“What’s in it for me to care about foreign elections?”

The United States presidential election was held on November 3, 2020 where Joe Biden came

victorious. United States' role “can be described in general terms as consisting of four key elements:

global leadership; defense and promotion of the liberal international order; defense and promotion of

freedom, democracy, and human rights; and prevention of the emergence of regional hegemons in

Eurasia.” (O'Rourke & Moodie, 2020) Based on that description alone, news about the incoming leader of

one of the top nations can decide various things for countries that are allied and/or in conflict with them.

Our relationship with the United States has been a good one as our ties with the country is

maintained by both leaders. A lot of things can be found in both presidents, such as the attitude and type

of leadership, in which they agree to not be friendly against communists and such. As the rule of the

Republican president Trump ends and Joe Biden with the Democrats take over the US government, the

country will “will seek above all else to renew our polity at home and to rebuild America’s alliances

abroad.” (Pavel, n.d.) The differences in leadership of the current administration of the Philippines, which

I personally do not feel from President Duterte, and the leadership of the incoming president of the United

States, Joe Biden, are can be noticed because the previous president of the United States, Donald Trump,

and the President Duterte of the Philippines do have a similar feel to their leadership.

“Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the Filipino government expects no major change in

the Philippines’ relationship with the U.S., regardless of who wins the election.” (Barron et al., n.d.) Even

though this statement was released based on the relationship between the U.S. and Philippines, I

personally think that a fire of patriotism will ignite in the hearts of Filipinos that a dictator-like leadership

of Duterte can be stopped in due time, just like Trump’s unpleasant reign in the United States

government, through the presidential elections that will come in 2022.
