INTRODUCTION

➢ The topic of the chosen article is “Malaysian businessman starts contactless food bank

to help the poor” published by Ming Teoh in The Star on 12 July 2021.

➢ The article review will begin with a summary of the article and followed by an

analysis of the contents of the news article.

➢ Besides that, the review will also conclude with an evaluation of the news article’s

strengths and weaknesses.

SUMMARY

➢ A 41-year-old businessman named Ivan Chan felt sympathised with a friend of his

who asked him for help due to money scarcity to buy milk for his newborn baby.

➢ As Chan’s friend works in a niche industry, he became jobless because of the closing

of factories since the early MCO period due to COVID-19.

➢ His friend gained no income over a year and therefore, could not afford to earn a good

living for his family.

➢ Realising his friend’s trials and tribulations, Chan initiated a food bank called

“kEATchen Food Bank” at his business branches, which is located at Ara Damansara,

Petaling Jaya.

➢ To be more fair and systematic, he also did not forget to keep an eye on each

recipient’s MySejahtera check-in history to ensure that nobody collects the food

multiple times, thus making the system breached.

➢ In order to make it viral, Chan posted on his personal social media account.

➢ In the beginning, around 300 people who were affected by MCO got into the queue

and Chan had no choice but to reassure them that the food provided was sufficient for

all.
2

➢ Then, his business partners were also involved in his initiative, which resulted it to

become a company project.

➢ The food bank's distinctiveness, according to Chan, is that it is "contactless."

Volunteers and recipients are divided by pigeonholes with two openings and never

have to deal directly with one another.

➢ Each food basket included the essentials which are enough to feed a family.

According to Chan, other foods such as quick noodles, canned food, milk, and oats

may be included as well. In addition to meals, face masks, baby diapers, and sanitary

pads were also distributed.

➢ While most food banks cater to B40s or Malaysians in particular, Chan says he does

not ignore anyone who is in need. According to him, the vast majority of the

beneficiaries were B40s, with the rest being M40s.

➢ The pigeonholes, which were made for his cloud kitchen, assisted the food bank, and

since merchants are closed during the MCO, he was putting the pigeonholes to good

use to serve the needy.

➢ In accordance with Chan's long term plans, he aimed to get the food bank registered

as a social enterprise as soon as movement restrictions are lifted.

➢ Subsequently, he hopes to assist those who come to the food bank in finding jobs.

ANALYSIS

➢ "Malaysian businessman starts contactless food bank to help the poor". The journal

article's title effectively attracts interest by obviously conveying the message of the

article, which triggers awareness to the readers about the unemployment rates due to

COVID-19 among B40 and M40 communities in Malaysia besides recommending

more businessmen and other people from T20 community to raise funds and
3

donations to help poorer people around them. Overall, the title does not represent the

terms that are vague, ambiguous, and also do not made up of emotional opinions.

➢ On top of that, the journalist of the article inserted a photo of the kEATchen Food

Bank Initiative ran by Chan and his teammates in order to make the readers come by

the bigger picture of the project.

➢ Then, the points conveyed in the news article are detailed and well-elaborated. The

journalist gained information of the project such as the venue, when did it started,

how the project worked, what kind of food provided by Chan and et cetera. Besides

that, the journalist also included Chan’s words about the project as a proof of him

being interviewed.

CONCLUSION

➢ This article is useful for further research about community service as well as to

inculcate awareness among our society that there are people who get affected severely

by the MCO, and it is a must for them to be helped.

➢ The introduction section had made it easy for the readers to recognise the contents of

the paper in brief.

➢ Additionally, the facts included in the news are complete and intricated as the

journalist had interviewed Chan, the one who ran the initiative along with his

teammates.

➢ Last but not least, it is also better to include the journalist’s point of view about the

issue or to encompass a few recommendations in the article.
