. Transform Exponential functions

Values: Optimism
Activating Prior Knowledge: (3 – 5 minutes)

I Essential Ideas: ( 5 – 15 minutes)

Definition:
An exponential function with base b is a function of the form f(x) = bx or y = bx
Where b > 0, b ≠ 1

Definition:
Let b be a positive number not equal to 1. A Transformation of an exponential function
with base b is a function of the form
g(x) = a . bx – c + d
where : a , c and d are real numbers
There are many application of exponential functions. Some of the most common applications in
real- life of exponential functions and their transformations are, population growth,
exponential decay and compound interest.

II Learning Experiences:
A. CLARIFYING UNDERSTANDING:
Directions: Perform the indicated activity below and follow the procedure. This activity
will help you introduce the concept of an exponential function:

Materials: One 2- meter string and scissors

STEPS:
a. In step 0, there is 1 string
b. At step 1, fold the string into two equal parts and then cut at the middle. How
many strings of equal length do you have? Enter your answer in the table below.
c. At step 2, again fold each of the strings equally and then cut. How many strings
of equal length do you have? Enter your answer in the table below.
d. Continue the process until the table is completely filled – up
Steps 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Number of Strings 1

a. What pattern did you observed from the data?

b. Can you define or give a formula for the number of strings as a function
of the step number?
Example:
Direction: Determine whether the given function represented by its equation is an
exponential function or not.
a y = 8x exponential function, where b =8 with exponent of x
b y = 53x exponential function, where b = 5 with exponent 3x
c y = x8 not exponential function since the exponent is a fixed value
d y = (-4)x not exponential function because a = -4 is greater than 0

B Processing Question: ( 5 minutes)

1. How do you determine if the given function is exponential or not?

2 Can the base of the given exponential function be a negative sign? Why or why not?

C Mastery:
Direction: Determine whether the given function represented by its equation is an
exponential function or not.
____________1. y = 5x – 2
____________2. y = 225x + 6
____________3. y = 4x2
____________4. y = -10x – 1
____________5. Y = -3xx – 11

Exercises:
Direction: Determine whether the given function represented by its function is an
exponential function or not.
a. y = 32x + 1 b. y = 24x + 1 c. y = 2x5

d y = x2 e. y = -10x + 1

Example:
1. If f(x) = 3x, evaluate f(2), f(-2), f(1/2), f(0.4), f(π)Type equation here .
Solution:
a. f(x) = 3x @ f(2) c. f(x) = 3x @ f(1/2)
= 32
= 9 = 31 /2
b. f(x) = 3x @ f(-2) from the law of exponents
-2
= 3
you cannot perform for f(x) = √ 3
any negative exponents
3 is a whole number understood has d. f(x) = 3x @ f(0.4)
0.4
a denominator of 1, then take the f(x) = 3 0.4 convert to fraction
reciprocal of it to make the exponent = 32 /5 3 is the base and is the index
positive, it becomes f(x) = √5 32 = √5 9
1 1
f(x) = 2 =
3 9
e f(x) = 3π since π is a rational number,
the rules for rational exponents are not
applicable.
