2. Baguio city, with its small land area is very congested these days considering the registered
vehicles are 4 times more than the city’s capacity. What engineering intervention can you possibly
propose to address this issue. Explain and elaborate your answer.

In order to address this problem my possible proposal is to add adequate parking areas to
avoid clogging of roads by parked vehicles. This parking areas should be able to
decongest roads. Another one is to construct additional fly overs in order to split vehicles
that can merge traffic. Due to the limited land area of Baguio fly overs are more essential
to be built for it helps consume less land area.

IT’S YOUR TURN

1. In road construction, why is planning important?

In road construction planning is important because it ensures a binding contract between
an engineer and the owner that is very important when there are problems during
construction. It also ensures that before construction all materials and design is set to
standard measures.
2. Bellow is a portion of a bridge that collapsed during a heavy downpour last August 19.
Disregarding the issues on use of substandard materials and possible corruption, what could have
caused the failure?
The possible cause of the failure is the eruption of land on the base of the bridge’s post
due to must moisture and heavy water flow. Another one is that it could be possibly
caused by strong water current due to heavy downpour. Strong water current could always
weaken a solid structures strength that could cause it to fail.
