ACT 1
(The King is sitting on his throne. The Peasant and the Peasant are standing in front of the king.
The Soldier is standing next to the King)
PEASANT: I beg your pardon, Your Majesty. It is true that I stole some loaves, but I did it for my
family.
PEASANT2: (crying) We haven't eaten anything in days. My children cry day and night.
KING: That doesn't matter to me! You stole from me and you must pay for it.

PEASANT: Your majesty, if I could work I would, but the terrible disease that I suffer in my legs
does not allow me to do it. The pain is so intense!
KING: (stands up and says to Soldier) Take them away. They will remain locked up for three
months.
PEASAN2T: No, I beg you! Who will take care of my children ?.
KING: I don't want to hear them anymore. Out of here!.
PEASANT: (crying) You are very cruel. Have mercy on us!
(The Soldier, the Peasant and the Peasant leave the stage)
KING: I don't know what compassion is. (He sits down. A man who looks beggar but his face is
terrifying enters the stage and stands in front of him. The King stands up) And who are you?
ANGEL OF DEATH: I am the one who destroys happiness, and the one who separates friends.
KING: Who let you in here?

ANGEL OF DEATH: I don't need anyone's permission to appear before you.

KING: I'll call my soldiers to kick you out of here! You are insolent! You must be a thief like those
who were here before you!
ANGEL OF DEATH: I am not afraid of your authority or that of anyone, nor am I afraid of your
many soldiers. And yes, you are absolutely right, I am insolent because I do not respect tyrants.
You can't escape me!
KING: (in fear) You are the Angel of Death!
ANGEL OF DEATH: Yes.
KING: Please, God, allow me to live one more day. I must apologize to all the people that I have
hurt and that I have made suffer. Give me time to return the riches and lands that I stole out of
greed so that I do not pass the anguish of judgment or the pain of punishment.
ANGEL OF DEATH: That is impossible! How should I give you a day if the days of your life and
your breaths are numbered, if your life is predetermined and registered?
KING: Then give me an hour!

ANGEL OF DEATH: The time is also in the account. It has passed while you regret your actions.
You're done with your breaths ... you only have one left.
KING: Who will be with me while I am taken to the grave?
ANGEL OF DEATH: Only your works. KING: I don't have good works!
ANGEL OF DEATH: Well then your dwelling place will be on fire, that's where the wrath of the
Almighty is.
KING: Don't take me, I beg you. Have mercy on me!.
ANGEL OF DEATH: (raises his right arm) He doesn't want to hear you anymore! (The King falls
dead to the ground) I don't know what compassion is.
