Causes of flood

1) Heavy rains

– Unable to infiltrate the ground, resulting in a rapid increase in surface runoff.

– Water levels along the Rajang River and its tributes increases.
– Cause damage to schools, residential houses and road connecting the longhouses in
the division

2) Clogged drainage systems and culverts

The drainage system is in poor condition and is clogged with debris, preventing rainwater
from flowing away fast and efficiently and causes stagnation of water in low-lying places.
There are a few different circumstances that causes drain blockages.

i. Severe weather

– Sweeping fallen leaves, mud, and other debris into drains.

– Drains are not maintained and cleared

ii. Human actions

– Flushing non-biodegradable materials can quickly clog pipes and drains

– Flushed wet wipes are responsible for over 90% of sewage blockages.
– Drainage systems are also strained because of the disposal of leftover fat and oil down
the sink.
