Computer Systems and IT Applications Unit 8: Application Software Introduc' Computer software is a set of instructions that tell a computer how it should do something. Two types: © System Software Application Software * The system software is the software that operates the computer, therefore, the computer can't function without the system software, © Software designed for end-users, which is written by computer programmers to solve a specific problem. © Helps user to work faster, more efficiently and productively. Types of Application Software * Application software can be further subcategorized as © Packaged Software Customized or Tailored Software Packaged Software ‘© The software which is the generalized set of programs designed and developed for general purpose. * Also called universal software as it can be used by users and organizations all over the world © Eg. Word Processing Software - MS Word Spreadsheet Software - MS Excel Web Browser Software - IE, Chrome © Accounting Software - Tally Customized/Tailored Software * Software designed to meet the specific requirements of an organization or individual. ‘Its written on the demand of an individual's needs and serves only one user/organization. ° Eg. Word Processing Software Used to create letters, word sheets, type papers, etc. © MS Word, WordPad, NotePad, etc. 2. Database Software © Used for creating, editing and maintaining database files and records. © Oracle, MS Access, etc. 3, Spreadsheet Software © Used for organizing, storing and analyzing data in tabular form. © MS Excel, Apple Numbers, etc. 4, Multimedia Software © Used to play multimedia files. © Real Player, Media Player. 5. Presentation Software © Used to display information in the form of a slide show. MS PowerPoint, Keynote (Apple) 6. Internet Browser © Used to surf the web, read their emails, and create web pages. © IE, Netscape Navigator, Chrome, etc. 7.
