How To Think
Written By: Miguel Dantzler

Act: 1
Scene: 1

Description: Hunchy (Miguel Diaz) and his roommates (Kurt

Williamson and Alex Rice) are having a house party. Melody is
at the party, and Hunchy has been in love with Melody for a
very long time. Hunchy cannot gather himself to talk to
Melody. He settles for a girl named Katrina instead.

Kurt: (Him and a random girl are finishing pouring a round of

shots) Everybody gather around and grab a shot! It’s time to
get extra lit! Don’t make it a sausage party fellas! Let
these sexy ladies help themselves first! Ladies, if you need a
lemon, they are over there by Miguel. Fellas, if you need a
lemon, wine coolers are in the fridge! (Everyone laughs)

Hunchy: (Standing by Kurt) I just want you to know, that I

know, you weren't always drinking these without any lemons
until last week.

Kurt: (Looking around to see if anyone is looking/listening)

What man? Are you walking around here pissing in everybody’s
Easter basket or something? Why aren’t you over there talking
to Melody? I saw you looking at her all night.

Hunchy: Nah. I think she’s into other kinds of guys.

Kurt: You’ll never know until you try man. (Talks to the
crowd. Everybody has their shots and waiting). Before we turn
these upside down I would like to dedicate this round to all of
you beautiful ladies in here for turning this into a beautiful
night! Bottoms up! (Everyone takes their shots. One of the
girls tongue kisses Kurt immediately after she does her shot.
Alex walks up).

Alex: What’s up man. Are you going to go and talk to Melody?

Hunchy: Nah. I don’t think tonight is a good night. She’s
into other kinds of guys anyway. I think I’m going to see
what’s up with her (Points at a girl sitting down on the sofa
by herself).

Alex: The one over there on the sofa?

Hunchy: Yeah. Her.

Alex: True. Well, go over there and boss up on her big dog!

Hunchy: (Smiles) I am. (Alex walks off. Hunchy looks over at

the girl on the sofa for a few seconds before joining her on
the sofa. When he joins her on the sofa, he leaves a space in
between the two of them that looks like he may not be
conversing with her).

Hunchy: (Sits down. Giving the vibe of not being sure of

himself. She’s still polite). Hey, what’s up?

Katrina: (Smiles) Hi.

Hunchy: What’s your name?

Katrina: Katrina.

Hunchy: Nice to meet you Katrina. I’m Hunchy.

Katrina: Nice to meet you too, Hunchy. (Melody looks over at

the two talking, but Hunchy is unaware of it).

Hunchy: (A few odd seconds go by) I never seen you around

here before. Where are you hiding?

Katrina: I just moved here a couple of weeks ago. I live in

the neighborhood across the street from this one. I think I’m
starting to like it here.

Hunchy: That’s great. (Another few odd seconds go by. Kurt

walks up and sits down right next to Katrina and starts talking
to her. It looked as if Hunchy wasn’t into the girl because of
the space between them. Hunchy fumbles Katrina, and Kurt
doesn’t even know it; and Hunchy bashfully doesn’t say
anything).
Kurt: I know you’re getting tired of all these guys telling
you that you’re beautiful tonight.

Katrina: (Blushes) Thank you! Actually, you’re the only one

that has told me that tonight.

Kurt: If you were sitting on this couch when I bought it, I’d
probably offer to pay double for it.

Katrina: (Laughs/Blushes) Shut up! You’re too much!

Kurt: Honestly, you bring my couch out. Thank you.

Katrina: (Smiling) You’re welcome.

Kurt: Hey, it’s a little noisy right here and I find you very
interesting. Shall we talk somewhere quieter? (Extends his
hand and she grabs it) I want to hear you clearly. (They both
stand up and head to one of the rooms).

Kurt: (Acknowledges Hunchy as he gets up noticing him). My

man Hunchy! (Gives him a pound).

Hunchy: (Talking to himself). WE bought the couch. WE bought

the couch Kurt. Me, you, and Alex. (After a few seconds go
by, Alex and two girls walk over to Hunchy. Alex sits in a
chair, and the two girls sit on the sofa with Hunchy).

Alex: (Takes a sip of his beer and smiles at Hunchy)

Hunchy: You had seen what happened I suppose?

Alex: Yeah man. He didn’t know.

Hunchy: (Immediately answers with his head down) I know.

(One of the girls that’s on the couch kisses him on the cheek.
Her name is Mina).

Mina: You want to go to your room and talk about it?

Alex: See man, I got you! Everybody is going to have a good

night tonight!

Mina: (She grabs Hunchy’s hand as she stands up and begins to

walk him to his room. Melody sees him walking to the room with
Mina. During the narration it shows Mina and Hunchy making out
on his bed).

Narration: It seemed like I was always a day late and a dollar

short. I was going to get it right though. I promise you
that. I ain’t gonna lie. If it weren’t for my boys I’d miss
out on a whole lot of things, but everything happens for a
reason.

END OF SCENE

Act: 1
Scene: 2

Description: The boys are waking up from the party night.

Hunchy: (Wakes up and sees Katrina and Kurt playing around and
running past his door. Katrina has Hunchy’s shirt on).

Hunchy: (Looking puzzled) Is that my shirt? (Takes a few

seconds to gather himself before he gets up and walks out the
room).

Narration: I’ll never forget that particular morning for two

reasons. One, my head felt like it was trampled in a Travis
Scott concert. Two, I learned something that changed me for
the rest of my life. It surprised the hell out of me where I
learned that something from.

Alex: (Smiling at Hunchy) Rise and shine sleeping giant! Hey

Kurt, guess who’s finally up? (Laughing) You were in there
snoring your ass off man!

Hunchy: Snoring? I don’t snore. I was snoring?

Kurt: (Katrina and Kurt come walking up) Were you snoring? I
thought you were in there sleepwalking, thinking you were
cutting the grass. Alex had to go to the garage to make sure
that the lawnmower was still in there.

Hunchy: Ha Ha, Funny.

Kurt: Hey, I had to let Katrina borrow your shirt. I didn’t
think you’d mind. All of my clean shirts are in the hamper.

Katrina: I threw up on mine.

Hunchy: You know what? You can just go ahead and keep it.

Katrina: Thank you!

Hunchy: You like it?

Katrina: I like it a lot.

Hunchy: I liked it a lot too.

Kurt: (Takes money out of his wallet and places it into

Hunchy’s hand) Taken care of buddy.

Hunchy: What are we eating? I’m hungry. Who’s cooking?

Alex: I ordered breakfast like 20 minutes ago. They should be

here in a little bit.

Hunchy: Thank God. I’m starving.

Katrina: (Kisses Kurt) Hey, I’m going to go home. Call me

later okay?

Kurt: Okay, sweetheart. (Katrina leaves)

Hunchy: Sweetheart?

Alex: Sweetheart sounds kind of close doesn’t it Hunchy?

Hunchy: Not for the player of the year, Kurt Williamson.

Sweetheart kind of sounds like a pre-girlfriend.

Alex: Yeah, it does sound kind of pre-girlfriendish.

Kurt: I know it doesn’t sound like me to say this, but I like

her. We have a lot in common and she stays in the neighborhood
right across the street from this one. I have been with a lot
of girls, but when you have a connection, you have something
special. You can’t be young and dumb forever.
Hunchy/Alex: (Hunchy and Alex looks at each other startled)

Alex: (Looking worried but kidding) Did she have photos of

cats in her purse?

Hunchy: (Looking worried but kidding) Or did she get you to

participate in any kind of ritual?

Kurt: C’mon guys stop it. I know when I got a good thing.

Alex: (Breakfast delivery guy knocks at the door) There goes

the food. (Goes to get the food).

Hunchy: You know I was talking to her first right?

Kurt: Yeah, Alex told me when I got up this morning. Man, I

was drunk. I didn’t even notice. My bad.

Hunchy: Look man. If she’s what you've been looking for, then
I’m happy for you. There’s no need to apologize to me. I just
want to ask you one question though?

Kurt: What’s that?

Hunchy: What’s your formula for talking to women? I don’t

think I’ve ever seen you get shot down.

Alex: (Should be back by now with the food. As soon as he

gets back, everyone gets something to eat).

Kurt: There really isn’t a formula. It’s all about how you
think. You have to know that you already got her. Whatever
she throws at you, you can’t let it keep you from remaining
assertive with confidence. Why? Because she’s already yours.
I’m just better at it when I’m drunk.

Alex: Me too. To tell you the truth, I don’t even remember

about that until I’m drunk.

Hunchy: Hmmm. I like that. I never thought about it in that

way.

Kurt: Yeah man.

Narration: It was in that very moment, that I immediately
understood why my Pops would always tell me that the world was
mental. I looked at it as if you have to have the mental
capacity to deal with everyday drama, but what he really was
saying is that your thoughts create your reality. Kurt opened
my eyes to something that went beyond just talking to females.
Act: 1
Scene: 3

Description: Hunchy sees Melody at work. Hunchy and Alex work

together in the same section. Melody works in a separate
section from Hunchy and Alex. Hunchy speaks to Melody in the
break room.

Hunchy: I’m tired of working here man.

Alex: Aren’t we both. Nobody else is hiring right now. Where

else are we going to go?

Hunchy: You’re right.

Alex: Melody has it easy. All she has to really do is take

orders.

Hunchy: She hates her job too though, so it has to be more to

it than just taking orders.

Alex: I guess. Check it out though. I was on YouTube last

night and I saw this video of this business consultant living
the life! My man had on a Rainbow Rolex Daytona whipping a
Maserati!

Hunchy: A business consultant. What is a business consultant?

Alex: They are like professional advisors that help companies

achieve their goals. He gets paid for giving companies advice.
You know how sweet that would be giving a Fortune 500 company
advice? And getting paid for it? I wouldn’t even need a
Fortune 500 company. You can just give me a multimillionaire,
and I’d be satisfied!

Hunchy: Hell yeah! That would be tight! I’m about to take a

break, man. Hold me down, and I’ll hold you down when you go.
You know how we do it.
Alex: Of course. I got you, big dog.

Hunchy: (Leaves to go to the break room. He sees Melody in

the breakroom. He remembers about the world being mental).

Hunchy: (Speaks to himself under his breath). “It’s how you

think.” (Gathers himself to go and approach Melody, but she
sees him and speaks first).

Melody: So how’s your day going?

Hunchy: Same shit. Different day.

Melody: Yeah. That’s the usual around here.

Hunchy: Speaking of the usual around here, why don’t we get

together this weekend and do something different.

Melody: That would have been great Hunchy if it was last

weekend. Last weekend was my last weekend here. I’m moving to
Seattle. I came to the party to hang out with you, but you
were into other girls.

Hunchy: That’s funny because I wanted to hang out with you,

but it looked like you were into that guy with the hat.

Melody: You should’ve came over and talked to me, and you
would’ve found out that he was gay. And if I was into him, I
wouldn't have just let him easily whisk me away to a bedroom.

Hunchy: If I knew you were there for me, I wouldn’t have

spoken to any other girl.

Melody: I guess that’s something we’ll never know.

Hunchy: You’re right. Unfortunately. When are you leaving?

Melody: Tomorrow. I’m leaving early today.

Hunchy: I didn’t even have time to prepare you a proper

goodbye.

Melody: I planned to tell you at the party. Anyways, I have

to go back to work, Hunchy. I wish you and your boys the best.
Hunchy: I wish you the best too Melody. And I’m sorry.

Narration: I lost her. All because of my ego. My ego made the

situation seem different than what it was, and that wasn’t how
to think. If I knew I had her, then I would have had her just
like Kurt said. Something sparked inside of me immediately
after that. I realized that that way of thinking applied to
everything. I wasn’t going to lose anything else that was
meant for me. It was then, when I understood how to think.
