Bruder Klaus Field Chapel / Peter Zumthor (Germany,2007)

FUNTION: The chapel was constructed by local farmers who

wanted to honor their patron saint, Bruder Klaus of the 15th
century.
MATERIAL AND TECHNOLOGY: Building was started with the
wigwam tent construction method and it was made of 112 foot
trunks. After the frame of the building was completed, 24 floors of
thick (50cm) concrete were poured and the chapel was set on fire
after the poured concrete had hardened.
Phenomenology aims to provide experience to the person through the use of elements such as
material, light and shadow, and the person discovers the structure based on their own background
and gains new experiences.

1. LIGHT: The only opening and light source at the top of the chapel evokes an emotional impact while
worshiping.

2. MATERIAL: Wood placed and burned on concrete for the wall from the interior of the chapel creates a
texture and gives a feel to the users.

3. SMELLING: The chapel activates the senses of the users with factors such as the smell of the burnt
tree used and the plants on the land where it was built.
