with air is explosive.
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET
§ 3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
THIS GAS IS PRODUCED , STORED, TRANSPORTED AND DISTRIBUTED UNDER PRESSURE AS A LIQUID. UNDER
NORMAL CONDITIONS OF DISTRIBUTION, IT IS NEVER HANDLED DIRECTLY BECAUSE IT IS CONTINUOUSLY CONFINED N
I
CLOSED SYSTEMS UNTILITS FINAL DESTRUCTION BY COMBUSTION DURING USE.
FIRST PRECAUTIONS CONSIST IN ENSURINGIT IS CAREFULLY CONFINED.
HOWEVER, SOME MEASURES ARE GIVEN IN CASE OF ACCIDENTAL LEAKS.
- MAIN HAZARDS:
* Health effects :
- in gaseous phase (in large quantity) : may have a slight anaesthetic effect and/or an asphyxiating
effect as it reduces the oxygen content in the air.
- MAIN SYMPTOMS:. At high concentrations, may cause a narcotic effect on the central nervous
system (headache, dizziness, drowsiness) or a more severe (loss of
consciousnessby depletion ofthe oxygen contentof the atmosphere).
- INFORMATIONIN CASE OF :
* inhalation : . In case of exposure to heavy concentrations of vapour, transport the person
into fresh air and allow to rest. If the person has breathing problems, call a
doctor and apply mechanical ventilation immediately. Headaches, dizziness,
somnolence and fainting in case of asphyxiation.
* skin contact (with liquid phase) : . Treat affected areas as thermal burns.
Wash the affected areas immediately and copiously with water. Remove
immediately all affected clothing as well as rings and bracelets, if applicable.
Do not remove if these objects adhere to the skin.
Do not attempt to warm up theaffected parts directly (friction, warm bath...).
In case of major injury, take the person to a medical centre for treatment.
* eye contact : . Wash immediately and copiously with water for at least 10 minutes. Cover
the eye with a sterilized compress.Consult a specialist as quickly as
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET
possible.
- MAIN ACCURATESYMPTOMS:. Headache, dizziness, drowsiness and unconscious ness in cases of
asphyxiation.
- PROTECTION OF LIFEGUA
RDS:. In order to enter an area where gas has been accidentally released:
According to risks of exposure, an insulated breathing apparatus must be worn,
or a safety helmet with a face mask and neck protection, gloves and full body
cover protective clothing and boots (with trousers outside the boots) as
applicable.
They will be made of infusible and fireproof material.
NEVER PENETRATE IN A EXPLOSIVE MIXTURE AREA
-
- EXTINGUISHING MEDIA:
* suitable : . Powder.
. CO2, water spray.
- SPECIFI HAZARDS: . Incomplete combustion produces gases of varying toxicity such as carbon
Monoxide(CO). These are highly dangerous if inhaled.
Accidental intense heating (in case of fire for example) of a container filled with
this gas can lead to bursting and spreading fothe product whose vapours may
ignite causing deflagration or explosion.
- SPECIFIC FIRE FIGHTING METHODS:
* extinction : . It is dangerous to extinguish a burning flame if it is impossible to stop the leak
rapidly. Extinction of the flame should only be carried out by closing off the
valve,in situations where this is possible.
* protection of storage and containers : . At the outbreak of any fire, remove flammable materials and exposed gas
containers. COMPLETLEYCOOL DOWN fixed and/or semi -mobile tanks and
any containers that are on fire by means of water spray.
* fire on bottle : . Never lay down a bottle on fire, because the gas would then burn in liquid
phase.
- PROTECTIVE MEASURES FORFIREFIGHTERS: . Use water curtains to protect the personnel.Insulated individual breathing
apparatus must be worn in premises with reduced oxygen.
- PERSONAL PROTECTION: . If the product is leaking in two phases, avoid skin con
tact with the liquid
product. Do not stay in the gas cloud (mixture of air and butane), stay behind
the source.
In case of spill in a closed area, clear this area, Ventilate thoroughly and
let qualified personnel intervene.
- AFTER SPILLAGE/ LEAKAGE In case of a leak with no fire: stop the leak by closing the valve.
Do not allow to penetrate into sewers, rivers and ground water. In case of gas
flames. Cut off the electric power supply if this operation causes no sparks in
the area containing vapours from the product.
VENTILATE THE PREMISES EXTENSIVELY. Remove combustible material
and, if possible, all exposed LPG reservoirs. Ensure that there is no remaining
risk before resuming normal operations.
- HANDLING:
* Precautions : . Use only soapy water or suitable products to search for leaks.
NEVER USE A FLAME.
IN ANY CASE:
NEVER UNDERTAKE ANY OPERATION THAT MAY AFFECT THE SAFE
CONTAINMENT OF THE FIXED STORAGE TANKS OR CONTAINERS.
NEVER WELD A BUTANE CONTAINER.
- Safe handling advice:
Butane containers in use must be kept in vertical position, so as to avoid the
intrusion of the liquid phase in facilities designed for the gas phase.
Only connect devices designed for butane supply.
In the installations use only materials and equipment specifically designed for
butane. Do not use natural rubber, which dissolves on contact with butane.
Use only standardised pressure relief valves which are Butane/Propane
approved under national or EC standards or covered by a specific ministerial
agreement, appropriate for the control of pressure of the equipment used.
Only use flexible hoses, made of synthetic rubber of appropriate quality, to
connect devices for a length less than 2m.Do not use beyond expirydate.
In case of intermittent use close the tap of the container after use.
* Storage precautions :
-suitable : . Store in well-ventilated premises and away from any source of ignition or heat.
Do not expose containers holding butane to temperatures exceedi ng 50°C.
Store away from low areas where butane vapours could accumulate in case of
a leak.
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET
* Packaging material : . Only use bottlesand tanks that comply with regulations for pressure devices
andthat are designed for butane.
* skin protection :
autre que les mains : . Selon nécessité, écran facial, vêtements couvrants et chaussures de sécurité
antistatiques (manipulation de bouteilles).
- PH : . not applicable
- SPECIFIC TEMPERATURES
* boiling point : . about -5°C at 1013 mbar.
- COMMENTS ON EXPLOSIVI
TY: . Explosive mixtures m
ay form in contact with air.
In range from 1.8% to 8.8% vapour volumes in air.
- SOLUBILITY :
* in water : Slightly soluble.
- OTHER DATA:
* vaporization of LPG liquid : 1 litre of liquid placed under atmospheric pressure gives a volume of vapour
ofapproximately 230 litres.
- HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITI
ON PRODUCTS: . Not applicable
- DISPOSAL OF CONTAMINA
TED PACKAGING: . Bottles belong to distribution companies; their destruction or disposal are to be
carried out exclusively by these companies.
The disposal of fixed butane containers must be carried out only by competent
companies. For tanks belonging to the distributing companies, this operation is
carried out by the companies themselves or under their responsibility.
