It is the Disruption of the ability to control the motor programming involved in an activity such as the
articulation of speech. People with apraxia of speech find it challenging to talk and
express themselves through speech.

Explanation: Apraxia of speech (AOS) is a motor speech disorder that can occur in the absence of
aphasia or dysarthria. AOS as a disorder of speech motor programming is discussed against the
background of theories from experimental psychology. Apraxia is caused by a defect in the
brain pathways that contain memory of learned patterns of movement. The lesion may be the
result of certain metabolic, neurological or other disorders that involve the brain, particularly the
frontal lobe (inferior parietal lobule) of the left hemisphere of the brain. There is little data
available on the incidence of apraxia. Since apraxia may accompany dementia or stroke, it is
more frequently diagnosed among older persons.

Apraxia can also be a genetic disorder. If an infant has apraxia at birth, it may
be due to problems involving the central nervous system.
