Deontology
Activity #7

When I was in grade 5, I was a group leader in our Filipino class. As group
leader, I was tasked to check my group mates assignments and to report to the class
who are those who have and do not have. Our teacher's rule is if we were not able to do
our assignment, we would have to stand at the back of the room for the rest of the
period, as a punishment. My group is always the last group to report. After checking my
group mate's assignments, I found out that my friend is the only one who did not have
one. Hearing that all four groups did their assignments, I decided to lie and cheat with
my report. I did that because I do not want my friend to get embarrassed since she is
the only one who will be punished. We were able to keep it a secret until one of our
classmates accidentally saw my friend's notebook with my check on it even without the
answer. My classmate then told my teacher about it. As a result, my teacher
reprimanded me and it even reached my adviser.

The principle of deontology talks about following the rules regardless of the result
or consequence of an action. Even if my intention is good, which is to save my friend
from the embarrassment of being punished alone, still the means or method - lying and
cheating, was not right. All forms of cheating and lying are bad, whatever the purpose is.
As a group leader, it is my duty to deliver an honest report to my teacher and the class. I
realized that even I do not want to be lied to or cheated as well. Thus, I should not do
what I do not want others to do to me.

From this activity, I realized that as a human being, we will be faced with a lot of
dilemmas which will test our decision making. We are human beings. Thus, we have
feelings and those feelings will lead us to the dilemma of which one is truly right and
truly wrong. Is doing the right thing really the right thing to do? Personally, I am still
unsure if I will genuinely follow the rules if I am again put in a difficult situation since I
always consider my feelings and others feelings in decision-making. I always want what
is best for the majority. In conclusion, I learned that we should always follow the rules.

However, as a human being, with human emotions and feelings, I also know that there
will be circumstances when I will have to break those rules.
