event held at Block Island on July 16, 17 and

starts smiling, and then giggling, and then laughing hys-

must be too embarrassed to talk about it. For those of

L ittle Jack Thornton called his grandfather “Poppa.” Poppa was a Navy man (notice the cap) and proud of his
Island Packet Patuxent (38-108). As a navy man he was able to keep his yacht near its namesake, and he
moored her just north of the Patuxent Naval Air Station. Alan Thornton, Poppa’s real name, was USNA class
of 1967.
“He and his wife took some interesting trips on their IP38, twice to the Bahamas and once to Key West. He had his
Coast Guard Captain’s license and Ham radio license. We were fortunate to spend some time with them at these
destinations. His dream was to do an around the world trip and he had spent a lot of time looking at different boats
before choosing the IP38. Unfortunately this story does not have a happy ending. Alan passed away a few weeks
ago after a 3+ year battle with pancreatic cancer.
“Be thankful for the time you are afforded in this life, and spend it doing what you love. Life is too short to put
off the important and enjoyable things. When you are having one of those ‘what the heck are we doing here days’,
think about a grandpa and one of his grandchildren, and every one else that your product has made really, really
happy, and be proud of what you do. Thanks for some really great days, for us and the rest of the family.”
