The sexual health of gay men belongs to us. Not to drug companies, who want us to tak.e expensive medication instead of taking precautions, so that they can make another billion dollars .. It does not belong to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which is under orders to do HIV prevention, "without promoting homosexuality •. " It does not belong to the academics.

We ourselves have to reinvent HIV prevention in a new generation's image for our own benefit.

If we are going to protect. our community's health, it is going to have to come from us.

The drug company Gilead wants us to take a $10.,OOO-per-year pill (Truvada) to prevent HIV, even though their study showed it was only 44% effective under optimal circumstances. The CDC wants us to believe that collecting a group of men ina room for a few sessions of "sharing" is going to have a permanent benefft, Academics write endless papers that have nothing to do with the real world.

Gay men have unsafe sex for a variety of reasons. They love a man and think that having unprotected sex is the best way of showing it. They are too drunk or stoned. There Is no condom around. Or, they don't think that their life Is Important enough to protect.

In the '80s and '90s, safer sex was almost universal. We were so freaked out by watching our friends get sick and die we wouldn't take the chance

of getting infected.

So, where are we today? About half of all new infections in the U.S., some 28,000, come from men who have sex with men. More than half of those come from men who are unaware they are infected. So, with half a million men who know they are HIV-positive, only about 12,000 actual new infections

happen each year from a man infecting another man. That is too many, but it indicates that most gay men are taking precautions most of the time.

We need a grassroots movement led by young gay men. We need an individual commitment to protect ourselves and our partners. We need to get as close to the heat of the moment-When people are actually making these decisions-as we can get.

So when a drug company tells you that prevention has failed and a pill will protect you, hold on to your

wallet. When the CDC tries to prevent sexually transmitted disease without speaking frankly about sex, ignore them.

U.K. rugby star Ben Cohen comes to Atlanta for 'Acceptance Tour' as Atlanta Braves struggle with coach's anti-qav slurs

By Dyana Bagby dbagby@rhegavoice.com

Ben Cohen is a ruggedly handsome man who is not afraid to pose shirtless - thrilling many gay men around the world who may not know anything about rugby, but do admire a beautiful body.

Cohen, a UK rugby champion who is straight, married and has twin daughters, said he has no qualms with being a "gay icon."

"That's fine by me," he said in a telephone interview from his home in Northamptcnshire, England.

But Cohen wants to use his notoriety in a way other professional athletes have not. His main cause off the pitch is helping LGBT youth, as well as eliminating homophobia from athletics.

"I've never seen a straight athlete do this be" fore. I'm really passionate about this," he said.

Cohen's "Acceptance Tour 2011" makes its first stop in the U.S. in Atlanta next week. Several fundraising events are planned May 19-22 with proceeds going in part to the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network.

Cohen, who is a special guest presenter at the GLAAD Media Awards on May 14 in San Francisco, is also forming the StandUp Foundation to work to stop bullying.

"I have a big following, I have a voice, 1 want to use it," he said. "I'm in a privileged position and I want to set a precedent. Being gay is not a disease, it's not a choice."

Cohen said he did not know his popularity among gay men until a French fan set up a Facebook page for him several years ago. Then Cohen started receivingsrnails from gay young people seeking advice and help.

"They don't have family they can talk to.

I wanted to take a stand and say you are not isolated," he said. "1 have two kids of my own an d the last thing I want to think a bout is them feeling alone."

The Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club is bringing Cohen to Atlanta. While there is no denying Cohen is a good-looking man, Gary Durden, president of the Bucks, said the IUgby star's message is more important than treating him like "a piece of meat."

"T hope the message is not because he is a good looking guy. He deserves us to show the

The lest bastion?

Professional sports may be among the last bastions where homophobia is still prevalent - accepted by athletes and coaches who make millions of dollars from salaries, ticket sales and endorsements.

But, perhaps, the times are changing.

After Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant was seen on national TV shouting "fucking faggot" at a referee during an intense game against the San Antonio Spurs on April 12, the National Basketball Association fined him $100,000.

McDowell shouted anti-gay slurs at San Francisco Giants fans on April 23 at San Francisco AT&T Park, he was put on administrative leave for two weeks without pay, ordered to take sellsi tivi ty training and also fined an undisclosed amount of money by Major League Baseball.

MLB Commissioner Bud Selig released a statement on the McDowell incident, making it clear in no uncertain terms that the alleged behavior was unacceptable.

"Major League Baseball is a social institution that brings people together and welcomes all individuals of different races, religions, genders, national origi ns and sexua I ori e ntati ons into its ballparks. Conduct by people associated with MLB that shows insensitivity to others simply cannot and will not be tolerated," Selig said

National gay groups such as the Human Rights Campaign and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation called for the professional sports leagues in the Bryant and McDowell instances to take action - and they were heard. Bryant spoke on the phone with HRC President Joe Solmonese to personally apologize for his action.

Georgia Equality also called on the Atlanta Braves to take local action. The LGBT advocacy group sent a letter April 28 to Braves President John Sdiuerholz asking for three things: Firm disciplinary action, reappraisal 0 f sensitivity training for all employees of the club and for the Braves to work to help prevent bullying in schools.

Gay leaders are particularly upset because this is not the first time tile Braves have been accused of anti-gay comments or actions.

In 1999, then-Braves pitcher John Rocker was quoted in a Sports Illustrated profile explaining why he would never play in New York. Rockel noted that he would have to ride the subway and sit next to "some queer with AIDS," among others. Rocker was suspended 14 days after an arbitrator cut the original suspension in half. His $20,000 fine was also slashed to $500.

In 2004, another Braves pitcher at the time, John Smeltz, compared gay marriage to bestiality in an AP story about gay athletes. ''What's next? Marrying an animal?" Smoltz asked.

In 2006, the Atlanta Braves also angered the LGBT community when the team sponsored the first "Faith Day" in Major League Baseball. At the game, Focus on the Family representatives handed out pamphlets for the group's Troubledwith.com website, which features anti-gay content, including stating homosexuality is a developmental problem and comparing gay people to pedophiles,

In response to the backlash from gay fans, the Braves disinvited Focus on the Family from participating in future Faith Day events.

"Beyond individual punishments, the Braves need to take a moment to look at themselves and consider what team culture they want to engender," said in a p-ress release demanding local action.

"What is the face they want to reflect to themselves and to their community? Wherl" is

the local action stemming from the team that started this fi restorm?"

Braves president to meet with gay group

Georgia Equality Executive Director Jeff Graham told the GA Voice May 10 that he has received an invitation from the Braves to meet with Schuerholz next week, indicating the team is at least mterested in hearing what LGBT acti vists have to say.

TIle Braves did not return calls from the GA Voice seeking comment about the meeting or about McDowell.

Jeff Schultz, sports columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, covered tile McDowell incident extensively and wrote in a column the coach was "lucky" to get only a two-week suspension. Schultz told the GA Voice in an email interview that homophobia in sports is still very much part of the game.

"How often do you see male athletes come Out and admit they are gay during their careers? Answer: Never," Schultz said.

"They know they never will be fully accepted by teammates in the locker room. Consequently, coaches don't want to coach gay athletes and general managers or owners of teams don't want to sign them," he said.

"This doesn't necessarily mean they are anti-gay themselves. But they're in the 'winning' business, and if they believe having an openly gay athlete in the locker room is going to disrupt team chemistry and diminish their chance for success, it's a road they would rather not go down," he said. "That's understandable to a degree. But obviously this situation allows homophobia to exist"

Public outcrj, media changing rules of game?

Last week, New York Rangers hockey player Sean Avery came out in support of gay marriage as part of the Human Rights Campaign's campaign for marriage equality in New York. He is believed to be the first New York professional athlete to come out publicly in support of gay marriage.

"I treat everyone the way I expect 10 be treated, and that applies to marriage," Avery says in the video made for HRC.

But Avery's vocal support of gay marriage was met with hostility from Uptown Sports Management's Todd Reynolds, player a_gent,who represents several pro hockey players. Reynolds took 10 Twitter on May 9 to voice his displeasure with Avery, staring, ''Very sad to read Sean Avery's rnisguided support of same-gender 'marnags.' Legal or not, it will always be wrong."

Uptown Hockey's tweet garnered much attention in the rapid-firing Twitterverse and Reynolds had to back up a few steps.

Two hours after that first tweet, Reynolds tweeted, "To clarify, This is not hatred or bigotry towards gays. It is not intolerance in any shape or form. I believe we ar-e all equal ... " followed by this tweet, ''But I believe the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman. This is my

personal viewpoint. I do not hate anyone."

Schultz of the AlC said the recent examples of swift punishment of professional athletes could be credited in pan to public outrage fueled by the "rocket ship" of today's media.

"These days, something can be said in a weekly throw-away newspaper in North Dakota or a small blog site and it's going to spread like wildfire the second somebody tweets about it on Twitter; The information age has gone from wagon train to rocket ship," Schultz said.

"Once it's out there, sports leagues and teams have to react. Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and other past baseball heroes who were quasi-degenerates in their personal lives never would've made it today," he added.

Cohen spoke out publicly against Bryant's anti-gay foul and feels professional athletes, have to be responsible for their actions.

"He has a role to play, that's what makes a sportsman great," Cohen said. "He took his eye off the ban."

For Durden, the comments from Bryant and McDowell "show where their mindset is."

"I'm a huge Braves fan and r think McDowell should have been fired," Durden said. "If any Joe-blow had said this at his job, he would have been fired. I'm not going to boycott the Braves, but there is some sort of free pass they get as sports figures. [McDowell] took locker room humor to the grandstands and he should've known better."

Openly gay professional athletes exist, but in the U.S. they have come out after they retired. Examples include Olympic gold medal diver Greg Louganis, NBA player John Amaechi and NFL player Esera Tuaolo.

However, Matthew Mitcham of Australia won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics as an openly gay man - an historic moment in sports.

Durden said he hopes one day being a gay athlete is not fodder for hate.

"That's Ben's goal - to help gay guys come out in professional sports," Durden said. "I think we will Sl"e someone do so in the next 10 years or sooner. The strides we make now will make it a lot easier for an athlete to get past that barrier."

Four people - two dressed in cow costumes wearing sandwich boards that read ''Moor equality" and "What's your beef wif gay people?" - showed up at the comer of Centennial Park across from CNN on May 6 to protest the Chickfil-A Leadercast taking place at the nearby Georgia World Congress Center.

While the protest was scheduled from noon to 3 p.m., it ended at 1 p.m. because organizers had to return to work.

The small group of Queer Justice League and GetEQUAL GA supporters handed out "coupons" to passersby stating, "Reserve your free Bigot-tilA Deluxe" with a list of some of the Atlanta-based fast-food restaurant's anti-gay donations, including $1,000 to the Family Research Council, $5,000 to the Alliance Defense Fund and $15,000 to Serving Mar-

Paul Schappaugh of GetEQUAL GA acknowledged attendance was low but said the idea of the protest was to raise awareness about Chick-fil-A's opposition to LGBT equality.

Other protests of Chick-fil-A were taking place across the country by other GetEQUAL groups, he added.

Schappaugh said plans were to contact Coca-Cola's CEO and board chair Muhtar Kent, one of the Leadercast's "Voices of Service" speakers. Coca-Cola has scored 100 percent on the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index for its dedication to LGBT employees and his participation on the conference was "disappointing," Schappaugh said.

Delta Air Lines, a sponsor of the Leadercast Conference, has also scored 100 percent of the CEL Schappaugh said he planned to contact executives with the Atlanta-based airline to point out supporting Chick-fil-A's conference went against their stated principals on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues,

College president notes school's founders were female couple

hosts historic summit on black LG T students

ByAnare V. Holmes

Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, president of Spelman College, jump-started the Andre Lords Historically Black Colleges & Universities Summit with a compelling bit of trivia.

"As we celebrate our 130th anniversary and founding by two women who lived, themselves, in life-long partnership, it seems appropriate that [Spelman] should be a leader in creating more inclusive environments for our LGBT students," Tatum said.

That public acknowledgement that Sophia Packar-d and Harriett Giles, co-organizers of the acclaimed all women's college, lived as domestic partners set the stage to explore the complex relationships LGBT people share in both attending and working for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

Fast forward in time and it is clear how highly publicized incidents like the 2002 beating of a Morehouse student allegedly motivated by homophobia, combined with greater media attention surrounding suicide-related deaths among LGBT youth, have sparked much needed dialogue regarding issues of gender and sexuality at HBCU campuses.

Such reflection on Spelman's campus led to the Audre Lor-de HECU Summit, held Friday, April 29. The event culminated a threeyear study funded by the Arcus Foundation to

ina-ease awarenes and understanding about African-American gay and lesbian experiences at HBCU campuses.

Named after world-renowned scholar, author and feminist Audre Lorde, who was me first black openly lesbian woman to speak at Spelman College, the summit is actually a byproduct of work done to digitize her coLlection of papers the school owns and houses.

The comprehensive scholarship uncovered best practices and strategies participating schools can implement to facilitate institutional change in serving the needs of their LGBT students and sta ff.

"Hopefully this work will help us move away from a 'don't ask, don't tell' mindset that is now passe and detrimental to our instirutional health and well-being," said Dr. Beverly Guy Sheftall, one of the masterminds behind the groundbreaking summit and scholarship that resulted in a 341-page Summit Resource Book and report.

Sheftall, founding director of the Spelman Women's Research &Resource Center, scholar M. Jacqui Alexander and other researchers drafted the set of recommendations that are both practical and ambitious in helping participating schools address LGBT students, facu lty and staff.

Solutions include the creation of Women's Studies programs and majors on HBCU campuses, establishing LGBT affinity groups, extending domestic partner benefits to faculty and staff, and conducting public safety training and staff development around issues of gender, sexuality and hate crimes.

Bennett College for Women, Morehouse College, Philander Smith College, Howard University, Clark Atlanta, Dillard, Fisk, North Caroline Central and Morgan State universities.

"The Audre Lorde HECU Summit and research project enables us to chan new paths and imagine different futures with respect to issues of gender and sexuality on our campuses," said Sheftall,

Summit attendee and Oglethorpe University staffer David Smith said he was inspired to participate in the day long event despite the fact that he does not work for an HBCU institution.

"This event gave us the vocabulary and a

guide to equip us to enter into conversations of gender and sexuality in a meaningful way," said Smith, who works with returning adults. "I wanted to come out and see how academics are approaching these subjects that have a farreaching impact on all students regardless of race and gender."

That level of transformative work continues Spelman College's long-standing goal to produce courageous women leaders who dare to change the world, a value school founders Sophia Packard and Harriet Giles practiced in thelr own unconventional lives more than 130 years ago.

Anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church to protest in Savannah LGBT activists plan 'Rally Against Hate'

By Dyana Bagby dbagby@thegavoice.com

Savannah gay activists are gearing up for a rally when the "God Hates Fags" church rolls into town on May 22 to hold a protest at ssveral local churches with plans to return to Savannah on May 27 to protest high schools.

Act Out Savannah, an LGBT activist group, is already organizing a "Rally Against Hate" to be held May 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m, at the First Baptist Church, one of the churches WEC win be protesting.

"A peaceful protest against bigotry, prejudice and violenc-e will be held in direct response and defiance of the Westboro Baptist Church's continued mission to bring pain, suffering and humiliation to others in the guise of religion," states a press release from Act Out Savannah.

Another group, Savannah Unite, plans a candlelight vigil on Wednesday, May 27, to protest Westboro's visit to Savannah. The vigil will be at Forsyth Park at the Orchestra Stage from 6-9 p.m,

"We invite the Savannah community, its institutions, organizations, families, and friends to join us for this festival of love. Let's show 'NBC that their words of negativity can notaffeet our beautiful city and community through words and actions of love and tolerance," states the Facebook invitation for the vigil.

Another Facebook page also asks people to hold counter protests of 'NBC during its several stops in Savannah. "Spread the love not the hate - this must stop. We can't let where we Jive be associated with the hatred of the Westboro Baptist Church," the page states.

Phelps, also plans to protest other Savannah churches on May 22, including Savannah Christian Church, St. John the Baptist Church and St. John's Episcopal Church.

Westboro will hold its protest at Savannah Christian Church also from 10:30-11 a.m., according to its website. Westboro condemns sec, saying, "The Lord your God has sent you a strong del usion that you would believe the lies that your so-called preachers tell you. You lap up the fables of God loves everyone and it's ok to be gay because you have no standing to dispute them. They make you feel good and allow you to think that your sins are by far better than the next guy so no reason to put them away and obey"

Westboro plans to return to Savannah on Friday, May 27, to protest local high schools, including Beach High School, Jenkins High School and Windsor Forest High Sdl001.

"We will picket these fag-infested pervertrun Savannah, GAhigh schools," WEC states on its website, www.godhatesfags.com

Blake Shelton's Tw·ter stupid·ty

Star's recent tweets could make me regret coming out as a country music fan

Editorial by Chris Cash

Confession: I love country music. Perhaps it's the Cash gene in me or simply because I grew up in the Deep South with a mother who carried a torch for Hank Will_jarns (senior not junior- what a disappointment he is) until the cklY she died.

I think Vlnce Gill, Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood and Little Big Town are among the most talented beings on the planet. Note I did not include Taylor Swift in that group. As an amateur musician, I often find myself drawn as much to Willie Nelson songs as to those of TIle Beatles and The Eagles.

Coming out as a country music fan has had its challenges. I have been ridiculed by mends and family alike for my subversive leanings. It's just how I'm made, r explain, it's in my DNA and there's no denying it. They accept this without question about my sexual orientation, but they are not so forgiving when it comes to my passion for country music.

I am "too gay," they say, to be a country music fan. TIle lingering stereotype of a Confeder-

"Re-writing my fav Shania Twain song ••• Any man that tries Touching my behind He's gonna be a beaten, bleedin', heaving k.ind of guy. "

- Blake Shelton

ate flag-waving, gun- to ting, NASCAR-loving dude does not exactly describe me. No matter how much I argue that the stereotype is not entirely true, they cannot seem to get past it.

In the midst of my uphill battle for acceptance, aided by Garth Brooks, Kathy Mattea and Chely Wright among others, along come the seemingly anti-gay and violence-laden tweets of Blake Shel-

ton. Thanks, Blake, for confinning that the world of country music is intended only for those with pea-sized brains and very large, .. trucks. Thanks, too, for ruining "The Voice," my new favorite show. Your lukewarm apology is not enough for me and I will be puJling for Cee Lo Green.

I went to ChelyWright's website to see if she had any conunent on Shelton's tweet. Wright, who came out as a lesbian about a year ago, has been very active since as a spokesperson for GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) and opening Kansas City's first LGBT center, She had no comment on Blake, but she had POSted a letter in April bemoaning the lack of support from fellow country musicians:

'1 knew when r decided to come out that I would be challenged with opposition, particularly from the cross section of people in the world who knew me best - the country music industry and country music fans. While I have had some support from people from my industry, it's been largely through private communication - only a few people have had the inclination to publicly vocalize their support for me,"

Ironically, on May 7, Wright tweeted the following about Shelton's apology:

"Hey, if we all agree that words we use as poblic figures matter - then let's not question @ blakeshelton's sincerity. He stated his position."

Who knows why she made this statement, but I doubt that one of the few private supportive communications Wright received was from Shelton. He has a history of making stupid comments when it comes to the gays,

When Wright came out he said he didn't care because "she is hot" and immediately proclaimed himself a lesbian. At the CMA Awards last month he made a stupid Broksback Mountain joke directed at Jake GyUenhaal.

Taken together all of these comments can easily be interpreted as those of a big redneck homophobe. The redneck part is true, but based on other information about Shelton, and using his numerous tweets as further evidence, I think his biggest problem is sheer stupidity fueled by alcohol. Hardly a tweet goes by that is not full of ridiculous references to booze.

lf Shelton isn't careful we may soon hear of Mel Gibson-like rants from this mild-mannered country boy. His defenders claim he is a harmless, really nice guy with a wicked sense of humor. Even some of Blake's gay fans have come to his defense.

Personally, I find his humor tasteless, sophomoric and banal. Maybe r am "too gay" to be a country music fan.

Sex.

We all Like it. We ali do it. But do we aU celebrate it?

"Getting' It On" is the theme for this year's Mondo Homo festival over Memorial Day weekend and, yes, organizers want to celebrate queer sex.

"Our sexuality is important to queerness," says Kiki Carr, a founder of the fest ce lebr ating its fifth year.

''We want to encourage people to get it on. It's a theme that works on multiple levels, for us to be more active in our community but also rerrundmg people that sex is important to us - mat it's spiritually nurturing as well," she says.

Jess Morgan, who is helping organize the festival this year, also says we need to honor sex as part of our identity as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people.

''We're celebrating queer radical sex. We

want to show people we're not afraid to talk about it," he says.

There won't be public demonstrations of sex. But there will be plenty of sexy music acts, workshops and people taking part in the slate of activities planned over four days in Castleberry, East Atlanta and Cabbagetown.

True to its mission, Mondo Homo also rakes a political bent - and there is plenty that political in the sexual, Carr says. But this year the Georgia state legislature, mostly Republicans, made illegal immigration an issue and passed HB 87, a bill similar to Arizona's stringent law.

At press time May 10, Gov. Nathan Deal had not signed the bill into law but has publicly stated he will. Among adler dungs, the law would allow local law enforcement to stop people and ask for proof of citizenship.

Southerners on New Ground, an LGBT nonprofit serving members in the rural South, worked to stop the biJI's passage this year and will be represented at Mondo Homo, Morgan says.

o

"SONG 'Will be creating banners asking the governor to veto HB 87," he says. "\ve also want to start political conversations."

Celebrating in queer spaces

Mondo Homo is most known for its mesic and art show as well as its "Homo Can" - a day of workshops ranging from how to make your own sex toys to an anti-racism workshop to designing your own t-shins with silk screening.

Specific details for the festival were still being hammered out this week, but there will also be a film event with tile theme "Change," curated by Andy Ditzler of d1€ Film Love series. The film night will be made up of film shorts, Including one that shows a transgender artist allowing the public to tweeze hair off her entire body.

Last year, Mondo Homo was held at Eyedrum. However, Eyedrum is in the midst of moving and finding a place in Reynoldstown, so Mondo Homo organizers are holding the art show and spoken word

opening night at the Sous Whiskey Marin gallery in Castleberry, the music acts and a burlesque show at Mary's and My Sisters' Room in East Atlanta, and on Sunday, May 29, park day in Cabbagetown Park.

" Acquiring the new spaces has put a nice spin on the event," says Morgan. ''We're using queer spaces and queer bars .. "

Bands on tap to play Mondo Homo this year include Kaley Red of New Orleans, a rransgender sissy bounce artist, as well as 8 Inch Betsy from Chicago and the Lost Bois of Washingroll, D.C.

Renowned drag king act the CUIlIly Kings will also perform and burlesque artist Vagina Jenkins, formerly of Atlanta and now residing in Ohio, returns to the AlL to organize and perform in the fest's cabaret party.

''We've got everything from burlesque to spoken word ~ everything will be more fagalicious this year," says Morgan.

This year's art show includes works from

queer artists from across the country, says Donnie Reider, who is cwating the event.

"This year we went to an open call for artists and we've got people from New York, WISConsin as well as from Atlanta. We have a quality collection of queer artists represented from installation, sculpture, painting, photography," he says.

Seeking less segregation

One tiling Carr and Morgan say they hope to see at this year's festival- new faces.

''Mondo Homo does an incredible job of being inclusive.

Our purpose is to create a fun, radical safe space," Morgan says. "We welcome anyone."

Morgan became involved with Mondo Homo several years ago after not fitting in to the "typical" gay events in Atlanta.

"1 think Atlanta is really hungry for something different and Mondo Homo represents that," he says.

Carr adds that "sometimes the queer and gay communities are separated by gender, class, age." Mondo Homo seeks to erase those lines.

"People who think Mondo Homo is not for them should definitely check us out and make up their own minds," she says. "We want to bring all people together,"

"Mondo Homo has proven to the country that the South can put on a kick ass radical queer fest - and you can't find many places in the world that can do that," Carr adds.

Plan you gay

emorial Day

Plenty of options for staying in town for the hoIiday

Pensacola Beach remains a top gay destination for Memorial Day weekend, including a full slate of women's events put on by the Atlanta lesbian bar My Sister's Room.

For those not headed out of town for the holiday weekend, the ATL has plenty of LGBTfriendly options to welcome in the summer. MondoHomo is a biggie (see story, Page 13), but other events promise to keep the city active as well.

The idea that Atlanta is a ghost town over Memoria] Day Weekend is false, according to local promoter Chris Coleman.

"I think Atlanta is a great place to be during the weekend," Coleman says. "It's a huge weekend, one of the biggest of the year. There is a ton of stuff going on - dance events, lounge events, outdoor events. I think Atlanta is underrated as a destination that weekend."

Coleman's Chris Coleman Enterprises has a slew of events beginning Thursday, May 26, and going through the weekend. The Boy Next Door fashion show will kick off the activities as part of the popular "Indulge Thursdays" at Whiskey Park at the W Midtown. Approximately 10 models will be present showing off swimwear/summer wear, according to David Boswell of Boy Next Door.

The "Drench" pool party will take place at the W Downtown on Saturday, May 28, before Coleman closes the weekend events May 29 with Sabbath Sundays at Opera during the day and then the new Club Q dance party at Quad, which he says is the only all-night dance event in town over the holiday weekend. OJ Dan De Leon from Los Angeles is the event's special guest.

A highlight of the event is a unique design competition, says Darrell Burke, event chair for Atlanta Cotillion X. More than 20 designers were given wooden eggs and asked to make designs from them. Judges will pick a grand winner that night Some of this year's debutantes for the upcoming Cotillion Bail will attend the event.

While the gay-themed play "Mr. Universe" officially begins previews earlier in the week at 7 Stages, its official opening night party is also Saturday, May 28. Live entertainment as well as a New Orleans style celebration is promised.

Local bars will be busy as well with weekend happenings. Many were still planning their Memorial Day itineraries at press time, but a long weekend always means special events.

One big event sure to draw crowds is Beach Blast on Saturday, May 2B, at the Heretic. The bar promises to transform i15 new patio into a beach for aT-Dance that kicks off at 3 p.rn. with OJ Mike Pope, a dunking booth, swim suit con" test, cookout and more. OJ Alex Cohen spins at 9 p. m. The event bensf ts Joining Hearts, which supports housing for people with HIY.

To make sure gay Atlantans don't forget the meaning behind the holiday, the Georgia chapter

of American Veterans for Equal Rights, which advocates for LGBT people in the military, holds a flag ceremony on Monday, May 30, at the flagpole in front of Piedmont Park, by Willie's Cantina.

Famous names

Big name guests will also be in town over the weekend. Broadway legend Patti Lupone performs at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra May 27 - 28. The star of "Gypsy" and "Evita" will perform her revue "Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda," which should attract gay men in droves.

Comedian Bill Maher, seen for the last seven years on HBO's''Real TIme," performs at the Cobb Energy Centre on May 26. Maher has never been afraid of saying what he thinks so it will be interesting to hear him. live. Although he is not gay, he has been long supportive of LGBT issues.

Zoo Atlanta's Brew at the Zoo, set for May 28, will have wine and beer, live music from the Superions band and openly gay Fred Schneider of the B-52s acting as guest deejay.

Festivals and more

Other major events highlight the weekend and will surely draw LGBT attendees. The 23rd annual Decann Arts Festival, a favorite tradl tion in the suburb known for its large population of lesbian and gay residents, gets underway with anArtWalk on Friday evening, May 27. The festival continues on the Decatur Square Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m, to 6 p.m,

Evenrs include an artist market, food vendors, literary festival, comedy and musical performances. Doria Roberts, an Atlanta singer-songwriter who is gay, performs Sunday at 1 p.m.

'Mr.

iverse' ret rns

Half~naked body builder :becomes catalyst for change in gay playwright's classic

A half-naked male body builder found on the streets may seem too good to be true for some, but the character changes the lives of a number of people in Jim Grimsley's "MI. Universe," being produced by 7 Stages.

According to playwright Grimsley, who is gay, it's the third time his play has been staged in Atlanta ~first in 1987 and then in the mid '90s, both times at 7 Stages. "Mr. Universe" is directed by 7 Stages' Del Hamilton, who played the character of Vick in the original production, and it stars openly gay actors Don Finney and Doyle Reynolds.

In the French Quarter of New Orleans, circa the late '70s, two drag queens ~Judy (Finney) and Vick (Reynolds) ~ find an almost naked young man (Brian Kirchner), who is mute and homeless, and take him in. The city is in the midst of a murder mystery, and the identity of Mr. Universe remains vague.

Finney was in the original production and

balked at first when thinking of reprising his role as Judy. He originally thought he was too old to do it again but realized the script had no age restriction. Finney says there are some subtle tweaks to the character this time, and he is happy to once again share a stage with Reynolds, one of his close friends.

Reynolds calls Judy the evil one of the two lead characters.

"Vick is responsible and nurturing and Judy is one step from being on the streets," he says. '1 wouJd say th.ey have a troublesome relationship."

As for Mr. Universe himself, Reynolds says his identity is open to interpretation.

Hanillton agrees that Mr. Universe is someone different to everyone.

"Mr. Universe is the perfect man, and who he is depends on who is viewing," says Hamilton. "Our Judy may see something awful and he acts abusively. Our Vick may see something more needy, and this fulfills him.

"But it's kind of like a blank slate: One sees what one needs to see when viewing the image of Mr Universe," he says. "In that way, he services everyone's needs."

New Orleans, too, becomes a central character in the play, says the director.

'Mr. Universe' features (leff to rig/If) Don Finney as Judy, Bria.1I Kirchner as !he !.i!le cboroaer, and LWyle Reynolds as Vick. The play by At/arlm writer Jim Grimsley returns to 7Swges.

(Photo byS. Nicole Boroski)

"Though written before Katrina, the social and cultural fabric of this city is also one of the characters of me play," Hamilton says. "The river flows by no matter what happens The holes in the fabric of the culture are in view in our production, it is 10m and in dis tress, and the people reveal this."

Hamilton and Grimsley are longtime friends and colleagues and 7 Stages has been proactive about producing the playwright's work, which Hamilton greatly admires.

"1 think Jim is on to something Important about who and what we are," he says. "His writing, although deeply Southern in its roots, is really about our nation and its citizens. It's not Like looking at a mirror image of who and what we

Puppets and people on 'Avenue Q'

Horizon Theatre is opening the musical "Avenue Q." It's the Tony Award winning sensation by Jeff Whitty that has become an Atlanta. favorite. It was staged last year at the Cobb Energy Centre, but this is the first time it's been produced locally.

Besides catchy musical numbers, as well as human and puppet characters, "Avenue Q" has a message of acceptance and a gay main characterRob, who's in love with his roommate Nicky.

Heidi Cline McKerley directs and the cast inc! udes gay faye Jill Hames ("G rey Gardens") who plays scene stealer/seductress Lucy tile Slut, who drives a wedge between leads Princeton and Kate Monster.

Youth Pride screens classics for a cause

INight on the Boulevard' benefits LGBT youth organization

By Ryan Watkins rwatkins@thegavoice.com

Atlanta LGBT youth organizadon YouthPride hosts its annual Night on the Boulevard fundraiser May 20 to benefit its HIV Prevention Department.

Attendees are asked to wear their best rughtwear, pajamas or loungewear to the benefit held at Ansley Park Playhouse. There will be a red carpet from 7-7:30 p.m. open to all guests with photographers posing as paparazzi. Tickets to tile fundraiser start at $100 and include admission as well as food and beverages.

Event co-orgamzer and YouthPride Executive DirectorTe:rence McPhaul said tile event began around 10 years ago as a gathering of friends to watch old movies.

"Before it was a private affair," McPhaul said. "It really Slatted as a slumber patty."

Now, "it's basically a film festival," he said.

"The community loves old movies."

No one under 25 will be admitted, according to McPhaul. A special event will be held for the organization's younger supporters beforehand, including a reception and a chance to interact with the fundralser's celebrity guests, but once tile fundraiser starts, younger attendees will be asked to leave.

Last year's fundraiser was a success, raking in some $7,500 dollars toward the organization's HN Prevention Department

"We'd like to do at least mat this year,"

2 be lroom cottage for rent ncar East Lake & Decatur. Large fenced yard, IOlS of storage, plenty of natural light.

McPhaul said of the current fundraislng goal.

This year, Night on tile Boulevard will trim from three movies to two. "Sunset Boulevard" and "Mildred Pierce" will be shown.

Attending the festival will be a handful of celebrities who McPhaul said will be immediately recognizable.

AVER Georgia works for LGBT military veterans

Although "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" has been officially repealed with President Barack Obama's signature, when the repeal will actually be implemented is still not determined,

For more than 20 years, American Veterans for Equal Rights has sought fairness for LGBT people in the military and to make sure LGBT veterans have access to benefits, says Danny Ingram of Decatur. Ingram is the former Georgia AVER chapter president and now serves as the national president for the nonprofit organization.

Each year the Georgia AVER chapter holds a Taps service at Piedmont Park on Memorial Day.

"The national organization started about 21 years ago in Washington, D.C., and the Georgia chapter was formed about eight years by Jeff Cleghorn, who is now a board member for the Servicemembers Legal Defense Fund," Ingram says.

The organization is a SOl(c)19, which means the "vast majority" of members must be veterans, Ingram explains. There are chapters in 16 states.

"We work to make sure LG ST vets get their benefits from the Veterans Administration and are also involved in ensuring equality for LGB service members with the lifting of the ban," Ingram says. ''Then we will work for the inclusion of transgender service members who are not included in the DADT repeal."

Ingram witnessed Obama's signing of the DADT repeal on Dec. 22, 2010, after being invited by the White House to the historic rnoment as president of AVER.

The Georgia chapter of AVER also is the honorary color guard for the annual Atlanta Pride parade and has marched in the past several years of the city's Veteran's Day Parade in November.

Organizers of the Atlanta Veteran's Day Parade have not allowed AVER to march with a rainbow flag because they considered it a "sym-

Lab Monkey Design strIves for 'fearless' approach

Jack Kinley founded Lab Monkey Design, a small graphic design and marketing firm, in 2007, and wants to ensure his clients know he is a fearless designer and businessman by just reading the company's name.

''The name Lab Monkey Design is an homage to my college class. We spent many an allnlghrer illegally locked into the school's computer design lab after hours and collectively referred to ourselves as 'lab monkeys," says Kinley, who is CEO and creative director,

"I wanted the type of fearless and exparimental design work that we created as design peers to be at the core of my company's mission. By putting tt rig_ht in the name, I think of that experience daily and am reminded to COI1- tinue experimenting and growing," he says ..

Through Lab Monkey Design, the artist takes his graphic design skills to work with clients to come up with a strategy that fits their organization in a way that is effective in reaching the public as well as ensuring his clients' subject remains front and center.

The best thing about his job as an openly gay business owner is the relationships built wi Ul clients, Ki nley says.

"I love coaching them through the thought process of creating strategies that culminate in effective design solutions," he says. "That direct re lati onshi p with each client was really missing in past jobs and J think it can be a hin drance for both the client and the designers working for them."

Kinley's company is a member of the Atlanta Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and he also does design work for the organization. He says he doesn't consider himself much of an LGBT activist and his company is the same. But he can make his opinions known through his studio art.

bol of protest," Ingram says.

"It will be interesting to see what they do this year because [with the repeal of DADT) it is no longer a symbol of protest," he notes, ''We do plan on carrying it this year"

Ingram, who was discharged from the Am1Y in 1994 about a year after DADT was signed into law by President Bill Clinton, said he and others volunteer for AVER because they believe there should be equality for all soldiers and people.

"The mission of the military is to defend the constitution. It is wrong to have policies in place that are clearly unconstitutional," Ingram says.

He is also passionate about branding - not the tattoo or body modification kind, though.

"As a graphic designer I was always smving to incorporate deeper insight and thought into my projects, The primary motivator in my work is the pursuit of purpose. Smart branding reveals the true value of a client's services or products and is, for me, a reward in itself," he says on his website.

BettyCouvertler: LGBT activism, Lady Gaga and fancy fedoras

By Dyana Bagby

Betty Couvertier, 63, has been pan of Arlanta's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activist scene since the mid-1990s when she moved here from Brooklyn.

Couvertier is the host of "Alternative Perspectives," an LGBT radio show that airs Tuesdays from 7-8 p.m. on tile community-owned and operated station WRFG 89.3 FM. She also organized the state's first International Day Against Homophobia last year. The second IDAHO event is slated for May 17 at Unity Fellowship Church.

What kind of jobs have you held in the past?

r was a New York City correction officer and retired early and have been able to explore many things, from bartending, to event organizing, line cook, managing restaurants, raising children and a DIYer (do it yourself).

Wby did you start' Alternative Perspectives,' which debuted in2006?

"Alternative Perspectives" started from a notion that our news was important news and that our voices together could get a message out to the public - to the folks that we work with, play with, shop with, live next to, go to school with

[The show is] about who we are, telling our stories: real people speaking up and taking a standWRFG gave me that opportunity to have a voice - independent media - where we can just tell it like it is.

Do you believe Lady Gaga is an LGBT activist? Do YOli like her music?

Yes and yes .. She has a soapbox and she is using it, which is good. And 1 love "Born this Way."

Tell us about IDAHO and why you decided to organize the event last year and this year,

IDAHO for me is an opportunity to be part of the world movement for equality. IDAHO is intemational- folks all around the world observing who we ane and breaking down walls. It is putting it up front that hate, bigotry, and fear cannot continue, that it win destroy us if we do not communicate, articulate, find that common ground that makes us one.

Plus [IDAHO] is an opportunity for the politics, the social, the networking, the people, religion, and the seerdi for the common good to come together in one package, one event that can spread and is spreading.

Belly Couveruer has been involved in Atlanta LGBTaccivism since the mid 19905.

Wi th the addition of the celebration of this year's theme "Same-Sex Couples ... A Story of Love" at the Church Wirhout Walls on May 15, we hope to continue the expansion in the years to come. And, yes, I'm planning on 2012 already.

If you could give ene piece of advice leaders in our LGBT movement, what would it be?

The necessary conversations after so many years of hush-hush are happening - we are having conversations about sex, about violence in our commuolty, about relationships, about race, about religion. And we ane having them not onl. y with our LGBT family but also with our allies and some who don't see themselves as our allies.

These conversations must continue and we must take them from the kitchen table to the pulpits and to the halls of our legislature.

Where do you get those fancy hats you wear?

I laughed out loud on that one. Here and there, mostly at thrtft shops.

DOMESTC DISTU

As luck would have i

Ten years after cancer diagnosis, a few thoughts on survival

When I was 21, I went to the doctor because there was a problem with my balls. Men do not go to the doctor; it's not ingrained in us. But a man will go to the doctor if there's an issue with his junk, because we're very protective of that area.

r came back with a diagnosis of Stage Three Lymphoma. That means it started in one location, and was on the move. Stage Four means it's everywhere. There is no Stage Five.

Science says we know more about cancer than we used to. We understand how cells metastasize, how to detect it earlier, how to fight it faster. "This sounds reassuring, but as a slasher movie geek, r know that giving the killer a more elaborate backstory doesn't change the motive. It kills because that's what it was designed to do. There's no logical plan of attack. People with Stage Four go on to have healthy lives. People who catch it at Stage One will be inexplicably resistant to treatment, and dead in 90 days. You can't predict iL

r went in for chemo a few days a week. I'd see a lot of the same people, on similar treatment schedules. My buddy was Eileen, late 30s, married, two kids, already hairless but she'd draw on her eyebrows because people took really weird without them.

If she was feeling good that day, she would draw them on herself. On bad days, her husband would do it for her, which was so sweet, but she'd always look a little surprised, or quizzical. r offered to take on the bad day eyebrows, much to her relief. We tried different looks from my Kevyn Aucoin "Making Faces" book: Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn, Audrey. All the great eyebrows.

Eileen and I both loved "Starting Over," which was this awesome daytime reality show iha; was like 'The Real World" but with middle-aged women who'd made bad choices, Toni Braxton's sister Towanda was there. Turns out there are five Braxton sisters, who knew? They started out as a group, like tbe Pointer Sisters. But Toni was the one that got discovered, broke up the group, and Towanda Braxton was bitter. Great TV

There was this other guy, Richard.

If he got to me hospital before me or Eileen,

he would watch "Matlock" on TES. If we tried to change the channel, he'd holler, "Hey, hey, I was watching rhatt" So we'd miss out on Towanda Braxton and have to watch Andy Griffith be all folksy and solve crimes.

One day I came in and Eileen was parked directly in front of the TV with this huge grin. I asked, ''Where's Richard?" and she got all giddy and yelled, "He died!" And it was so great that he died when he did, because Towanda Braxton had decided (0 write her first Single, with nothing but moxie and a rhyming dictionary to guide her. TIp from Towanda: "bitterness" rhymes with "pretty dress."

People have told me I was spared for a reason.Irs a lovely sentiment, but doesn't it imply that people who didn't make it died for a. reason? Sure, Richard dying meant no more Andy Griffith, but that hardly seems like justification for ldlling the man.

Eileen had two kids. I was a young gay guy with no dependents. Only one of us survived. And Eileen's departure ended up taking much longer than. any humane person could justify. What reason could there possibly be for that?

I couldn't visit Eileen in her final months because we were both immunosuppressed; our reunion would have been as toxic as a Braxton family reunion. She was in me ground before I ever knew she was gone. I could never find the words to ask what eyebrows they gave her. I know she had strong opinions on the subject.

We all have our talents, our passions. The skills you cultivate help you take advantage of the opportunities in front of you. But those moments, when Babyface tells you to leave your sister act and record "Unbreak My Heart," or when you conquer an enemy fighdng you from inside your body - that isn't design, it isn't aptitude. You are

merely fortunate. .

And it gives you a sense of urgency, to do something worthwhile with the time that you have, because you know that you don't deserve it more than anyone else. You're lucky. Thank God. You're lucky.
