race and shim from transaxle case. Using driver, replace race in transaxle case without shim. Install
differential assembly into transaxle case. Install clutch housing and tighten bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 N.m).
2. Rotate differential to seat bearing. Mount dial indicator on clutch housing side to measure thrust
clearance. See Fig. 15 . Insert appropriate tool into transaxle housing end of differential and move
assembly up and down. Measure thrust clearance and record. Shim thickness for RN4F31A and RS5F31A
models, is determined by adding .08-.010" (.20-.25 mm) to thrust clearance measurement.
3. On RS5F32A and RS5F32V models, shim thickness is determined by adding .010-.012" (.25-.30 mm) to
thrust clearance measurement. Select correct shim. Use combination of 2 shims if necessary. On
RN4F31A and RS5F31A models, shims are available in .04 mm increments. Shims range in thickness
from .017" (.44 mm) to .035" (.88 mm). Part numbers are 38454-M8000 through 38454-M8011.
4. On RS5F32A and RS5F32V models, shims are available in .04 mm increments. Shims range in thickness
from .011" (.28 mm) to .038" (.96 mm). Part numbers are 31439-31X00 through 31439-31X17. One shim
is available with a thickness of .057" (1.44 mm). Part number is 31439-31X18.

differential turning torque (bearing preload). See Fig. 17 . On RN4F31A and RS5F31A models, turning
torque should be 35-69 INCH lbs. (3.9-7.8 N.m) for new bearings. Turning torque for used bearings is 26-
52 INCH lbs. (2.9-5.9 N.m).
7. On RS5F32A and RS5F32V models, turning torque should be 26-61 INCH lbs. (2.9-6.9 N.m) for new
bearings. Turning torque for used bearings is 20-46 INCH lbs. (2.3-5.2 N.m). On all models, if turning
torque is incorrect, remove transaxle case side bearing outer race and select a NEW adjusting shim.
Preload will change about 3-4 INCH lbs. (.3-.4 N.m) with each shim thickness.
8. Rotate torque wrench one complete revolution. Turning torque should not increase more than 8.7 INCH
lbs. (1.0 N.m). If measurement increases more than specification or binding is felt, inspect bearings for
possible damage.
1. Mainshaft bearing preload is adjusted by thickness of shim under transaxle case cover. Install mainshaft
into clutch housing. Ensure differential assembly is installed. Install transaxle case and tighten bolts to 22
INCH lbs. (30 N.m). Using Differential Turning Tool (KV38105900), rotate differential assembly to
ensure mainshaft bearings are properly seated. Remove case cover, "O" ring, spacer and adjusting shim.
2. Using depth micrometer, measure distance from transaxle case to bearing outer race. If distance measured
is .093-.094" (2.35-2.40 mm), required shim thickness is .004" (.10 mm). For each increase of .002" (.05
mm) in depth, shim thickness will increase equal amount to a maximum of .128-.129" (3.25-3.30 mm) in
depth. Shims are available in .05 mm increments. Shims range in thickness from .004" (.10 mm)
to .039" (1.00 mm). Part numbers are 32137-M8000 through 32137-M8018.
3. Install selected shim, spacer and cover. Tighten cover to 70 INCH lbs. (7.9 N.m). Using Differential
Turning Tool (KV38105900), rotate differential assembly and measure total turning torque (total
preload). See Fig. 17 . Total turning torque should be 35-122 INCH lbs. (3.9-13.7 N.m).
1. Mainshaft bearing thrust clearance is adjusted by thickness of transaxle case cover. Install mainshaft into
clutch housing. Ensure differential assembly is installed. Install transaxle case and tighten bolts to 22
INCH lbs. (30 N.m). Using Differential Turning Tool (KV38105900), rotate differential assembly to
ensure mainshaft bearings are properly seated. Remove case cover and "O" ring.
2. Using depth micrometer, measure distance from transmission case to mainshaft bearing. See Fig. 18 .
Mainshaft thrust clearance is calculated by subtracting .004" (.10 mm) from depth measurement. Select
matching thickness case cover. Case covers are available in .05mm increments. Covers range in thickness
from .424" (10.78 mm) to .434" (11.03 mm). Part numbers are 32131-50J00 through 32131-50J05.
Inspection
1. Install shift rod, shift lever, interlock and control assembly. Ensure mounting hole protrusion on control
bracket is properly installed in mounting hole. Measure maximum height of 1st/2nd shifter (height "H")
when shifting from Neutral to Reverse position. See Fig. 20 and Fig. 21 . Maximum height should be
2.653-2.672" (67.38-67.86 mm).
