Motivations behind practicing sustainability and CSR activities in companies.

Fiji airports determines their sustainable growth through their company slogan which is “Cost it
before you Commit to it”. Fiji airports adopted some fundamental values or habits that in-turn
translates into a sustainable business model, when it was identified over the years that they had
an aging or obsolete terminal, pavement, and air navigation assets. The fundamental values
were as follows:

 Budgetary mindset v stretching the dollar of value - It was an approach to test every
dollar that was spent and abandon the budgetary mindset.
 Proactively driving progress – to ensure that governance procedures are always
followed so that there is no room for bureaucracy and timely decisions is made to drive
progress.
 Win/Win outcomes-revenue restructure with airport development and modernization act
which allows re-tender retail spaces. As a result, rents of their some tenancies increased
up to 10 times of what the tenants were paying previously before revenue restructure.
This approach was used to increase the company’s turnover.

According to 2019-2018 financial statements of Fiji airports, it shows that in last six years (2019-
2015) of the company, there has been a major cultural shift that has been occurred at the
forefront of their expenditure planning thought processes. Hence proven that this proactive
discipline has resulted in consistent favorable results in recent years.

Fiji airports is often adopting proactive initiatives to minimize carbon emissions, such as using
energy efficient lights, natural light, and alternative energy, mangrove and tree restoration, and
wise decision-making depending on traffic volumes and their energy use. Using our equipment
more effectively to save energy consumption. They cooperate and work at the same time.
collaborating with aviation stakeholders to promote a common vision an emphasis on the
environment. In 2017, Nadi international airport was the only airport to receive a level 1
accreditation and level 2 in 2019, the progression over last 4 years has been very important for
Fiji airports to achieve the goal of level3+ neutrality in future. Thus, in the south pacific Nadi is
the only airport to achieve level3 Airport Carbon Accreditation.
Furthermore, the corporate social responsibility (CSR) at Fiji Airports is focused on two major
concerns this are as follows:

1. Social responsibility to continue developing their network of loss-making Outer Island

Airports to provide aviation connectivity for all Fijians.

2. As a responsible corporation, they have an environmental commitment to limit carbon impact.
