Conceptof hands
Concept ofhands

Hours Hand
Smaller oneis called thehour hand or short hand

MinutesHand
Larger oneis called minute hand or longhand.
HoursHand
Angle traced by hour handin
12hrs = 360°
1hr = 30° = 60min
1min = 1/2°= 0.5°
Speed ofhour hand= 0.5 dpm(degree perminute)
Angle of thehour handfrom vertical at
No’clock = 30N
P min = 1/2P = 0.5 P
Howmanydegrees does anhourshand
in 2 Hours Between2,4
HoursHand

How manydegrees doesanhours handin3:18

3 o’clock = 30×3 = 90°
18min = 1/2 × 18=9°
Totalangle = 90+9 =99°
HoursHand
How manydegrees doesanhours handbetween
2:30 to6 ?
Timegap between2:30 - 6
3:30

3 hours = 30×3 = 90
30 min = 1/2× 30 = 15
Total = 90 +15
= 105
Minutes Hand
How manydegrees doesanmintueshandcoversin
2 hours = 2× 360 =720
5 hours = 5× 360 =1800
20 mins =20× 6 = 120
40 mins= 40×6 = 240
H 2:40 min= 720 + 240 =960
Relative speedof
hours hand&mintueshand
Per Minute
Minutehand= 6 dpm
Hour hand= 1/2dpm
Relative speed = 6-1/2 = 5 1/2
It meansevery minute, minutehandgoes
5 1/2 degree more thanhour hand.

Type1 : Finding Angle

In this typeofquestions we
are given time&wehave to
find angle between the hands.
How doyoufind theangle betweenneedlesin aclock?
Example : 2:20 ?
usingtrick method
Minutes hand:
1min= 6 degree so 20 min= 20× 6=120degrees
Hours hand:
()i 1min= 1/2 degree so 20 min= 10degrees
()i 1hour = 30 degree
2 hour = 2 x 30 degree = 60 degree
But wehave tofind degree subtendedby 2 Hours and
20 Minutes= 60 + 10= 70degrees

anglebetweenneedles= 120-70 = 50
Hourshand N o’clock = 30N
P min = 1/2P = 0.5 P
Minutes hand P min = 6 P
anglebetweenneedles
= 30N+1/2 P - 6P Here mode( "||")
we are using for + values
= 30N- 5 1/2P Because clock wise &
anticlockwise values
= 30N - 11/2P are +,-
Here,
θ= anglebetweenhands
H = hours
M= mintes
If theygive 2 values ( i.e Hours , Mintues Or angle, hours ) in the
question wecan easy tofind 3 rdvalue
How doyoufind theangle betweenneedlesin aclock?
Example : 2:20 ?

θ= |30×2-11/2 × 20|
θ= |60-11 × 10|
θ= |60-110|
θ= |-50| = 50
anglebetweenneedles= 50
How doyoufind theangle betweenneedlesin aclock?
Example : 9:20 ?

θ= |30×9-11/2 × 20|
θ= |270-11 × 10|
θ= |270-110|
θ= |160|= 160
anglebetweenneedles= 160
How doyoufind theangle betweenneedlesin aclock?
Example : 9:30 ?

θ= |30×9-11/2 × 30|
θ= |270-11 × 15|
θ= |270-165|
θ= |105|= 105
Angle betweenneedles= 105
How doyoufind theangle betweenneedlesin aclock?
Example: 3:15?

θ= |30×3-11/2 × 15|
θ= |90-165/2|
θ= |180-165/2|
θ= |15/2|= 7.5
anglebetweenneedles= 7.5

Type2 : FindingTime
In this typeofquestions they
are given angle andhours
& we havetofind time.
What timedoes theclock shows whenthehour handis
between3 and4 andtheangle betweenthetwohands of the
clock is 50° ?
θ= |30H-11/2 M|
50= |30×3-(11/2)M|
50= |90-(11/2)M|
50 = 90-11/2M 50 = - 90+11/2 M
50-90 =-11/2M 50+90 = 11/2M
-40 = - 11/2M 140 = 11/2M
M=40×2/11 M =140×2/11

What timedoes theclock shows whenthehour handis

clock is 50° ?
θ= |30H-11/2 M|
50= |30×6-(11/2)M|
50= |180-(11/2)M|
50 = 180-11/2M 50 = - 180+11/2M
50-180 = -11/2M 50+180 = 11/2M
-130 = - 11/2M 230 = 11/2M
M=130×2/11 M =230×2/11

What timedoes theclock shows whenthehour handis
between1and2 andtheangle betweenthetwohands of the
clock is 60° ?
θ= |30H-11/2 M|
60= |30×1-(11/2)M|
60= |30-(11/2)M|
60 = 30-11/2M 60 = - 30+11/2 M
60-30 =-11/2M 60+30 = 11/2M

Clock is running fast: It is also referred to as gaining time i.e. when a
normal clock covers 60 minutes, a faster clock will cover more than 60
minutes.
Clock is running slow: It is also referred to as losing time i.e. when a
normal clock covers 60 minutes, a slower clock will cover less than 60
minutes.
A clock which moves continuously fast, It lags 5 minute on Sunday 8 am, it is ahead 7
minute on Tuesday 8 am then when does the clock shows right time?

Sun day– 8 Am––– –5 times

Tuesday 8 Am – +7 times Time gap 48hr

formula: time = × Time Gap

Sunday 8 am + 20 hr = Monday 4 am
A clock fast 1 hour in each 24 hour. If clock shows
correct time on Sunday 9 am then what is the
correct time, when clock, shows 11:00 am Tuesday?
