DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Hitachi generator contains internal IC regulator. See Fig. 4. Battery voltage is supplied at all times to
"S" (voltage sense) terminal on generator through appropriate fuse, located in underhood fusible link box. See
WIRING DIAGRAMS. Generator output through "B" terminal provides power to recharge battery and run
accessories. Charging system is protected through a fusible link, located in underhood fusible link box.

(1) Deflection is with 22 lbs. (10 kg) pressure applied midway on the longest belt run. Specifications are
for used belts. Run new belts at least 10 minutes and recheck deflection.

SYSTEM CHECK
NOTE: After starting engine, wait at least 30 seconds before measuring voltage.

Terminals "B", "E", "L" and "S" are marked on the generator's rear cover.
1. Ensure generator wire harness connections are secure, drive belt tension is okay and battery is fully
charged. Turn ignition on. If CHARGE light on instrument panel illuminates, go to step 3. If CHARGE
light does not illuminate, go to next step.
2. Disconnect generator connector (terminals "L" and "S"). Using a fused jumper wire, ground harness side
of terminal "L". If CHARGE light illuminates, replace faulty IC regulator. If CHARGE light remains off,
check for faulty light bulb or fuse. Replace as necessary. Reconnect generator connector and retest.
3. Start engine and allow it to idle. If CHARGE light is off, generator and regulator are operating properly at
this time. If CHARGE light is illuminated, check drive belt tension, connections at "B", "L" and "S"
terminals, and fuse for "S" terminal. Repair as necessary. If CHARGE light remains illuminated, go to
next step.
4. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and terminal "B" with engine running at 1500 RPM. If
reading is greater than 15.5 volts, replace IC regulator. If reading is battery voltage or less, field circuit is
open. Repair as necessary. Ensure generator output amperage is within specifications. See
GENERATOR MINIMUM OUTPUT AMPERAGE SPECIFICATIONS table.

BENCH TESTING
ROTOR
Using a DVOM, measure resistance between rotor slip rings. Resistance should be 2-3 ohms. Check for
continuity between rotor core and any rotor slip ring. Continuity should not be present. Replace rotor assembly
if resistance and continuity checks are not as specified. Ensure minimum slip ring outer diameter is within
specification. See MINIMUM SLIP RING OUTER DIAMETER SPECIFICATIONS table.

STATOR
Using DVOM, check for continuity between stator core leads. Replace stator if continuity is not present.
Connect one DVOM lead to stator core. Connect remaining DVOM lead, in turn, to each stator lead. Replace

stator if continuity is present.
NOTE: To test stator or diodes, separate them by unsoldering connecting wires. Use
just enough heat to melt solder. Excess heat will damage diodes.
DIODES
Unsolder diodes from stator terminals. Using DVOM, check continuity of all diodes in both directions. Ensure
continuity is present in one direction only. See Fig. 1. If continuity is present in both directions, diode is
shorted. If continuity is not present in either direction, diode is open. If any diode is faulty, replace entire diode
assembly.

BRUSHES
Inspect brushes for free movement in holder. Clean brush holder if necessary. Check brushes for cracks and
wear. Check brush springs for corrosion or damage. Ensure brushes are not worn beyond minimum length.
Minimum brush length is .236" (6.0 mm). Replace brushes if not within specification.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

ALTERNATOR
REMOVAL
1. Remove engine undercover RH.

2. Remove side inspection cover RH.
3. Loosen belt idler pulley.
4. Remove drive belt.
5. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts (four).
6. Remove cooling fan and fan shroud.
7. Slide A/C compressor forward.
8. Disconnect alternator harness connector.
9. Remove alternator upper bolt and lower bolt.

INSTALLATION
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
