SPACES AND EXCHANGES (reciprocity)

I am going to talk about the notion spaces and reciprocity. First of all i would like to give a
definition of space. It is a territory or a symbolic area (art, religion…), it can be public or private,
demarcated or no… The exchanges is the act of giving something and receiving something else in
return. They can be economical, cultural, social…
In order to illustrate the notion, i have chosen 3 documents: 2 audio recording « the Cabrera
family » and « Hollande and dutch royals present for unveiling of Rembrandt portraits » and 1 text

First we will study that today there are many exchanges which are tied at the immigration. Then
we will speak about the different exchanges and places tied at Art with the museums.

I. Today, there are many exchanges which are tied at the immigration

Firstly, This document shows 1 brothers and sisters who lost in a first time her father in Mexico
and in a second time her mother in the USA. The 3 children Cabrera and their mother, after the
father’s death immigrated to the USA.
This family moved to the USA to survive, to have a better life.
Moreover, the reporter draws our attention to the fact that Over the last 5years, 24 000
unaccompanied minors have been arrested. They mostly come from Mexico, but others come
from China, India and Romania. The reposter’s point a view is very important because he sounds
shocked to realize that unaccompanied minors may come from so far. These children have
crossed many countries, have endured hardships, have overcome obstacles, have risk their lives.
In many respects this extract proves that there are many spaces and exchanges tied at the
immigration. Particularly the illegal immigration.

II. Different exchanges and places tied at Art with the museums

Secondly, the audio recording « hollande and dutch royals present for unveiling of Rembrandt
portraits » underlines the notion of spaces and exchanges. The document indicates artefacts’
exchanges like paintings between the France and the Netherlands. The painting represent
Martaen Soolmans and his wife to be Oopjen Coppit. These paintings are aimed at being
exhibited in the louvre and the Rijksmuseum jointly own these portraits. The portraits will be sent
to the Rijksmuseum to be restored. France and the Netherlands jointly purchased the paintings.
The paintings are being shown in Paris, then will be restored in Amsterdam and they will rotate:
each country will exhibit them for 5 to 8 years. This document underlines also economic and
political exchanges.
Moreover, the text shows exchanges related with Art. Firstly in a museum which a symbolic place
with artefacts. it is a students’ group which go at the museum. It shows that young people an be
interested in art and can make museums evolve, develop differently by sharing their ideas. Shows
that the youngsters can ask relevant questions about art contrary to what adults believe. the
younth want exchange with persons which have more knowledges to learn more about art.

Conclusion:
To conclude, In the 3 documents, the exchanges are illustrated in different ways like the
immigration and the museums with artefacts. The immigration shows that the exchanges are
sometimes harmful because there are illegal… The Art is a good mean to exchange because it is a
topic where all the people have an opinion and also because different persons or countries can
meet. I think the places and exchanges are important because they allow to discover new thing on
the world which encircled us.
