Academic Performance in Adolescent Students: The Role of Parenting Styles

and Socio-Demographic Factors – A Cross Sectional Study from Peshawar,

Pakistan

This article is about how parenting styles affect the academic achievements of

adolescents even though there are many factors but the authors of this article focused on

parenting styles and they took their samples from 4 public and 4 private schools. The influence

of parenting styles on adolescents academic achievements have been observed since a long time

and the authoritative parenting style influence the most. Parenting styles have also been linked to

academic performance indirectly through regulation of emotion, self-expression. Authoritative

parents have so much control over their children that their emotional regulation are disturbed.

This article studies both parents separately with the factor of “care” and “overprotection”. The

school students were interviewed and were assessed determinants of academic grades including

the influence of parenting styles.

The data was collected through one to one interaction between the student and the data

collector but in my opinion it is inappropriate to ask children such questions regarding their

parents the children can show biasness for sure and they can get uneasy especially those

adolescents who have authoritative parents. On the other hand the researcher also gathered data

from parents too using a parental bonding instrument where the parents were asked to fill a

questionnaire but again it is not appropriate to ask parents about the factors of care and

overprotectiveness that who cares the most mother or father. Secondly, parents who are strict
would definitely refuse to fill the questionnaire and even if they do fill it the biasness factor will

be very high.

The academic performance of students was judged as the overall grade (a combination of

all subjects including English, Mathematics and Science) in the latest internal examinations sat

by the student as A+, A, B, C, or D. Judging the students on the basis of their grades would be

unfair because there would be two kinds of students who can work well under pressure and some

cannot so the adolescents who have authoritative parents and they force their children to study a

subject which they don’t want to some score high and some cannot score high so judging them

on this base would be inappropriate.

The results showed that the most common parenting style in Pakistan is affectionless

control and such style if showed by father results in good results of students and overall the mean

of care factor was higher in mothers and the overprotection factor was high in fathers.
