups of 3 or 4 before discussing as a class.
Differentiated Actvities:
Less proficient pupils: Organise talk partners or grouping so that a more proficient pupil can help
and support a less proficient pupil.
More proficient pupils: Write their own sentences expressing ability, permission, a request, an
offer and a suggestion.
POST-LESSON 19. Pupils review their learning in this lesson by writing gapped sentences using the pairs in
Activity 3.
20. Pupils then swap with a partner who must write the correct words in the gaps.
