SCENARIO: One of your students unfortunately fails your vocabulary and
spelling quizzes. How are you going to help the student to get back on track?
As a teacher I should encourage him/her to master sight words. Make
sure that he/she understands the different sounds that letter combinations make. I will let him practice at home. I will allot some time for this student so that I can give his/her review and attention, maybe after class. And I will tell her parents too that they should give some efforts and support for their child. There are also some activity or techniques that I can use to enhance the students’ ability in vocabulary and spelling. Like encourage mastery of the sight words, make sure that the student understands the different sounds that letter combinations make. Help to recognize word families, help to memorize common spelling rules and practicing the student well. I can also give him some take home exercises or activity.
If there is still no progress. The other thing that I can do is to start
observing this student if there will be some strange signs maybe there are other factors that affecting the students’ learning. Children with dyslexia (language- based learning difference), ADHD (difficulty with focusing and attention), dysgraphia, and dyspraxia (difficulty with fine motor skills) can find spelling more difficult. If the student obviously or confirmed having one of this, I prefer to give the student the proper placement or accommodation that can meet thew student special learning needs.
