SABBATH

KJV Mark 2:27-28 27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the
sabbath: 28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
Christ, during His earthly ministry, emphasized the binding claims of the Sabbath; in all His teaching He
showed reverence for the institution He Himself had given. In His days the Sabbath had become so
perverted that its observance reflected the character of selfish and arbitrary men rather than the character
of God. Christ set aside the false teaching by which those who claimed to know God had misrepresented
Him. {PK 183}
KJV Genesis 2:2-3 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on
the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified
it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
KJV Genesis 2:1 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
God saw that a Sabbath was essential for man, even in Paradise. He needed to lay aside his own interests
and pursuits for one day of the seven, that he might more fully contemplate the works of God and
meditate upon His power and goodness. He needed a Sabbath to remind him more vividly of God and to
awaken gratitude because all that he enjoyed and possessed came from the beneficent hand of the Creator.

KJV Colossians 1:16-17 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth,
visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were
created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
KJV Matthew 11:28-30 28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto
your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
He was never elated by applause, nor dejected by censure or disappointment. Amid the greatest
opposition and the most cruel treatment, He was still of good courage. But many who profess to be His
followers have an anxious, troubled heart, because they are afraid to trust themselves with God. They do
not make a complete surrender to Him; for they shrink from the consequences that such a surrender may
involve. Unless they do make this surrender, they cannot find peace. {DA 330.3}
KJV Exodus 20:8-11 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do
all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any
work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy
stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that
in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, an
KJV Exodus 16:30 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.
The fourth commandment is the only one of all the ten in which are found both the name and the title of
the Lawgiver. It is the only one that shows by whose authority the law is given. Thus it contains the seal
of God, affixed to His law as evidence of its authenticity and binding force. {PP 307}
I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad. KJV — Psalm 119:96
KJV 1 John 3:15 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath
eternal life abiding in him.
No other institution which was committed to the Jews tended so fully to distinguish them from
surrounding nations as did the Sabbath. God designed that its observance should designate them as His
worshipers. It was to be a token of their separation from idolatry, and their connection with the true God.
But in order to keep the Sabbath holy, men must themselves be holy. Through faith they must become
partakers of the righteousness of Christ. When the command was given to Israel, "Remember the Sab
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy," the Lord said also to them, "Ye shall be holy men unto Me."
Exodus 20:8; 22:31. Only thus could the Sabbath distinguish Israel as the worshipers of God. DA 283.3
KJV Exodus 20:11 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is,
and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
The Sabbath was not for Israel merely, but for the world. It had been made known to man in Eden, and,
like the other precepts of the Decalogue, it is of imperishable obligation. Of that law of which the fourth
commandment forms a part, Christ declares, "Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in
nowise pass from the law." DA 283.2
KJV Revelation 7:1-4 1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth,
holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any
tree. 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried
with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, 3 Saying, Hurt not

KJV Revelation 7:3-4 3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the
servants of our God in their foreheads. 4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there
were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.
KJV Ezekiel 20:12, 16, 20 12 Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them,
that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them. 16 Because they despised my judgments,
and walked not in my statutes, but polluted my sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols. 20 And
hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD
your God.
The Lord designed that by a faithful observance of the Sabbath command, Israel should continually be
reminded of their accountability to Him as their Creator and their Redeemer. While they should keep the
Sabbath in the proper spirit, idolatry could not exist; but should the claims of this precept of the
Decalogue be set aside as no longer binding, the Creator would be forgotten and men would worship
other gods.{PK 182}

What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
