Fitting of circtips 1 Concept For the purpose of this standard, internal circlips are spring retaining rings for fitting in bores (grooves). They have an ‘eccentric form and have a number of lugs of equal depth uniformly distributed around the circumference. Cirelip DIN 984 — 40 X 1,75 — A3K It is not possible to maintain closely toleranced coating thicknesses where circlips are subjected to bulk plating in a drum or bell. Reference is made to DIN 267 Part 9 with regard to the risk of hydroger-induced, delayed embrittlement in electroplated circlips. In the case of such circlips, the upper deviation for thickness s may be exceeded by an amount equal to the coating thickness. This shall be taken into consideration when dimensioning the groove. 101 DIN 984 Page 6 Testing 6.1 Materials testing Vickers hardness testing shall be as specified in DIN 50133 Part 1 Rockwell hardness testing shall be as specified in DIN 50103 Part 1. In cases of doubt, decisions should be made on the basis of the results of Vickers hardness testing. 62 Ductilty testing ‘The ductility of the circlip shall be determined as illustrated in figure 4. 39° Figure 4, Bend test ‘The circlip shall be positioned so that itis gripped at the beam section between two jaws, the edge of one of which has ‘been rounded so that the edge radius equals the circlip thickness. The circlip shall be bent through 30° over the radiused jaw by light hammer blows or by means of a lever, following which there shall be no visible sign of fracture or cracking in the circlip, The circlip shall then be further bent until fracture occurs. Determination of spiral flatness error 6.4 Permanent set and grip ‘The circlip shall be pushed five times into a cone with a diameter of 0,99 dy as illustrated in figure 16, and shall then grip, under its own mass, in a bore with a diameter equal to the maximum groove diameter, d. 65 Acceptance inspection ‘The principles of testing and acceptance as specified in DIN 267 Part 5 shall apply for acceptance inspection. Table 6 lists the characteristics (attributes) to be inspected, table 7 specifies the acceptable quality limit. Table 6. DIN 267 Part 5, April 1968 edition, clause 5, shall apply with regard to hardness testing, In the case of circlips, the hhardhness test is to be considered a destructive test. 103 DIN 984 Page 7 7 Loadbearing capacity The loadbearing capacities of the groove, Fy, and of the cirlip, Fy, shall be calculated separately, the strength of a circlip assembly being a function of the lower value of the two. Satety factors allowing for creep under static loading or for fatigue failure under oscillating stress are not included in the values clause 3 for the loadbearing capacities (Fy, Fp, Fag), but these do include a safety factor of at least two allowing for fracture understate stress. 7.1 Loadbearing capacity of groove The loadbearing capacity of the groove. Fx, specified in table 1 is based on a yield point of the material in the zone of the bore, Ret, equal to 200 N/mm? and on the nominal groove depth and edge margin, n, specified. The loadbearing capacity for differing groove depths, t’ (resulting from differing bore diameters, d, and/or differing groove diameters, da), and yield points Rx, Fy. is directly proportional to the groove depth and the yield point. If circlips are made from a different material with a differing Young's modulus £’, con- version is based on the fact that the loadbearing capacity of the circlip is directly proportional to its Young’s modulus. If the gap resulting from the chamfer is too large for the loads that are to be applied to be sustained, a supporting ring complying with DIN 988 shall be inserted to give a square edge (see figure 9). Concealed installation 9 Groove design 9.1. Groove diameter ‘The groove diameter, dz, given in clause 3 has been specified so that circlips have 8 firm grip on that diameter. ‘Note. The use of larger groove diameter up to dz max equal to d min is permissible if the assembly does not require pre loading of the circtip. 92 Groove width ‘Asa rule, tolerance zone H13 shall apply for the groove widths specitied in table 1. Where the application of load is one-sided, the grooves may be widened and/or chamfered on the opposite side. As the groove width has no influence on the loadbearing capecity of the assembly, groove forms and widths to works specifications are permitted. If the circip is intended to transmit a load alternately to both groove flanks, m shall be adapted as far as possible to the Circlip thickness, s, e.g. by introducing closer tolerances (see figure 11 to 14 for groove styles). Shape of groove ‘The normal shape of the groove is that shown in figure 11, the radius, r, on the loaded side not exceeding 0,1 s. Other common shapes of groove are illustrated in figures 12 to 14. Amendments The following amendments have been made to DIN 984, March 1965 edition and DIN 995, January 1970 edition: 2) Both standards have been combined into one standard. b) The content has been revised and harmonized with DIN 472 (see Explanatory notes) 106 Page 10 DIN 984 Explanatory notes ‘This standard supersedes the March 1965 edition and parts of DIN 995, January 1970 edition, where these refer to internal spring retaining rings with lugs. By summarizing the data in one standard and including technical delivery conditions, and guidelines regarding the fitting of cirlips, a complete and comprehensive standard has been prepared, which can be sed without reference to other standards. Re clause 2 (Clause 2 lists the quantities and symbols used in the standard Re clause 3 Clause 3 summarizes the circlip dimensions and now includes the significant design data, The dimensions and tolerances hhave been slightly corrected in some cases, without that affecting interchangeability. ‘The form and position of the groove have been toleranced at the request of the users. The specifications apply to general purpose applications of circlips, different works specifications may however be made. This applies in particular for the surface finish of the groove surface, for which generally applicable rules could not be given. ips was discussed on several occasions, a satisfactory solution Re clause ‘The materials specifications have been modified. Three materials complying with DIN 17 222 have been designated as standard. Other materials may be used subject to agreement. Re clause 5 ‘The information regarding surface finish has been supplemented and adapted to current practice. As electroplated Circlips are particularly susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement, express reference has been made to DIN 267 Part 9 for its description of the processes involved. In order to prevent later hydrogen-induced embrittlement in the case of electroplated circlips, the material, the electro- plating process and the heat treatment before and after electroplating shall be selected so as to ensure that only a litle hydrogen is absorbed in the pickling and electroplating processes and that this hydrogen is largely expelled again. As a rule, this will later prevent embrittlement. If it is necessary to prevent embrittlement with a specified statistical certainty, it is recommended that an appropriate ‘number of samples be taken and the specimens subjected to fatigue testing for 48 hours at ambient temperature; for the purposes of this test, the circlips shall be compressed to dy, Re clause 6 Clause 6 specifying methods of test necessary for an assessment of the mechanical properties and the performance of circlips has been included for the first time. The specifications given in this clause are the result of the experience gained both by manufacturers and users and assume the normal application of crclips. This also applies to acceptance inspection a specified in subclause 6.5, which is based on DIN 267 Part 5. This does not mean that different conditions may not be agreed for special cases. Re clause 7 Clause 7 includes information regarding the calculation of the loadbearing capacity of circlips and indicates how the supplementary values given in tables 1 and 2 were calculated. These values relate only to normal applications, although clause 7 does include the principles of calculating the loadbearing capacity of circlips for other applications. Re clause Clause 8 draws attention to the fact that circlips with lugs permit concealed installation. Re clause 9 Clause 9 illustrates a variety of groove designs, which also take account of the cost factor. Choice of the design shall be bated on the individual application. Re clause 10 Clause 10 recommends the use of cones when fitting circlips, this method being particularly suitable for mass production. 107
