(Sudario & Lipardo, August 2021)

SUMMARY
As people live longer, the issue of enhancing their overall
health and function becomes more important and socially
meaningful. The demand for good health care in this rising
population will rise correspondingly as a result of this
expected growth. The researchers chose to focus on
institution-based older persons in Leyte, Philippines,
because they have a higher rate of functional mobility
and cognitive decline than community-dwelling older
adults.
SUMMARY
There are currently no official studies in Leyte that
present the current level of functional mobility and
cognition of older persons who are institutionalized. In the
absence of such statistics, determining whether nursing
home programs are genuinely sufficient to ensure that
older individuals in home care are reaching their maximal
functional dependency potential is difficult.
OBJECTIVE
The goal of this study was to explore the
prevalence of cognitive impairment, prevalent
functional issues, and the relationship between
functional mobility and cognition in institutionalized
older people.
A descriptive-correlational design was utilized methods
in this study. Thirty (30) participants of the
three nursing homes were chosen to
participate in this study through the use of
purposive sampling. The Montreal Cognitive
Assessment (MoCA) was used to evaluate
cognition. Timed-up and Go Test (TUG) and 10
Meter Walk Test (10MWT) were used to
measure functional mobility.
The frequency of cognitive impairment was
substantial (90%) among the participants,
according to the findings. In this investigation,
the severity of cognitive impairment was not
established. Some of the individuals, however,
are thought to be suffering from dementia.
Participants in this study were found to have a
sedentary lifestyle. This could have played a
role in the subjects' poor cognitive abilities.
Men, on the other hand, were shown to have
higher cognitive impairment than women.
results
In this study, women spend more time in
nursing homes with close friends, giving them
more time to participate in social
interactions than men. Older adults who have
spent more time in nursing facilities are more
accustomed to their surroundings, which
may affect their personality and well-being.
Older adults who are emotionally stable are
more proactive and participatory in
activities, which has been linked to improved
cognition. results
In older persons, a low BMI may contribute
to cognitive impairment.
Furthermore, impaired balance and gait
were identified as functional issues in this
study, implying that they have difficulties
performing daily activities and are at a
greater risk of falling. In regression analysis,
persons with more disorders had a higher
probability of having poor cognitive
performance.
results
Sedentary or immobile lifestyles were
seen, as well as medical comorbidities
that could be linked to impaired physical
function. Falling and severe cognitive
impairment were predicted by poor
performance on both functional mobility
and cognitive assessments.

results
As a result of this research, it
appears that exercises that
improve both physical and cognitive
performance should be a regular
element of nursing home activities.

results
The research article suggests that,
in order to address their mobility
and cognitive issues, home care
facilities should have additional
health care employees who can
provide specialized or more
focused care and attention to
institution-based adults in Leyte.

REACTION
Functional capacity is linked to physical and mental health and
is a crucial aspect in defining an individual's quality of life, on
the other hand, everyday and social behavior are both
influenced by cognitive function. Given the data and statistics
presented in this research article, it is critical for health care
professionals in nursing homes to be aware of the issues
confronting the elderly, particularly those who are
institutionalized and are unable to perform daily activities
independently and require assistance from others.
REACTION
Furthermore, aside from having the opportunity to live a higher
quality of life, it was revealed in the study how social interaction
presented important health benefits for our older adults, it can lower
the risk of acquiring cognitive impairments. I have also found out that
emotional stability is key to increased participation of older adults to
activities held in the facility, which also helps them in maintaining their
cognitive stability. It is therefore important for nurses and other
healthcare professionals to develop activities that are engaging and
interesting for older adults in order to encourage active
participation.
R E A C T I O N
As a student nurse and a future health professional, the results
presented in this research can help me in designing activities that
can help them become physically active and more positive about
themselves. It can also help me in providing a safe environment for
my patients to assist them with their mobility problems and to aid
them in performing activities of daily living (ADLs) with minimal
dependence and need for supervision. And lastly, this can serve as
my guide in developing a plan-of-care that can fit to the needs of
my elderly patients, placing importance on the maintenance of their
functional and cognitive ability.
THankyou!
