Procedures for Preparation of Combined Calcium, Sodium, Potassium & Chloride Standard Solutions
Materials

Calcium Chloride Anhydrous - CAS # 10043-52-4 (Analytical/Reagent Grade or better, new sealed dry bottle preferred)
Sodium Chloride (Analytical/Reagent Grade or better, brand new sealed dry bottle preferred)
Potassium Chloride (Analytical/Reagent Grade or better, brand new sealed dry bottle preferred)
0.1 Normal Nitric Acid - (Commercial Grade OK)
1 Liter Volumetric Flask (one each)
5 Liter Volumetric Flask (one each)
1 liter plastic bottles (five each)
1 mL volumetric pippete
10 mL volumetric pippete
50 mL volumetric pippete
1 liter opaque plastic bottles with air-tight sealing cap (five each)
DI Water (15 MegaOhms or higher resistivity grade)

- ENSURE THAT ALL GLASSWARE IS CLEAN AND DRY BEFORE PROCEEDING.

- THOROUGHLY CLEAN EACH VOLUMETRIC FLASKS AFTER PREPARING ANY SOLUTION WITH DI WATER.
- SOLUTION PREPARED FROM THIS PROCEDURE WILL STAY GOOD FOR 1 YEAR FROM DATE OF MANUFACTURE IF
STORED IN AN SEALED, OPAQUE PLASTIC BOTTLE IN COOL DRY LOCATION
Stock Solution Preparation Procedures:
Preparation of 0.0010 Molar Nitric Acid stock solution (DO THIS FIRST!):
1. Measure out 50 mL of 0.1 Normal Nitric Acid.
2. Transfer this 50 mL Nitric Acid into a 5 liter volumetric flask.
3. Dilute with DI water to 5 liter mark. Mix solution well.
4. Seal 5 liter volumetric flask with glass stopper.
Preparation of 10,000 ppm Calcium stock solution:
1. Measure out 27.692 grams of Calcium chloride salt.
2. Place this calcium chloride into 1 liter volumetric flask.
3. Dilute with DI water to the 1 liter mark. Mix solution well until it is completely homogeneous.
4. Transfer this 10,000 ppm calcium stock solution to a 1 liter plastic bottle and label appropriately.
Preparation of 10,000 ppm Sodium stock solution:
5. Measure out 25.421 grams of sodium chloride salt.
6. Place this sodium chloride into 1 liter volumetric flask.
7. Dilute with DI water to the 1 liter mark. Mix solution well until it is completely homogeneous.
8. Transfer this 10,000 ppm sodium stock solution to a 1 liter plastic bottle and label appropriately.
Preparation of 10,000 ppm Potassium stock solution:
9. Measure out 19.067 grams of potassium chloride salt.
10. Place this potassium chloride into 1 liter volumetric flask.
11. Dilute with DI water to the 1 liter mark. Mix solution well until it is completely homogeneous.
Transfer this 10,000 ppm potassium stock solution to a 1 liter plastic bottle and label appropriately.

Calcium, Sodium, Potassium & Chloride Combined Calibration Solution Preparation Procedures:
Preparation of 20 ppm Calcium, 100 ppm Sodium, 100 ppm Potassium & 220 ppm Chloride Standard Ion Solution
1. Draw 2.0 mL of 10,000 ppm Calcium stock solution and transfer to a 1 liter volumetric flask.
2. Draw 10.0 mL of 10,000 ppm Sodium stock solution and transfer to a 1 liter volumetric flask.
3. Draw 10.0 mL of 10,000 ppm Potassium stock solution and transfer to a 1 liter volumetric flask.
4. Dilute with 0.0010 Molar Nitric Acid stock solution to the 1 liter mark. Mix solution well until it is completely homogeneous.
5. Transfer this 20 ppm Calcium & 100 ppm Sodium calibration solution to 1 liter plastic bottle & label appropriately.

Preparation of 200 ppm Calcium, 1000 ppm Sodium, 1000 ppm Potassium & 2200 ppm Chloride Standard Ion Solution
6. Draw 20.0 mL of 10,000 ppm Calcium stock solution and transfer to a 1 liter volumetric flask.
7. Draw 100.0 mL of 10,000 ppm Sodium stock solution and transfer to a 1 liter volumetric flask.
8. Draw 100.0 mL of 10,000 ppm Potassium stock solution and transfer to a 1 liter volumetric flask.
9. Dilute with 0.0010 Molar Nitric Acid stock solution to the 1 liter mark. Mix solution well until it is completely homogeneous.
10. Transfer this 200 ppm Calcium & 1000 ppm Sodium calibration solution to 1 liter plastic bottle & label appropriately.
