HI everybody, its me

again JI Butuyan, Jaz.

I’ll be demonstrating
the proper injection of
vaccines
intramuscularly,
subcutaneously and
intradermally. So let'I
Start!
INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTION
IM injection goes straight to the muscle, with
the needle in the 90 degrees angle
When the child and caregiver
comes, ask if they have any
questions.
Explain about the procedure and
the type of vaccine thats going
to be given to the child, talk
about what are the benefits and
the possible side effects on the
injection site. position the child
by putting them on the
caregiver's lap
Wash hands and prepare a clean table to work on. prepare the
vaccines keep them away from the child
since seeing the materials make the child feel anxious.
Once the vaccines have been prepared, keep them close at hand
and in the order you will be administering them

Let the caregivers know that holding the child properly will help
calm and still the child which will make the immunization go
more smoothly.
Position the child preparing the the upper outer part of the
thigh. This muscle (the vastus lateralis) is large and safe for IM
injection.
Deltoid muscle can be used for older children and adolescents
but this is not safe for children less than 15 months

when 3 IM injections are scheduled at the same day in an infant

under 12 months of age, give PCV and IPV in one thigh
separated by 2.5 cm and the pentavalent in the other thigh

Find the location for the injection, clean it with a sterile water
not alcohol only if its dirty since swabbing clean skin is not
necessary.

Gently stretch and support the skin between the thumb and
forefinger with one hand, whilst the other hand, hold the syringe
barrel with fingers and thumb on the sides of the barrel of the
bevel, mainly the hole of the needle should be facing upwards.

Quickly and smoothly push the entire needle into the skin in a
90 degree angle down thru the skin and into the muscle.
Depress the plunger smoothly with your thumb

Take care not to move the needle under the skin. pull the needle
quickly and smoothly at at the same angle it went in.
The caregiver may hold a clean swab gently over the site if its
bleeding.
Do not rub or massage the area.
Soothe and distract the infant
Carefully dispose the needle and syringe in a hazard bin

SUBCUTANEOUS INJECTION
push the needle into the skin at 45 angle

INTRADERMAL INJECTION
Intradermal is given at the layer almost flat along the infant's
skin,
gently insert the needle into the top layer of the skin just below
the bevel
press slowly, you should feel resistance, if no, the injection may
be too deep and stop injecting immediately
Then reinsert the needle at a correct position and inject the
remaining dose. do not repeat the dose.
If the dose is delivered correctly, swelling should appear on the
injection site.
