RECAP

We have learned that structural analysis is the process of breaking

down words to determine the word meaning. It is a powerful vocabulary tool
since knowledge of a few word parts can give you clues to the meanings of a
large number of words. We have studied about prefixes, suffixes, and root
words.

LESSON

Look at the picture. What can you say about it? (interval) Great! We can
see in the picture how a simple wood is transformed into a beautiful wooden
figure. Yes, the wooden figure is the Philippine Eagle. Amazing, isn’t it?

Block/dp/B002QKHS7U.)

This example I showed you can be compared to a very important skill a

student like you should learn. Do you know what is it? That is summarizing.

In summarizing, you should know how to simplify the text by focusing

on the important details only. Just like in sculpting, the sculptors remove
some pieces of wood or stone from what they are carving to achieve the form
they want, just like the picture I showed you earlier.

This lesson will help you understand summarizing and learn ways on
how to summarize the text you are reading.
Summarizing is simply getting the main or the central ideas of the text.
You have to know what the text is all about for you to summarize.

This lesson will help you understand summarizing through writing a

topic outline The following terms are important for our lesson:

The outline summary mimics the structure of the text being

summarized. It includes the main points and argument in the same order they
appear in the original text.

The type of outline that we will use for this lesson is the topic outline.

A topic outline arranges your ideas hierarchically (showing which are

main and which are sub-points), in the sequence you want, and shows what
you will write about. Topic outline lists words or phrases. So we say that topic
outline summarizes the main topics and subtopics of the text in words or
phrases.
Our topic outline will serve as our basis in writing our summary. Let us
check an example format of a topic outline.

I. Main Topic
A. Subtopic
B. Subtopic
1. Detail
2. Detail
a. Sub-detail
b. Sub-detail
II. Main Topic

Guided Practice
Read the text below. Complete the outline by filling in the needed details.

There are four seasons in a year. They are called winter, spring, summer
and fall. In winter it is very cold and it can snow. In spring, it is warm and it
rains often. Summer is the hottest season and you can go to the pool. In fall,
it is cool and the leaves fall on the ground.
This is the template that we are going to use for our outline summary:

I. Four Seasons
A. Winter
1._________________
B. _____________________
1. warm and rains often
C. Summer
1.__________________
D. ______________________
1. cool and the leaves fall on the ground

Let’s begin now! What is the missing detail?

I. Four Seasons
A. Winter
1. _________________

The correct answer is “very cold and can snow” . That’s why people
wear thick clothes during winter snow.
Let’s try another item!

B. _____________________
1. warm and rains often

The correct answer is “Spring”. During the spring season we can see
the flowers, plants and trees bloom beautifully.
Let’s answer this item!

C. Summer
1._________________

The “hottest season” is the answer. Filipinos love the summer season.
We all like visiting beaches during this time.
Let’s try the last one!

D.______________________
1. cool and the leaves fall on the ground

We are looking for the word “Fall”. The fall season is also called as the
autumn season.

Let’s see the complete outline!

I. Four Seasons
A. Winter
1. very cold and snows
B. Spring
1. warm and rains often
C. Summer
1. hottest season
D. Fall
1. cool and the leaves fall down

Now, let’s try to make a summary out of the outline.

The four seasons that we have are winter, spring, summer and fall. The
winter season is very cold and has snows. In Spring season, it is warm and it
rains often. Summer is the hottest season. During the fall season, it is cool
and the leaves are falling on the ground

VALUING

Here is today’s thought to ponder:

“As a general rule, the most successful man in life is the man who
has the best information.” -Benjamin Disraeli
Let’s learn not to limit ourselves. Life has so many things to offer. We
have to explore the world. As we gather more information, we are getting
smarter. Let’s use our new learnings to improve ourselves. Inform
yourselves with new ideas and make sure that this process never stops.

POSTTEST

Directions: Read the text below. Complete the outline by filling in the needed
details. Write a summary based on the topic outline that you made.

Patriotism means loving your country. You can be patriotic by doing

things to help your country be better, like getting a job that lets you help
lots of people or fix big problems. It is also patriotic to join the military and
protect people. You can also hang a flag at your house during holidays like
Flag Day to show your patriotism.
