EVOLUTION OF EMPLOYMENT

It would be fair enough to say that both our lives and the job market have drastically evolved
over the last 20 years. In fact, the workplace of today looks very different to the workplace of
yesteryear. The introduction of new technology, tools and the rising trend of remote working
has adapted in many ways to cater for modifications in employees’ needs and working styles.
Besides, from 1970s to 1990s, employees were more often encouraged to work independently
and stay focused at all times which is much different to the modern workplace where
collaboration is encouraged. Also, workplaces were a lot less technology-oriented where most
business communication took place over landlines, in person and all documents were hard
copies. Most importantly mobile phones were not around until 1988 and the internet was not
created until 1990. However, now times have changed, today it is more about focusing on
feeling comfortable in the workplace and remote working has also been introduced in recent
years in order to keep the staff happy and motivated because this is how there will be a positive
performance on their behalf. Another improvement that has taken place is that with the help of
internet, smart phone, online file sharing, we are able to work from anywhere which has given
a rise in remote working and cooperate with individual on the other side of the world with
ease.

Other factors related to the evolution of employment:

1. WOMEN EMANCIPATION
Throughout history, women have had a very different role in the workforce than they do
now. Empowered women entering the workforce have changed not only the types of
work that women do but have made prominent progress that has evolved the
workplace for the better. Besides, women are now entering fields that were previously
male-dominated and they are also opening doors for future generations. Consequently,
females will have more opportunities in the coming years. Earlier women did not go to
college regularly like men, in fact, they were focused on creating a stable and
comfortable life for their families. Also, without education, getting a job was not an easy
task. It is a matter of fact that earlier women were paid less than men even if they
worked in the same field, there was no recognition for the work that women used to do.
It is believed that when more women work, economies grow as women’s economic
empowerment boosts productivity, increases economic diversification and income
equality. No longer are the days when men are the workers and women are the
homemakers.
2. UNION TRADE
A trade union is an organization made up of members (a membership-based organization) and
its membership must be made up mainly of workers. One of a trade union’s main aims is to
protect and advance the interests of its members in the workplace. Therefore if we go back in
times, we can see that there was no such union for the welfare of workers. Also in the past, the
rights of employees were not protected and some were fired from their jobs with no valid
reason. However, now this has changed as trade union provides better working conditions that
did not exist in the past. In fact, trade unions are here to negotiate agreements with employers
on pay and conditions and they also provide the members with legal and financial advice. Apart
from this, trade unions provide education facilities and certain consumer benefits such as
discounted insurance. The advantage of joining a trade union is also that it provides training for
new skills and gives general advice and support. Furthermore, as the individual rights of
workers are better protected and well represented, they are more likely to be motivated and
this results in higher levels of efficiency and improved productivity.

3. QUALIFICATIONS
It is known to everyone that earlier people were not enough qualified; only those
who had access to education had greater chances to get a job. Also, workers were
not skilled enough to carry out the tasks that they were given causing problems
leading to less productivity. However, now that more people are having access to
education at different levels, it is much easier for them to get a job and now some
firms even provide training for their workers which make them efficient in the work
that they are carrying out. Also, now individuals have much better communication
skills than they used to have in the past, this factor does help in communicating with
each other. Nowadays most people are willing to learn more even when they are
working and most workers have the ability to work in peace with their co-workers.
With adequate knowledge and skills attained at different levels, workers develop
problem-solving skills and these individuals are rather ready to take on challenges
with minimal direction
