As the current RA in Park Region for the incoming SGI floor, I would love to
continue bringing positivity and a feeling of belonging every day to create a
Returning Resident lasting community between my floormates and the rest of the Park Region
Assistant community. I believe my skills and background as a specialty RA (SGI) and as an
Elementary Education major make me an admirable fit to continue this role or a
different role in the upcoming year.
Concordia College ResLife I have found success promoting inclusivity, self-love, and mental health
awareness on my floor through small talks, utilizing wellness checks, and
901 8th St S bringing my residents to the resources they needed. It is crucial to me to build
meaningful relationships with residents and provide them with genuine interest

in their successes and support when needed. All while also helping them create a
healthy relationship with themselves.
I would love to meet via zoom and share more about my experience in ResLife. If
you have any questions, you may contact me by email: csimon3@cord.edu or
phone, call: 320-761-4354
Sincerely,
Cari Simon

-Which community are you interested in being considered for and why?
I am interested in being a part of the Sexuality and Gender Inclusive Floors because I
personally have struggled with my sexuality throughout my life and am now comfortable with
myself enough to help those who might still be finding themselves. As a person who now
identifies as non-binary, I understand that growth affects more than just yourself and can be
confusing for others as well. Along with helping my potential floor, I want to build a strong
community where my residents can rely on one another. I also want to encourage my floor to
put their minds to anything and not consider their sexuality or gender a setback in achieving
anything, because it isn’t a setback.
- What would you do to help create a welcoming and inclusive environment for this
community?
Regardless of whether I get to reside on the SGI floor or not, if given the opportunity, I would
ask all my residents, via survey, their preferred names and pronouns. I want to make sure that
all my floormates feel comfortable.
- What is one unique challenge members of this floor/community may face, and how
would you support the community/floor through that challenge?
Being that this a Lutheran affiliated college, I know that there are people here, some of my
classmates even, who still see sexuality as a choice and people who still see gender as the
same thing as biological sex. I am in a unique position because I am a Catholic gay non-
binary individual and as those labels do not commonly exist together, I have learned ways of
accepting myself as my Creator made me; both queer and religious. I want to be a
representative for other people, so they realize they do not need to choose only one part of
their identity and that being themselves is about multiple aspects of one’s life. As a leader, I
would help anyone who is being maltreated by peers or guests, most likely helping them
connect with a more authoritative figure if I can’t fully help them. I am hoping that my
presence will help people of all communities connect with each other instead of only seeing
others as one label.
